Thanks To Adobe, Gaming On Android Has Never Looked Better [Video]

23

Android isn’t known for its elaborate or pretty games. There are some great gems to be discovered out there, but the library of games that you can get right now doesn’t even come close to what Apple’s mobile platforms offer. All of that could be set to change, though, as we know AIR and Flash are making their way to the Android platform soon.

One developer – Josh from Bowler Hat Games – has been playing around with AIR and Flash for a while now, and has already conjured up a port of his recently released Chroma Circuit for the Motorola Droid. It may not look like much compared to what you can find on the market now, but his ability to port the game over with little effort spells nice things for the future of Android games (and apps in general).

If this is what “buggy and bloaty” looks like, then I will take a big spoonful of it. I can’t wait until we start seeing more of what could be in store for Android as more developers embrace AIR and Flash for mobile devices.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

    Amen~

  2. I believe he said “Bowlerhat Games”, not “Bullethack Games”.

  3. I believe you’re right! My mistake.

  4. I’m confused, is Adobe Air some Game SDK? or is it just Flash that allows Flash games to be played from your browser?

  5. What is the obsession with these flash games?!?!?!? Is this what we’re (as in Android community) talking about when we say we’re behind in gaming. If so the Android community is EXTREMELY short sighted. The Galaxy S is not pushing 90 million triangles per second to play 2D puzzle games. Apples game hub system or whatever it is was not built just for these games. The Xbox live integration with WinPhone7 isn’t built for these games. They are nice to have as finger puzzles but with phones starting to come close to pushing the processing power of consoles and hi def TV out capabilities….well you should get the picture. We could get all the Adobe Air and Flash games in the world and we’d be left in the dust. I surely hope Google is seeing the big picture here and its only the Flash devs that are excited about this stuff.

  6. @Phil Flash supports 3D texturing, modeling, and rendering. Not sure about the specifics of this mobile offering, but I doubt it wouldn’t be the same.

What is the hatred of Flash?!?!?!?

What developer – what person – says “please give me less”? “please give me fewer options”?

Clearly, you can publish whatever high end game or application you want using Java et al, but having the ability to port simple AND complex apps from web to desktop to mobile EASILY is nothing short of game changing (the real kind of game changing, not the iPad kind).

If you think Flash is about simple 2D games only, you are not paying attention.

  8. @Quentyn I don’t foresee many big 3D games being developed on Flash unless they’ve done a TON of performance work which I haven’t seen. Flash simply isn’t going to bring the level of games to Android that the other platforms have. Most devs are going to stick to native code. If they left that it would probably be for Silverlight or JavaFX if Oracle gets in gear. And Google has already demoed a native code game engine in the browser. Flash is nice for the puzzle games or even some light 3D games but it isn’t the way forward and not really much to get excited about.

  9. 3d games will probably come to Android through Unity 3d cross compiler.

  10. League of Legends is made in adobe air and its kind of 3d

  11. Gaming is not that important….

    *ducks for cover*

  12. I say yes to flash, so don’t hate. Now as far as 3D gaming goes I hope we get more of it…Oh yeah and HTC, Motorola, Samsung, give me call and I’ll help you design a gaming phone. With the proper placement of physical buttons to maximize the experience.

  13. I am so looking forward to having some sweet games on my Android device. Something that looks really really close to PS 2 quality games. I think with most Android from the Samsung Moment, Nexus One, Droid Incredible, HTC EVO, & processor aggressive Android’s, that PS2/N64 graphical quality games should be easy to pull off.

  14. As a developers, I would embrace Air immediately.
#1, I’m proficient in Adobe Flash and Flex
#2, Cross platform like flash. Flash games can be play from Mac to Linux. That’s what i love about flash games. so i assume by doing Air Mobile, I can publish to android and soon blackberry and Windows mobile 7 as well.

  15. puzzle games…… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

rather stare at a wall and think bout naked ladies

  16. “League of Legends is made in adobe air and its kind of 3d”

I’m pretty sure just the launcher UI is Air. The game itself isn’t.

  17. @8-Bit-Soldier Air is basically the desktop version of flash.

Flash gets embedded into your web browser.

Air can be run on your desktop without a browser. It’s basically a way to develop desktop applications using adobe’s flash/flex technology.

  18. Sites that delete comments suck.

  19. Carnts; games mightn’t be the important to you, but point i think, is that we are almost the point of carrying a WI in our pockets. Bar the user interface, the portable tech device (powerPhone) is going to be a very lucrative market. While Apple FanFags lulz over their 2D graphics and umm3D graphics. End end devices like those running A.droid will be THE platform to move games to. In 12months from now, DONT bet money that INTEL will be in the game, maybe even AMD and you’ll see some epic shizz avail… trust me.. i wear diapers..
