HTC Desire To Receive Froyo Late June?

31

Another day, another version of Android. With new versions comes another round of waiting and speculation in regards to when most Android users will be seeing the latest that Google has to offer. The first rumor comes by way of an XDA member who contacted HTC with frustrations about not having enough space to install more applications onto their phone.

After drilling the customer service rep, he “had a chat” with his supervisor and told him to tell the customer there was nothing he could do. The next bit was a bit amusing, though:

But you never heard this from me…. A new update is coming the 23rd of June and you will be able to put some apps on to the micro sd card.

I find it hard to believe that HTC doesn’t have any technology to monitor chat logs of conversations between customers and reps – nor is it usual for a customer service rep at any company to venture off of the script – but this rep apparently had some information he just couldn’t resist spilling.

If he’s to be believed, then HTC Desire users will be able to have their Froyo (and eat it, too) near the close of June. As always, take it with more than a grain of salt and do not hold your breath for one second.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I wonder if it is JUST the Desire, or if it refers to additional HTC Android phones? This question is formed with breath held and salt grain taken…

  2. Yes, and the HTC rep leaks have never been wrong have they!

  3. Or more likely they will backport the Apps2SD code from Froyo

  4. If he couldn’t resist holding onto it, he wouldn’t have told anybody!

  5. Considering the inconsistent responses that have come from HTC in the past regarding release of kernel sources/updates to the Hero, I wouldn’t hold my breath…

  6. Bogus.
As everything else concerning dates coming from the HTC supportchannels.

  7. @DgDeBx good observation! ;)

  8. HTC tend to mix up handsets and softwares, so this is probably the Hero Eclair update.

  9. If this is true, the Incredible shouldn’t be far behind

  10. Either way I am sure the droid will have it before a SenseUI phone

  11. “But you never heard this from me…. A new update is coming the 23rd of June and you will be able to put some apps on to the micro sd card.”

Sounds like the issue we were having with the original Palm Pre before Palm moved applications to the larger 8gb storage area of the phone after a barrage of complaints regarding the application limit.

  12. Hope that is not an asparagas.. I know some big companies that using chat, twitter, facebook etc in their customer services, so hope this is one of them and really true (have not yet searched for HTC whether they have “chat” as communication tool among services being offered)

  13. I would never trust a customer service rep on something that revolves around the developers.

  14. Google wants to sell more apps, the producers want to sell more apps, we want to buy more apps. There are millions of Andriod phones out there, and some have reached their limit. This “buy more” storage update is likely to be available to many of the existing phones.

There is a business case for doing this, however the market might be a bit small.

  15. Well as all the updates for my HTC Hero have been so awesome, I’m really looking forward to this!!!1one

I’ll believe it when it’s released.

  16. hmmmmmm

I think that we will defiantly get it soon but i don’t believe anything reps say. We might even get it before then

  17. I sure hope that one of the changes with Sense 2.1 is that its been optimized for easier Android updates. That must have come into play after the disaster that is the Hero.

  18. Awesome stuff. I’ve only had my Desire for a couple of weeks, but the update is welcome!

  19. They didn’t specify which YEAR. I’d bet on 2015. Any takers?

  20. Well, the phone NEEDS to be able to use SD card as memory. Some of the build-in apps are incredibly wasteful. I have had about 15 SMS messages eat up over 800K. HOW IN HELL? Do they get stored as HD Video, or something? There really is a lot of crap there.

  21. I actually think there might be something to this, why? Because of Nexus One, remember Google screwed up that release a little, it never reached places like Europe!…. So we got the slightly better Desire, and I think HTC really want this to compete with Nexus one as much as possible, since they were bold enough to release it one month after Nexus one, so something tells me they don’t want to trail after it any more than that. But yeah we shall see maybe I’m being too hopeful because I happen to own a HTC desire, but I think it makes sense considering the Google Partnership and whatnot they have been enjoying lately.

  22. Personally if I was thinking of getting a HTC phone I would wait for an official announcement before buying a phone regarding which phones were going to get the 2.2 upgrade otherwise you might find it is out of date when you get your phone.
Generally HTC haven’t been very good at updating the OS.
I think Desire owners will be more fortunate at getting froyo than legend owners though!

  23. @Fredrik Hero Eclair has already been released… but I still wouldn’t hold my breathe for this to come true.

  24. Hm, got an important ota update from HTC about 2 days ago. Regarding the HTC apps on my HTC desire. Maybe of issues for an upcoming Upgrade of froyo? I will looking forward.:)

  26. iv just beenon phone with geek squad and its defo coming the upgrade and it will be automatically installed

  27. lets be fair, this customer services rep was probably given this information like all the other customer service reps within the company because they *expected* someone to leak it. as expected, someone did, so it got people talking, it was probably a publicity stunt. noone can resist releasing a dirty little secret and all big companies know this. for example, i could tell you that sky are meant to be doing gas and electrics sometime in the future (as in british sky broadcasting), however just because the company have told us this, doesnt mean it’s definitely going to happen. so far, being that it’s the 23rd, i’ve heard sweet F.A. about the update, i’ve tried searching for the update and got nothing. word of advice guys, dont believe a customer service representative, they’re useless!

  28. Got an update yesterday. – Not convinced that it updates the HTC OTA to Froyo with Sense though. My firmware version is 2.1 -update1.

Also cant find the Flash Beta on Market. It does now allow me to use the phone as a dongle though. Do I have Froyo???

  29. So, after all the hype, it turns out that the technical support agent was either paying very little attention in their product lifecycle briefings or was eavesdropping – poorly.

The firmware update that came out on the 23rd was nothing more than a few bug fixes (albiet needed) that did not contain the Froyo update.

Now the net is rumored to have another random technical support rep who claims the Froyo release will be out by the end of June. Really? It’s June 28th. No one pushes out firmware updates that quick.

Sorry, we aren’t getting Froyo anytime soon and it really angers me that HTC isn’t telling customers an exact date for deployment. How about something on the record HTC? I’m sick of riding the rumor roller coaster and would prefer to not have to wildly guess at when my phone will be updated.

  30. i myself have contacted HTC in a desperate attempt to get an answer on that, this was my reply….

Thank you for contacting us. In regards to your query, “We are considering a Froyo(2.2) upgrade for some models of our phones, but we are still analyzing the impact this will have on the user experience. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades.” (Official statment from HTC Taiwan) I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Kind regards, Federico F. HTC

once again HTC have astounded me with how helpful they are! not! another update will follow soon as i have emailed them back asking them if i can be involved in trial upgrades once the sense ui has been fully integrated

  31. 29.06.2010, and still no date….
Getting quite sick of this myself. Really can’t see why they can’t pinpoint a date/week/month for the update. If the Sense UI takes SO long time to implement from version 2.1 till 2.2, then I’m not sure if I’d like to wait each time a core update is released.
I do admint the update now is special, since everyone is running out of space on their phone, but if this is gonna be the “feedback” -as in none- for further releases, I’ll think I’ll go for a ported version instead.
I admit that Sense UI lookes good. But a core update is more welcome than a sense ui that you just read weather forcasts on.

If no update during mid next week Im giving up sence ui, and install froyo plain
