[Update] Sprint: 2.2 Upgrade Being Finalized for the EVO, Headed Your Way in the “Near Future”

23

Going right along with what the rumors were saying regarding Sprint wanting to be the first (presumably non-Nexus) carrier to bring Android 2.2 to the masses, they’ve stated that they’re finalizing the software for the upgrade now and expects to launch it in the near future.

While they didn’t specifically say that the HTC EVO 4G fits inside this “near future” window, I can’t imagine they’ll leave that crowd out of the circle for long. Their wording also indicates that other devices may be getting the upgrade, as well, so Moment and Hero owners could be in for a nice surprise pretty soon.

Let’s not get anyone’s hopes up, though: we all remember what happened the last time Android upgrade rumors started swirling about.

[Update]: The original poster at Sprint’s forums chimed in to clarify that the Moment and Hero will not be getting this update. I guess that clears things up regarding the “in the near future” confusion. Chalk it up to bad wording on their part.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  4. If the Hero gets it, that means the Eris will get it too…mmmmm. I too would like some dessert, please!

  5. Specific enough?

“It also will be available as an upgrade on the recently launched HTC EVO 4G.”

No, it will not. 2.2 will not be available for HTC Hero or Samsung Moment

  7. @Lewis – Not necessarily. I can tell you with much certainty that the Eris will probably not get it except through root since Verizon has officially phased the Eris out.
They probably didn’t mention the EVO 4G because they know how much longer it takes to implement 2.2 into HTC Sense is what I’m guessing.

  8. Im just hoping for a release by end of summer I can be happy with that.

  9. Yeah, way to read the entire thread there Quentyn. Might be time to delete this bookmark with such worthless reporting.

  10. QUOTE – “Let’s not get anyone’s hopes up, though: we all remember what happened the last time Android upgrade rumors started swirling about”.

So then, why start/promote the rumor???

    Just sayin… lol

    :)

  11. Bummer. Well, my wife and I are both eligible for upgrades at year’s end.

  12. what will happen if a rushed verison of 2.2 OTA to your device? a bugged 2.2…..

  13. Do some people not read, comprehend?… The EVO is specifically mentioned as getting Froyo as an upgrade.

  14. Guys, I didn’t misread the original quote.

    .

“As work on finalizing the software is under way, Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in the near future. It also will be available as an upgrade on the recently launched HTC EVO 4G.”

    In my article, I state:
    .
“While they didn’t specifically say that the HTC EVO 4G fits inside this “near future” window, I can’t imagine they’ll leave that crowd out of the circle for long.”
    .
What I’m saying is that the “in the near future” part doesn’t directly address when the EVO would be updated. I’m not saying that it’s unsure on whether or not the EVO will get it, I’m questioning “when”. The rest of the confusion can be chalked up to bad wording by the original poster, as is echoed by users in the thread at the Sprint forums.
    .
@JJJJ I read the entire thread. What’s there to change about how I reported this story?
    .

  15. ooooooh, Get em Quentyn! Get em! I noticed that same slick wording. Most weren’t paying attention to how all they said was that the EVO’s update would be an OTA but they didn’t say when it would happen though. Can’t hustle me! haha

  16. Uh, reporting on the Hero and Moment being mentioned by the OP as not getting the update. Geez. Did you really read it?

  17. I think we should all just hope for the end of 2010, maybe by Q3 if were lucky.

But it shouldn’t take nearly as long to work sense into the aosp like as long as it took for 2.1. So don’t fret fellow Evo owners.

  18. it sucks that the moment isn’t getting the 2.2 update. i guess i can hold out for 6 months until i get my upgrade

  19. Is there any reason why the Incredible shouldn’t get it the same time or even before?

  20. What kinda bs is this ? I’ve had the hero for 8 months and your telling me that I will get no more updates . I think my foot my phone and the Sprint salesmans ass are gonna have to meet. I want my money back or the evo !

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!

  22. The question is how near is “Near Future”

  23. why wouldnt the moment get the upgrade. Its one of the best android phones out there (except for little things like the mute button and face dialing. This is a real con on us from sprint and samsung. You would have thought they already had the system to go along with the technology. Its all backwards. This is why apple is the best in the world. Well-thought out applications and hardware. The android system and phones are just cheap copies and wanna be iphones.
