Ready for your holiday shopping? If you are thinking of getting a hot new smartphone, you know there is an infinity of options out there. Whether the new phone is for yourself or a friend/family member, it is no easy task choosing the right. We have Android devices of all types, shapes, prices and sizes, so we have curated a list of the best devices for every type of budget and personality. Let’s take a look at the hottest smartphones of 2012!
Those who haven’t used a Nexus device have yet to taste the pure, unadulterated taste of Android. Nexus devices have become the epitome of true Android devices, with no manufacturer UIs, fast updates and over all great experiences. In comes the LG Nexus 4, the 4th iteration of “Pure Google” smartphones, just in time for your holiday shopping.
And boy is this phone the perfect gift for anyone looking to buy a powerful, yet affordable smartphone. Starting at only $300, this device offers some of the best specs in the market. It sports a powerful quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch HD display, NFC and everything else you can expect from a high-end smartphone. Not to mention Android 4.2, the latest and greatest Android OS version.
This Android version may not be as significant as past ones, but it brings some great new features. Some of these include gesture typing (like Swype), multiple user accounts and Photo Sphere. You can get the 8 GB LG Nexus 4 from the Google Play Store for only $300, or you can spend $50 more for the 16 GB version.
It is hard to not think of the Samsung Galaxy S series when we speak of high-end smartphones. These devices have been leading the smartphone market for years, and the latest iteration busted through doors and flipped tables to become the top-selling smartphone in the US (and many other countries). There is no way the Galaxy S3 will miss being on this list.
Samsung’s flagship device features amazing specs, like a quad-core Exynos processor (Snapdragon S4 in the US), 1 GB of RAM (2 GB in the US), a stunning 4.8-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED display, Android 4.1.1, NFC and all other standard specs. You will also benefits from features like Pop Up Display, SmartStay, Smart Call and S Beam.
This is truly a powerful device that will continue to compete against the best for a while. You can never go wrong with a Samsung Galaxy S series smartphone, so go ahead and purchase it from your carrier of choice if this is the one for you.
Need a little more to make your life complete? How about a Galaxy Note 2 with a whopping 5.5-inch HD display? This phone is not for everyone, but the phone/tablet hybrid breaks the boundaries between modern smartphones and tablets. Surely, this is one of the most wanted devices this holiday season.
The powerful Exynos quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM will keep everything speedy, while its large-screen-optimized features will give you the edge you need to stay productive and entertained. The Galaxy Note 2 is truly the king of “phablets,” so don’t hesitate to get this one if you are looking for a larger screen and great performance.
If what you want is to go through a full day (and more) without looking for a power outlet, there is no better option than the DROID RAZR Maxx HD. The device’s 3,300 mAh battery may not give you the same stunning battery life as the first RAZR Maxx, but it will still last longer than any other smartphone. The phone’s HD display and superior specs also make up for those extra hours.
Motorola has also given us something to look forward to by significantly improving their custom UI overlay. The no-longer-called-Blur software is much less intrusive this time around, closer to a vanilla Android experience. And the few UI changes are much less gimmicky than before, offering true functionality.
If you are looking to purchase the “all day, all night” smartphone, Verizon customers can now cut the chord and sign up for it. Long live the battery!
The HTC One X was among the best smartphones of 2012, but things got a bit better when HTC released the improved version. The One X+ bests its predecessor by including a 1.7 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor that is compatible with LTE. Users will also enjoy a larger 2,100 mAh battery and Android 4.1, along with HTC Sense 4+.
Everything else is identical, so you will still enjoy the stunning HD 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 display, superior camera and great build quality. This one is truly a no-brainer if you love the HTC One X but want something that competes directly with the latest and greatest.
The HTC One X+ will is an AT&T exclusive. You can go ahead and purchase it now, so go sign up if this is the one for you.
LG has taken its games a long way this year, especially with the LG Optimus G. This device is pretty much the non-Nexus version of the LG Nexus 4, and boy is it a great phone. The build quality is much better than past LG devices, which are not known for being good in this department.
The specs and performance are also up to par with the best of the best. With specs like a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2 GB of RAM and an HD 4.7-inch IPS+ display, this phone has what it takes to blow most smartphones out of the water. The only downside you might find is that it is missing Android 4.1, and has been released with Ice Cream Sandwich. This would not be a problem if we had an update coming, but LG hasn’t mentioned anything about the matter, and they are not necessarily known for giving timely updates.
The Motorola DROID RAZR M impressed the industry with a perfect mix of good build-quality, specs and experience, all without breaking the pocket. It is not a super phone, but comes with a very enticing price tag and great bang for your buck.
Specs include a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 4.3-inch “edge-less” display. It was released with Android 4.0, but the Android 4.1 update was scheduled for release before the end of 2012, and it has already started rolling out.
You can go ahead and get this bad boy now straight from Verizon Wireless for $100. We would recommend this phone for anyone that doesn’t need an expensive, high-end smartphone, but doesn’t want to sacrifice too much for a lower price.
Motorola may have taken the US by storm with its affordable, yet great DROID RAZR M, but HTC is here to compete with an equally awesome and low-priced smartphone. The HTC One VX is a mid-end, affordable smartphone built to disappoint very few. It has that stunning build quality HTC is well-known for, and specs that won’t harm your experience. Seriously, it is almost a high-end smartphone.
The One VX comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 1 GB of RAM, Android 4.0 and a large 5.5-inch Super LCD 2 display. This device will come to AT&T “soon,” so you might want to keep an eye out on it if you want this smartphone.
There is something all the devices above share, regardless of the specs and characteristics… none of them have a keyboard. Physical keyboard lovers have been getting the short end of the stick for a while, as most devices that sport one come with lesser specs. There are almost no “high-end” smartphones with a physical keyboard, but one of our favorites is the recently-released LG Mach.
This bad boy benefits from LG’s new and improved build quality, good specs and a great slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 1 GB of RAM, Android 4.0 and a 4-inch display.
And for $100 straight from Sprint, it is pretty hard to say no if you are looking for a good physical keyboard device.
Looking for a device that is sure to keep your bank account nice and full? If you want a very affordable device with some fair specs, your best bet would be to go with the HTC ChaCha ( HTC Status). This phone is by no means a “great device” and will likely not keep many of you fully satisfied, but boy is its price amazing.
Currently, this little guy goes for only $108.99 on Amazon. That is without a contract and GSM unlocked. You can take this little guy home for a bit over a Benjamin and activate it with any GSM carrier of your choice, which also gives you an option to save money on your monthly bill.
There are some other phones at this price range, but no device for about $100 will give you the quality and experience the HTC ChaCha offers. And if you love physical keyboards, this phone also has a great one. Go get it!
