Zii EGG: Sweet Android with Unfortunate Name

The main downfall of this phone could be the name – it sounds like something a French guy would say on Easter Sunday. But joking aside, Zii EGG is a pretty big story that shows how Android is and will allow smaller innovative companies (Zii Labs) to breakthrough the barriers to entry in the mobile market and provide consumers with compelling options. The company behind Zii EGG has announced their Zii Plaszma program which will allow their handsets to leverage Android.

The bottom line for us is an iPhone/iPod Touch like device with the following specs:

  • 3.5″ 320×480 true-color capacitive 10-point multi-touch display
  • X-Fi audio processing
  • Up to 32GB internal NAND Flash
  • 256MB RAM
  • HDTV support via HD Cable
  • Composite video In/Out
  • Forward facing VGA camera
  • Rear Facing HD camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Hardware GPS receiver with antenna
  • 3-axis Accelerometer
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Full size SDHC slot (supports up to 32GB of external SDHC Card)
  • USB 2.0 Mini-B (MTP and Charging)
  • Universal Docking connector (HDMI, USB, Audio Line-In/Line-Out, Composite-In/Out, UART)
  • Headphone socket, built in speaker and microphone
  • 1200mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • FCC and CE certification
  • Supports Linux-based Plaszma OS and Android
  • 115 x 62 x 12 mm
  • Light weight: 108grams

Those are some pretty good specs and the phone itself is pretty sexy looking.

Will it operate well? That’s another question… but the really interesting thing here is how ZiiLabs is positioning the Zii EGG: as a phone for manufacturers to purchase, rebrand and resell and also as a phone for developers to purchase if they would like.

The Zii EGG | Developer Edition, is a sleek, handheld development platform that enables Integrators, Developers and OEMs to create customized applications and devices supporting Linux-based Plaszma OS and Android development. The rich feature set of the energy efficient Zii EGG provides a powerful platform for creating compelling solutions that benefit from its advanced UI capabilities, multi-format audio and video processing, web browsing, OpenGL ES 3D graphics, content streaming and up to 1080p high-definition video output.

With a seemingly awesome product, why wouldn’t ZiiLabs just launch the Zii EGG themselves? Probably because making a mass market success is a lot harder than just building a pretty good phone. But will a manufacturer pick this up and then will a carrier run with it? Will any developers purchase this over the Android Dev Phone 1 or another device they can simply root?

It appears as if Zii is taking pre-orders of the EGG for $399… and bulk orders for the zero GB model are set to cost $199. Here is the Full Press Release:

  1. This got “creative” written all over it.
Google-up “creative Zii EGG”. NOT a small company.

  2. Considering that it completely lacks 3G and GSM hardware, its not really a phone.

  3. This thing looks like it could be pretty killer, but one wonders: will it be fast enough? I can;t understand the processor speed mumbo-jumbo in their press release, and the small battery indicates that power will be a problem unless the processor is a bit restrained. We’ll see.

  4. Er… this device is not a mobile phone.

  5. Its pretty amazing the amount of competition Android has stirred up. If the naysayers don’t understand what Android was all about by now then they never will.

  6. nothing innovative, just like the other android phones so far, besides the memeory there is nothing new.

  7. @A simple admirer there is a lot new, first its not a phone yet its a PMP, second it can push out 1080p HD quality to a tv, yes the OS is vanilla Android but that doesn’t mean it won’t end up being changed by the time it hits shelves as a phone.

  8. i want it, i want it, i want it!

  9. A Cool device but with somewhat confused intentions. No GSM and 3G means it can’t be used as a phone. As it is, its just a small Android MID/Media player device, and an expensive one @ $199 with no Flash. But Hurray for Android to even see such devices coming to market. Hope this trend continues into future…

  10. @Derreck: ‘No GSM and 3G means it can’t be used as a phone.’

It’s just not a phone, period.

  11. It’s not a phone, as other posters have said. Also, Zii Labs isn’t some tiny company, it’s owned by Creative.

This is the “developer edition” that seems to run Android as well, but more as a demonstration than anything. Creative will likely release an actual retail version soon to compete with the iPod Touch.

  12. About it NOT being a phone… in the article I say:
“The bottom line for us is an iPhone/iPod Touch like device”

I understand it isn’t a phone in its current state, hence the mention of iPod Touch. I should have been more clear about that – apologies. But if ZiiLabs gives this to a manufacturer who customizes/outfits it with the proper guts, it could very well become a phone.

That being said I realize the article was misleading and admit that the absense of any “Creative” mention was a mistake.

But its more Android so its all good :)

  13. To be fair, you do begin the article:

“The main downfall of this phone could be the name…”

    and also say things like:

“Those are some pretty good specs and the phone itself is pretty sexy looking.”

  14. not a bad player. u can buy the 0 flash version for $199 and then just stick in a 32gb SDHC card for around $40 (off ebay) and you got a nice little device here if i do say so myself. Zune HD is nice but Android takes this device over the top. Not in the market for any portable media player but wouldn’t mind picking this up on an impulse buy.

  15. As others have pointed out (and as other sites have correctly characterized it) it’s not a phone, it’s a MID.

That said, I wish it had a dpad and a 5 row qwerty keyboard (MIDs with keyboards exist, starting with the Nokia N810). I also wish it had an 800×480 4.3 screen.

All of that, a novatel mifi, and google voice … that would be an amazing combination.

  16. Man thats sweet if only it had a track ball (In the non-screen part of it)

It does not realy matter but i wonder how many MP the cam is on it. HD could mean anything these days.

  17. I don’t understand why people are saying ‘No GSM and 3G means it can’t be used as a phone`, it could have CDMA, TDMA, AMPS, iDen, TD-SCDMA, PDC, TACS, LTE, UMB, Do I really need to keep going, and still be a phone as these are all cell phone standards. But it has none of these or any other cell phone technology in it; Thats what makes it not a cell phone! Of course, this doesn’t exclude it from being used as a Wi-Fi VoIP Phone as I believe the video mentioned a microphone, and of course it mentioned video calls with the forward facing camera.

  18. this phone is BEAST – i just had to say that

  19. It looks like an iPhone made love to an HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1)

  20. why did you rip off the Wii logo?

  21. This is very cool. Hopefully devices like this will start to bring more game developers to Android. This has interesting potential. With huge storage and 1080p output could this be a portable DVR/ picture viewer. I hope so. I’ve been looking for something cool to hook up to my Samsung 46 HD. Or perhaps hook up your LCD/Plasma to Skype for video conferencing. Technology like this could be huge.

  22. “A simple admirer wrote on July 28, 2009

nothing innovative, just like the other android phones so far, besides the memeory there is nothing new.

    You own an I-Phone huh?

  23. good god, how did you come up with the idea of this being a phone?
this is not a phone, it’s what nvidia calls MID or in the words of creative and ziilabs a stemcell computer
also, they ARE marketing this themselves, the developer edition which is this one is called zii egg and the consumer edition, the one they will maket is called simply zii, they share the same looks and problably the very same specs but they haven’t announced it yet.

  24. This is not meant to be a phone. seems more like a tablet pc.. the speed is really good with android running on it! with all those interesting features, it will be nice to see developers getting them to work on the egg.

  25. Actually, if we are innovative enough, this device can become a phone. It has a mic, it has earphone and it can assess to WiFi. When installed the Skype or other VOIP program, it can be use to make calls even to other mobilephones. In actual fact, it had cameras and so can even be use for tele-conferencing too.

  26. Android and wifi power does that mean widgets just came to pmp’s

  27. Android and wifi power does that mean widgets have arrived on pmp’s

  28. they wld definitely work on a Zii Phone.. no reason not to. It’s their direction. Just like iPod Touch and later it’s an iPhone. Looks like more Zii products wld be on our way as they have been quietly working on this for quite some time. They have already move their entire focus to this line up. Hope their wish that more third parties like system integrators and others can help them accelerate this.

  29. Er guys all the articles say that the cam is hd compatible so he it even clicks photos @ 1920×1080 then that translates to an obsolete 2 mpx… That’s really weird innit?

  30. Er guys all the articles say that the cam is hd compatible so he it even clicks photos @ 1920×1080 then that translates to an obsolete 2 mpx… Dent in the shining armour for the egg innit or should i say crack in the shell?

  31. I want this, but with a 5 inch display.

Maybe some day. Hopefully this is just a prototype for variant devices.

  32. good tthing it not a dumb phone. I already have one and don’t want a cell phone.

  33. Hi,

I will say you will be seeing a mind blowing devices soon, it will be like nothing you have ever seen before at a price you’d almost die for. All I will say is keep your ears open for something extreme and global.

    Unknown Man ;)

  34. forgive my ignorance, but is it possible for the oems to change the ziiegg’s case? tho its specs are way better than ipod,i think ipod still wins on the looks department.

  35. First the Zii egg is not a phone, if you want to see the phone prototype go look up the Zii Trinity. Second The price is $200 if you buy it in bulk with no memory(as in flash memory) at all. Third the product is for anyone to buy and do whatever the @#$% they want with it including:
    Reselling
    Hardware editing
    Completely overhauling it
    Making something completely different
Anything else within the feasible reach of its stem-cell based processor. Witch is a lot for a hand held devise.
