67

The day has finally come for Nexus One owners on AT&T and T-Mobile to receive Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo). After weeks of seeing internal and test builds floating around the offices of the Googleplex (and every imaginable corner of the internet), Users are reporting that they’ve either been prompted to download firmware FRF85(B), or that they can go into the settings menu and pull it down themselves.

According to reports, you can download this update and apply it regardless of what firmware version you’re currently on (including the older linked versions) and regardless of which Nexus One you’re using. If you can’t seem to get your device to discover the update, the download link here should be of interest.

For those of you not convinced this is official? Well, go ahead and see what Google has to say about it.

[Thanks to all who sent this in!]

  1. Mhmmmmm, tasty!

  2. Yay! Still no update for me, but I’m just happy to see the announcement.

I feel like waiting to see how long it will take for Google to push it out to me. I have patience…

(If I don’t have it by tomorrow, my patience may expire, however…)

  3. Yup, installed it last night (though I had to unroot the phone and restore everything to stock for the update to apply)

Froyo REALLY screams!! It’s pretty impressive!
Linpack scores went from 7.xxx to 39-40! Whatever hesitations the phone had before, GONE! And flash works flawlessly.

Every HTC Incredible, Desire, Evo user out there should REALLY harrass HTC to get this as it is nothing short of great!

  4. I manually installed Froyo on my Nexus One and it works perfect… super fast

  5. Still none for me

  6. No update for me!! Guess is going to be a waiting game.

  7. I say thank God that thread on the Nexus One support forums was getting very funny and sad at the same time. Sad because of peoples stupidity. I tried to calm people down since I’ve been on there for 6 months but all the noobs just couldn’t take it when Google doesn’t give them a response every day. Anyways thanks to Froyo the Nexus One is still the king of Android phones until the Motorola Droid X gets it and gets a big speed boost but of course the Nexus 2 will come out to T-mobile and retake its crown for another 6 months :)

  8. i’ve been using Froyo for a month now, FRF50, RFR83 worked flawlessly … only grind is VPN doesn’t work tethering through T-mobile :( I TMO is blocking most of the ports :(

  9. No update yet, but I have seen reports of people from Vodafone in the UK getting the update to, so it’s not just localised to T-mobile and AT&T as the article suggests.

  10. Tried to update manually on unrooted N1:
    got this
    E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command

    — Install from sdcard…
    Finding update package…
    Opening update package..
    Verifying update package…
    E:failed to verify whole-file signature
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

  11. I’m still running ERE27 and haven’t recieved any updates :(

  12. @Kevin, same here. I am running FRF50 not rooted. get the same error on every update that has come after FRF50… and now this one as well, this fucking sucks…

  13. @Kevin @ned: I got the same thing then I noticed the file linked here says “FRF85B-from-EPE54B”. I was running FRF83. So I found a small patch linked from the XDA forums. Try finding one that’s appropriate for whatever build you are running.

  14. Anyone have a napkin!!! This was so much tastier than an apple¡¡¡¡

  15. I am running FRF83 before I accept official version can anyone tell me if T-Mobile or AT&T had them remove wifi tethering. Without a doubt my favorite new feature I would hate to get official version just to find out its gone.

  16. Just as a side note: Does anyone find hitting the System Update button very unsatisfying? You hit it and it IMMEDIATELY pops up telling you your system is up to date. No icon showing it’s thinking or connecting to google servers. Just an immediate no. I wish they’d throw in a little animation to at least give me the impression that it tried to find an update:)

  17. So.. how do I get from FRF83 to FRF85(B)?

  18. Any news on updates for those running ERE27?

  19. is this update coming for the Mytouch Slide

  20. Great finally. This is also great news for none N1 owners cause now that they have received there update us EVO owners should get ours pretty soon. Along with some of the other phones announced for the update.

  21. Could someone verify that the “standard” manual update instructions (those posted for previous, unofficial updates) SHOULD work for this update as well? And, maybe a link to those instructions.

  22. So if I have FRF50 build, these files will not work for me… will there ever be a FRF85B-from-FRF50 update?

  23. got mine this morning, i havent noticed any noticeable changes, however im going to give flash a try today, hopefully the browser is more stable this time

  24. I am looking forward to this build. I have a couple of questions for those who have upgraded:

    – Any experience upgrading from FRF50 to FRF85B on NexusOne TMobile non rooted?
    – I like the use of the portable hotspot, can anyone confirm that the FRF85B for TMobile has not disabled this?
    – After taking a photo with my NexusOne, it takes a long time for the photo to show in the Gallery and at times I had to exit and reenter the Gallery before it would appear (this appears worse in FRF50). Has anyone else had this issue, and has it been improved in FRF85B?

  25. @Paul,

Don’t worry about tethering. You bought this phone directly from Google, and the carriers have no say about what features are included. The same two Android images (one for the AWS version of the phone, another for the 850/1900/2100 version) are being deployed to all phones, regardless of carrier.

The only restrictions you might face from your carrier are those you agreed to in your service agreement.

  26. May be of interest to those on odd builds…

The Nexus One UK forum has this:

“Well, here’s the link to end all links folks:
    http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

That will put you on froyo (It’s also 80-ish MB)

    /Thread”

  27. @Aja YES! haha

  28. @ Sulli – the Gallery issue has improved big time!!

  29. stock N1 manually updated to FRF50 when it came out but didnt update on FRF72 – when I woke up this morning I got the OTA update for FRF85B (1.9MB), am in the Philippines… ty Google

  30. …..Sitting here by the window with my N1 plugged in, I shut off my WiFi to drive more 3G data usage, I keep disconnecting and reconnecting to the wireless network hoping a fresh handshake with the servers will trigger the update, but my N1 and I just keep staring at the sky waiting for the mother ship…phone home?

  31. Did much the same as Sulli above when the last update was supposed to be OTA’d. Does it really matter if you are using 3G or WiFi for the OTA to occur?

  32. Ok, looking for the file to go from FRF50 to FRF85B….

    Let’s try http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF83-from-FRF50.38d66b26.zip

That web address scores a hit on the google servers!!!

  33. I manually updated yesterday. Google has issued an official announcement that this is the final version and OTA update has started to nexus one devices only.

  34. How do I install it? Help

  35. I got FRF50, but when trying to update to the new FRF85b i get an error and installation aborts. Any hint on what i need to do ? Thanks

  36. No problem w the manual update.. Other then a Nob error!!! update.zip.zip (was to excited and did not look @ what i was doing) now works great and fast and downloaded flash 10.1 for it..!

Pissing everyone off @ the office muhhahahahah long live the Nexus one !!

  37. Thanks Lauren Berns,
Manual update (stock N1) from ERE27 to FRF85(B) worked great.

  38. Ok again, am I the only one that can’t play mp4 video files that worked fine on 2.1? If this is the final build this is some BS.

  39. ” Sulli wrote on June 29, 2010

Has anyone used the full ota file to update from FRF50?http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

Let me try that right now. What does OTA actually stand for?

  40. OTA – Over the air…

I am in the final reboot phases now following the steps outlined here:

    http://tipsneeded.com/update-nexus-one-to-frf85b/

  41. @Ken. Over The Air.

  42. Sweet success, all is well in the land of FRF85B. I will let you know if I see anything major different from FRF50.

One thing on the install, I always get confused at what the symbol of the android popping out of the box indicates. It is calling for another reboot at that point.

  43. the update does not work on european nexus one. google germany says on heise.de ( http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Google-gibt-Android-2-2-fuer-Nexus-One-frei-Update-1030654.html ) that currently only phone bought directly from google are updated and the vodafone nexus one will follow “soon”.

  44. Does anyone know how Google’s OTA process works for the Nexus One? When the last OTA occurred, I was one of the last to get the notice. Should I expect the same for this? Maybe Google should change the order to be fair.

  45. It worked! Thanks for the help , Aeires, and Sulli.

  46. Thanks @Sulli. I was able to successfully upgrade my T-Mobile N1 from the FRF50 to FRF85B.

    To summarize:
    Download the new build here:
    http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

    Then follow the instructions here:
    http://tipsneeded.com/update-nexus-one-to-frf85b/

    GL!

  47. OK, now that I am at FRF85B on N1, when I plug in my USB it does not give me the option to mount like before. has anyone else experienced this? How does the USB get mounted?

  48. update: I think it has to do with USB 2.0 ports vs non USB 2.0 ports. I had the USB in my docking station which was non USB 2.0. That seems to no longer be supported.

  49. Well my update came this morning and it Bricked my phone. It downloaded completely and started going through the update process. After 2 hours of seeing the colored X still sitting there I called T-MO. They didn’t even know it was going out to the N1. Got sent to Google, tried resetting the phone. Still locked up. On to HTC for a replacement, or they can charge me $29 to fix the phone…LMAO…Google’s update F’s up my phone and I need to pay to fix it. Just send me the new phone….I was born, but not born yesterday!

  50. does this mean this update is for all phones that is spose get 2.2 froyo and for the my touch 3g slide too as well or just for n1 user’s??

  51. For those trying to check for the update, what you can do is open your app management in settings, menu>filters set to all, then scroll to system update and clear data. this is the result of the most recent check and is assumed acurate for a while I assume. I’m still waiting for the update though, so I make no guarantee its will help.

  52. FUCK! I applied this update:
    http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

…on N1, not rooted, FRF50 build, and my phone won’t boot!!! It just boots to recovey mode (the android with the /!\ mark), it does not want to boot normaly. wtf?! How can I fix this????

  53. I was just wondering if I get the official manual update will it wipe my phone or will it just run the update? I have the AT&T Nexus One using build # EPE54B.

  54. For any European Nexus One owners wishing to install FRF85B on their handsets, I wrote a how-to

    http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/111675-european-nexus-one-how-install-2-2-frf85b.html

.. please keep in mind it will totally reinstall your phone and you will loose all data

  55. Thanks for your response, do you think that applies to the US version as well?

  56. Can’t get the update from FRF83 to FRF83B anymore…. anyone know where I can get it?

  57. Sorry, i meant FRF85B. Know where I can get it from?

  58. Well got my update up hear in canada and mine is saying frf91 and not frf85 I luv this rom so smooth and fast thank you so much google yum yum

  59. Wow the frf91 update I just got is way farr and smoother than frf83 love this rom
