Sprint HTC Hero Overview

The Sprint HTC Hero was announced on September 3rd, 2009, making Sprint the 2nd American mobile carrier to offer a phone based on Google's Android operating system. While HTC had already launched the Hero, making it available on European carriersthe previous month, Sprint's version of the phone was redesigned to disclude the "chin":

With a refined mouthpiece and brushed metallic look, Sprint's version of the HTC Hero has taken on a life of its own. The Hero's 5MP camera and 3.5mm headset work in harmony with Android Market and Sprint's unique services such as Sprint TV to provide a powerful multimedia device. The 1500mAh should go a long way to getting strong mileage out of the phone.

There is no doubt that this version of the Hero will come to the rescue for Sprint customers who have been eagerly awaiting the carrier's first Android device.

Sprint HTC Hero Reviews

CrunchGear: Android Perfected
They conclude: "The Hero is Android perfected and it is an excellent phone. I would recommend it over the Palm Pre and, dare I say it, something like the iPhone 3G. $180 isn’t too much to pay for the best Android phone on the market."
Leakdroid
"This phone will handle everything you throw at it, and come back for more. HTC’s customizations on the Hero go a long way to show the power of Google’s Android operating system, and HTC Sense puts a beautiful and functional polish on the look and feel of Android."
Wall Street Journal
Walt is starting to really enjoy Android and rates it amongst the mobile phone elite: "Overall, I found the HTC Hero to be the best Android phone I’ve tested, and a worthy competitor to the iPhone, the BlackBerry and the Pre."
Gizmodo Says Get It!
Real Deal Android: "The princess might not kiss this Hero because it's kinda ugly, but at least it'll actually get the job done now. If you've been waiting for an Android phone not on T-Mobile, or one that's finally just about ready for primetime, this is it."
CNET: Different Hero, Still Great
They gave it 4 out of 5 stars for an "Excellent" rating: "While it could use a boost in the performance department, the HTC Hero is the most feature-packed Google Android device to date, bringing some notable improvements and a highly customizable interface."
Engadget Still Finds It Sluggish
The only site that still felt the Sprint HTC Hero was sluggish, they said everything else besides the hardware design was pretty much the same. Definitely a positive review with a couple "buts" built in.
Wired: Buff Hardware, Feeble Software
Wired liked the camera, battery life, 3.5mm headset jack, flash and USB Mounting. They manage to find irritations with the HTC Sense customizations noting... guess what? LAG! But we all know this will likely be cured soon.

We take a quick overview of the software on the Sprint HTC Hero... which includes HTC Sense on Android 1.5 out of the box on launch.
The Lag Is Gone!
Initial reports of the HTC Hero software included "lag" which I prove is gone. This tests vs. the original European HTC Hero which HAD NOT yet received the firmare update.
Hero vs. Pre. vs. Hero
The Sprint HTC Hero compared to the European HTC Hero compared to the Palm Pre. Sprint Hero win!
Sprint Applications - Not Too Bad
I found the exclusive Sprint applications to be buggy, but here was a short stretch where they worked pretty well.
Sprint Applications - Not Too Good
I found the exclusive Sprint applications to be buggy, and this illustrates that perfectly. Afterwards I learned that you can't use these apps over Wi-Fi... which I was trying to do... but that doesn't explain the problem with Sprint TV which broke my Wi-Fi connection before loading.
