LG Optimus S Overview

The LG Optimus S is LG's first Android phone in collaboration with Sprint. Sprint is looking to market this as a super affordable Android device. It will cost only 50.00 after rebates. It has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, a 600 Mhz processor, a 3.15 MP camera, and more. It does run stock Android as per Sprint's request.

Perhaps the most unique thing about this phone is that it is one of three new phones that will be using the new Sprint ID. What this is, is an interface that allows you to automatically customize your home screen with widgets and apps that relate to the particular ID you have chosen.

For instance, sports fans can download the ESPN and get apps, widgets, wallpapers and more tailored to those who love sports without having to find it all themselves in the Android market. It's a unique feature that is a great marketing bulletpoint for anyone looking for a new, affordable phone that is easy to set up.

LG Optimus S Reviews

Engadget
"There's absolutely no doubt that the Optimus T and Optimus S offer incredible value. With nice hardware, up-to-date software, and most importantly, solid performance, there's a lot to like for both first-time Android users and smartphone aficionados on a budget."
PC Mag
"The Optimus S is the best budget Android phone we've seen, a well-tuned, feature-packed touch-screen slab with all of the functionality most consumers and small business users need."
Phonescoop
"The LG Optimus S impressed me even before I turned it on, and it held my spirits high through my entire test period. It isn't a perfect phone, and it won't replace the best Android superphones on the market, but for folks without a huge pile of cash to throw down up front, looking for a cute Android device that doesn't skimp on features, the LG Optimus S is a winner."
Phonearena
"LG is serious about their Android push, and the Optimus S is a very nice device. Like the Mazda RX-8’s tiny 1.3L engine, the Optimus S does a lot with a little and delivers smooth, quick performance. At $50 it is easily the best value on Sprint’s lineup right now and, unless you don’t want a data plan, the Optimus S should be chosen over featurephones like the LG Rumor Touch and Sanyo Innuendo every time. We are quite impressed with this little device, and while it won’t steal sales from the EVO 4G and Epic 4G, for now it is the only other Android device we’d consider in Sprint’s lineup until the Transform gets upgraded to 2.2. LG has shown us that you don’t need a high price tag to deliver top-notch performance in a smartphone."
CNet
"The LG Optimus S is an affordable yet full-featured Android smartphone for Sprint, but we did wish the call quality were better."
MobileTechReview
"If you're on a tight budget and want an Android smartphone, or perhaps simply your first smartphone, the LG Optimus S is a great way to start. It's the least expensive Android phone on Sprint, but that doesn't mean it's lacking. The specs are decidedly mid-range and that's a good thing given the low price. The phone feels good in hand and is solid."
InfoSyncWorld
"It might not have the best camera, or highest battery life/call quality performance, but the LG Optimus S for Sprint is certainly one fast little bugger that offers more than most would bargain for at $50 after its $100 mail-in rebate. Android 2.2 gives the phone a speed boost, and we're covered with Google applications right out of the box. There's also Sprint IDs, which satisfies our multiple personalities, and plenty of fresh new content piped in from the Android Market. The LG Optimus S has the advantage over its T-Mobile cousin, the LG Optimus T. To us, they are two different phones, and the Optimus S is just another reason competitors should fear Sprint's gnarly lineup."
Cellphone Trek
"So over all I would have to say that The LG Optimus S is pretty awesome. It’s one of the cheapest Android phones out on the market and just because it’s the cheapest doesn’t mean that it’s not the worst. It is running Android 2.2 – which might I add was a great experience from Android 2.1 phones – and it fully capable of taking whatever you might throw at it. The hardware design was rather elegant and perfect for anyone. Call quality and network speeds were I guess okay, nothing special. And the battery was a bit of a pain but other than that I found this phone was great. The Optimus S impressed me the second I took it out of the box. This phone is worth getting. Go check it out."
AndroidSPIN
"The Optimus S is a great first smartphone. It is a good introduction to Android, although if you are suggesting it to someone, PLEASE explain to them that this is not going to be adequate for Flash, any graphically intensive game, or able to have many applications loaded on it. I was very happy with the phone though, based on the fact that I was looking at the phone for what it was. I knew not to expect a great deal out of it – yet it performed better than I would have ever expected. I actually am sort of sad to see it go, as I have kept it as my go to phone when I know that I am going to be out and about for more than a ten hour period. As long as I have charged it before leaving I know it will last. It is a solid phone, and I am looking forward to seeing what LG does with their next phone, the LG Star."
Brighthub
"Overall for a $50 smartphone, the LG Optimus S has some quality hardware and up to date software. It is priced slightly higher than its T-Mobile counterpart, however."

LG Optimus S hands-on overview, Android 2.2 for less than $50 from Sprint
I asked LG to show an overview of the LG Optimus S, a $50 Android 2.2 Froyo device coming from Sprint this October. The LG Optimus S is one of the first Android-powered devices to offer personalized experience with Sprint ID, a new user-friendly way of personalizing Android devices with applications, widgets, ringtones and wallpapers. It will also be the only Sprint ID phone to launch with Android 2.2 offering users hotspot functionality. It features a 3.2-inch capacitive touch-screen and 3.2MP camera with 2x digital zoom on a sleek and slim design.LG Optimus S's mobile hotspot feature, connecting up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, gaming devices and digital cameras, at 3G speeds anywhere on the Sprint 3G network is an additional feature for $29.99 a month.LG Optimus S will be available beginning on Sunday, Oct. 31, in all Sprint retail channels including www.sprint.com and 1-800-SPRINT1 for just $49.99 with a new two-year service agreement or eligible upgrade and after a $100 mail-in rebate (pricing excludes taxes).
LG Optimus S, first hands-on!
The low-end Android game just got real, folks, with Sprint's introduction of the LG Optimus S, a $50 (on-contract, post-rebate) Android slatephone running Froyo on a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, with mobile hotspot functionality for up to five devices, 802.11 b/g WiFi and a 600MHz processor to run the whole shebang. As you'd expect in a world of 1GHz smartphones at the $200 price point, it's not quite up to spec, but that doesn't keep it from having a super-solid build, durable and weighty, that belies its low price. It honestly feels much like a Nexus One in the hand, though with nice big physical buttons instead of capacitive function keys, and of course a lower-quality LCD screen. There's an auto-focusing 3.2 megapixel camera on the back and a fairly responsive capacitive touchscreen up front, and though browsing was a little painful on the low-res screen, the Android 2.2 device sped through the UI without skipping a beat. If this device impresses as much after we throw it through a barrage of tests, I'll be hard to imagine ever spending a cent on a regular ol' featurephone again.
LG Optimus S (sprint) review
LG Optimus S, one of three devices the carrier is launching with its new Sprint ID pack system. As with the Sanyo Zio and the Samsung Transform, you will be able to select a pre-configured ID pack for your Optimus S. The ID packs include special widgets, wallpapers, and presets that suit a certain package--for example, the Yahoo ID pack will have customized widgets for all your favorite Yahoo news feeds. The device itself is pretty similar to the Optimus One and the Optimus T. It has a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen and will ship with Android 2.2. Features include a 3.2-megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G/EV-DO, and the ability to act as a mobile WiFi hotspot for up to five devices. The Optimus S is billed as an entry-level smartphone and is priced appropriately at $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year contract with Sprint. It will be available on October 31.

Sprint Resumes Gingerbread Rollout for LG Optimus S April 4th, Bugs Should Be Zapped

When Sprint originally pushed Gingerbread to their army of LG Optimus S users, the update broke a lot more than it fixed or improved. All sorts of issues plagued users, including one where the phone would refuse to charge. That’s a pretty grave bug and Sprint was forced to pull the update and fix it. [...]

Republic Wireless introduced their unique WiFi-driven network earlier this month and the first group of beta testers have begun receiving their devices. Sprint-ID Review: In-Depth Simplicity For Android Beginners [Optimus/Zio/Transform]

Providing an in-depth review of Sprint-ID is somewhat of an ironic oxymoron- the feature exists to provide Android beginner’s with a simple, non-obtrusive, out-of-the-box way of getting the content and apps they want on their phone. By all accounts, readers of Phandroid are (mostly) on the knowledgeable end of the Android scale and don’t have [...]

Right after Sprint was done announcing their phones they lifted the curtains to reveal them in all their full-bodied glory.
