We’re back on the final day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway with your last chance at winning some awesome prizes. Today, we’re taking a look at the GOgroove Phanbot, a simple stereo desktop speaker that just so happens to be the shape and color of our beloved Phandroid logo.

At $25, the PhanBot is a great little speaker for the money. About the size of a pineapple, the PhanBot packs some nice punch featuring two 2W speakers and a passive subwoofer located underneath (4W RMS with 8W peak power). Keep in mind the PhanBot is not Bluetooth enabled, but instead hooks up to your phone using the built-in 3.5mm headphone jack.

There’s also a battery inside for easier portability and glowing LED eyes that indicate the status of the battery. GOgroove even offers a free 3-year warranty with the PhanBot, for worry free buying. If the blue doesn’t quite suit you, there’s also the original Pal Bot in classic Android green for the same price. Both are linked below.

Gift idea: Belkin WeMo home automation accessories [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/20/gift-idea-belkin-wemo/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/20/gift-idea-belkin-wemo/#comments Sat, 20 Dec 2014 15:36:31 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=155700 Belkin WeMo house

It’s time for another day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway, giving you guys not only another great new gift idea, but a chance at winning some pretty awesome prizes. Today we’re taking a look at Belkin’s line of home automation accessories, a product line they call WeMo.

It wasn’t much at first, just a “smart” outlet and some WiFi bulbs, but over the past year or so, they’ve managed to expand their product portfolio, making it much more enticing to those who were on the fence. Let’s take a look at some of the more major products available in Belkin’s WeMo line.

WeMo Switch / Insight Switch

Belkin WeMo Insight Switch

If you’re looking to get started in the whole home automation bit, the best place to start is with the WeMo power switches. Basically, these guys connect to your home’s WiFi and allow you to turn off/on whatever is connected to them, be it lights, televisions, washers, or even a slow cooker.

The difference in the 2 models is the Insight Switch can actually monitor how much energy is being used from connected devices should you feel the need to really keep an eye on power usage. If not, you can save $10 and get the regular model.

Oh, and the Switch also comes in a bundle with the WeMo Motion, a motion sensing attachment that powers devices on/off as movement is detected (up to 10 feet away).

Buy: WeMo Switch $38 | WeMo Insight Switch $50 | WeMo Switch & Motion Sensor $74

WeMo LED Lighting Starter Set

WeMo LED Starter Set w Link

Having full control over your home’s lighting — even when you’re not around — is another big draw when it comes to home automation. Belkin makes things easy for you with their starter kit that comes with 2 of their LED bulbs and the WeMo Link to get everything connected to your home’s WiFi. Once connected, you’ll be able to control the bulbs — up to 50 of them — using the companion app. Belkin says the bulbs will last up to 23 years, so there’s a good chance they may outlive even you. Additional bulbs will run you about $30 for each.

Buy: WeMo LED Lighting Starter Set $86  | WeMo Light Bulb $30

WeMo Light Switch

WeMo Light Switch

The WeMo light switch is a WiFi connected switch that replaces the current one in your home. With the WeMo Light Switch, you can control lighting (or anything else), using your smartphone or tablet using the companion app.

As long as you’re connected to the internet — be it WiFi or 3G/4G — you will always have control over your home’s lighting. The switch even has custom away settings and a long press option.

The WeMo Light Switch does require a bit more setup, but is fairly easy for anyone who’s familiar with switching out their home’s light switches.

Buy: WeMo Light Switch $41

Arguably the best part about all the WeMo products is that they not only work in conjunction with the Android and iOS app, but IFTTT recipes to really expand the convenience and functionality. You can learn more about Belkin’s WeMo line by visiting their website here.

Gift idea: always know where your keys or smartphone is hiding with these great accessories [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/19/bluetooth-connected-key-smartphone-finders/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/19/bluetooth-connected-key-smartphone-finders/#comments Fri, 19 Dec 2014 14:20:41 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=155610 Motorola Power Pack Micro

We’re back with another day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway, giving you guys not only another great new gift idea, but a chance at winning some pretty awesome prizes. Today, we’re taking a look at next-gen key finders, Bluetooth enabled devices that can not only help you find where you left your keys, but your smartphone as well. Oh, and if you’re running Android 5.0 Lollipop or above, you can even bypass your lock screen when in proximity to them. Let’s take a look.

Motorola Keylink

Motorola Keylink

The Keylink is Motorola’s tiny little Bluetooth 4.0 enabled key fob. It’s water resistant (not proof) and using Motorola’s Connect app for most Android devices, can make either the key fob or your smartphone ring up to 100 feet away. Motorola says the battery will last up to a full year using a standard coin cell battery.

Buy: Motorola Keylink $25

Motorola Power Pack Micro

Motorola Power Pack Micro

The Motorola Power Pack Micro works much in the same way as the Keylink. Pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, and can either ring your smartphone using the Motorola Connect app, or use the app to ring the power pack. The difference is the Power Pack Micro features a 1,500mAh battery that can be used to juice up your smartphone in emergencies. It comes in a wide variety of colors and finishes: dark canvas, light canvas, spice, red, violet, lemon lime, turquoise, and royal blue (pictured above).

Buy: Motorola Power Pack Micro $40

HTC Fetch

HTC Fetch 1

By now you know how things little things work. The HTC Fetch features Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy to keep battery draining at a minimum (about 6 months before you need to replace the battery). It can connect from about 15 meters away and can even be used as a remote for the camera on your Android device. It’s only $25 right now, but you’ll probably want to get 2-day shipping for $6 extra if you’re looking to get this as a gift.

Buy: HTC Fetch $30

Tile

Tile white

The Tile, while a veteran so to speak when it comes to smartphone/key finders has only just recently become available for Android devices. The companion app — available here on Google Play — can either play a tone on whatever the Tile is attached to, or show you the last known connection of the Tile before you came out of contact with it. It’s only available for Android 4.4 KitKat devices and up, so that’s something to consider.

The best part is you can connect up to 8 these, attaching them to anything you frequently misplace. Also, the more you buy in a pack (up to 12), the bigger the discount. Could make a really great stocking stuffer and with available Amazon Prime shipping, it’s sure to arrive before Christmas.

Buy: Tile $25

Gift idea: 2 years later, the Mountek nGroove CD slot car dock is still our top pick [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/18/mountek-ngroove-cd-slot-car-dock-gift/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/18/mountek-ngroove-cd-slot-car-dock-gift/#comments Thu, 18 Dec 2014 15:00:24 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=155517 nGroove right angle

We’re back with yet another day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway, giving you guys not only another great new gift idea, but a chance at winning some pretty awesome prizes. Today we’re showing you a Phan-favorite, a product we covered 2 years ago here on this very site and have used nearly every day since then.

The Mountek nGroove is car dock unlike most others. Instead of suction cupping to your dash, window, or fitting into your car’s cigarette lighter, the nGroove is outfitted with an adjustable fin that fits snugly inside your car’s now obsolete CD slot. The places the your smartphone in an optimal position for quick viewing and interaction — the same spot as your car’s existing controls.

Mountek nGroove front back

The model we’re showing you above is the “Grip” model and the one we actually recommend, but there’s also the “SNAP” version which requires placing a magnetic sticker on the back of your phone and is really only ideal for flat backed devices.

Now, it’s important to survey the car where this will be installed. The nGroove isn’t a perfect fit for all cars and can block certain controls and/or navigation displays. The beauty of the nGroove is its simplicity which doesn’t require any sort of glues, screws, or clips. Should the CD slot not be the most optimal place for the nGroove, keep in mind it can also fit in any of your cars other grooves and spaces.

You can buy the Mountek nGroove from Amazon for less than $20 via the link below.

[Buy on Amazon: Mountek nGroove $18.69]

We’re back with yet another day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway, giving you guys not only another great new gift idea, but a chance at winning some pretty awesome prizes. Today we’re kicking it up a notch with the Nest thermostat and Dropcam security cameras. Both of these products are very popular, and they also happen to be owned by Google. Let’s take a look.

Nest Thermostat

Nest 1

The Nest Thermostat was the first device to shake-up the thermostat industry since perhaps the stone age. A thermostat may not seem like a sexy gadget to care about, but it controls a good chunk of your energy bill. The Nest learns your patterns and automatically adjusts to save you money. It also has great integration with Google Now.

  • Auto-Schedule – Remembers the temperatures you like and programs itself
  • Auto-Away – Saves energy by automatically turning itself down when you’re away
  • Remote control – Connect the Nest thermostat to Wi-Fi to control it from your smartphone, laptop or tablet
  • Easy install – Most people install the Nest thermostat in 30 minutes or less

Buy on Amazon: Nest on Amazon ($247)

Dropcam Webcam

dropcam

Dropcam is a series of wireless Wi-Fi webcams that can be placed around your house. Like Nest, the Dropcam webcams are a breathe of fresh air in the previously stale home security industry. You can monitor your home via mobile apps, speak through the webcam from afar, and get alerts when someone is in your house.

  • 60 Second Setup – Use your computer to find your Wi-Fi network, live stream in under a minute.
  • High Quality Video – Get into the details with 720p high-definition video.
  • Fast and easy setup – online and securely streaming 720p HD video in 60 seconds.
  • Field of View – 107 degrees diagonal, plus Night Vision and Zoom, means you don’t miss a thing.
  • Cloud Video Recording (CVR) – Review footage and make clips with optional secure offsite recording.
  • Stay connected with Two-Way Talk, Intelligent Alerts, Scheduling and Mobile & Web apps.

Buy on Amazon: Dropcam ($150) | Dropcam Pro ($200)

We’re kicking off yet another day of Phandroid’s Gift-a-Day Giveaway, giving you guys not only another great new gift idea, but a chance at winning some pretty awesome prizes.

You may remember our “must-have” charging accessories from week 1 of our gift ideas. I devoted a large section of Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 accessories because, at the time of writing, my favorite accessory was actually sold out on Amazon (with no date stock would be returning). But now, it looks like stock has finally returned, and you guy can now get your hands on the Tenergy 18W universal USB featuring Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology.

For as long as smartphones have been around, I dare say Quick Charge 2.0 is one of the single greatest advancements we’ve seen in the mobile space. I know, it sounds silly. But once you experienced it for yourself — and see how charging a nearly completely dead smartphone to 50% will only take a few minutes — you’ll become a believer.

Tenergy Quick Charge 2.0 charger diagram

The model we’re showing you today from Tenergy ($24) is not only cheaper than the Motorola Turbo Charger which runs $35 + shipping, but better in that it has a colored LED light to tell you when Quick Charge 2.0 is active. Because not all devices are compatible with Quick Charge 2.0, this takes the guess work out of wondering if your phone is charging at crazy Quick Charge 2.0 speeds, or just regular (it works fine for non-Quick Charge 2.0 devices too).

A partial list of some of the more popular Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 compatible devices can be found here and includes:

The best part is you can order the Tenergy Quick Charge 2.0 wall charger from Amazon today for only $24 and if you have Prime, it’ll be on your doorstep by Thursday. I’ve already ordered 3 (2 for myself, and 1 as a gift) and they work fantastic. Link provided below.

Gift idea: Pulse smart LED light bulbs with built-in JBL Bluetooth speakers [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/15/pulse-led-lights-with-built-in-bluetooth-speakers/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/15/pulse-led-lights-with-built-in-bluetooth-speakers/#comments Mon, 15 Dec 2014 15:21:10 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=155201 LED light Bluetooth speaker

We’re back with another gift idea for our Gift-a-Day Giveaway! If you live in a relatively modern home, you might be fortunate enough to have a recessed speaker system wired throughout every room. A luxury for sure, for all us normals living on a budget, we’re forced to get a little more… creative. Especially when it comes to looking for thoughtful, unique gift for the holidays. The Sengled Pulse LED lights are just such a gift.

More than the typical “smart” bulbs you can find at your local hardware store, these Pulse LED bulbs actually pack JBL Bluetooth speakers in each bulb, making it possible to fill an entire room with surround sound music, and a speaker system that’s tucked away out of sight.

Installation is a snap. Simply screw the lights into the socket of your choice and pair them up with the companion Android or iOS app. Once paired, you can both dim the lighting or adjust speaker volume using the easy-to-use app. That’s it.

$170 lands you the master bulb with matching satellite bulb and they come in either Pewter (silver) or Candy Apple (red) colors. Users can purchase additional satellite bulbs (up to 8) that can be set up to 100 feet apart to really get the sound flowing throughout a house or apartment. The bulb — with audio — is only 15W with a peak of 30W. Anyone interested can get started by picking up the Pulse LED Bluetooth speaker bulbs from Amazon right here.

Happy Sunday, and welcome to another gift idea for our Gift-a-Day Giveaway! Today’s gift ideas are all about headphones. Everyone listens to music, podcasts, or watches videos with their gadgets. If you want to really immerse yourself (or not bother the people around you) a good pair of headphones is important. We’ve got a trio of headphones on sale right now from AndroidArea.

ZipBuds SELECT

ZipBuds SELECT

A good pair of over-ear headphones can make sitting at your desk all day a much more pleasant experience. The ZipBuds SELECT are comfortable to wear, and they offer professional sound quality. But the coolest thing about the SELECT headphones is the zipper cord. You can literally zip the cord up to prevent tangling and to make it comfortable to wear all day. It’s pretty nifty.

SPBEAT9 Bluetooth Headphones

active headphones 2

Our next pair of headphones is perfect for the active person in your life. Running with headphones can be super annoying. They fall out out of your ears; the cord is swinging around. It’s a mess. The SPBEAT9 Bluetooth headphones are great because they don’t have any cords, and the wrap-around design makes them sturdy on your head.

Toccs Feather Buds

feather buds

The TOCCs Feather Buds are the perfect mix of comfort, convenience, and high-quality sound. They’re super lightweight, and since they use Bluetooth there is a minimal amount of wires that can get tangled. The Feather Buds also come with a set of ear hooks so you can use them without worrying about them falling off.

We are officially over halfway through our 20 days of gift ideas for the Gift-a-Day Giveaway! For today’s gift idea we’ve got an awesome accessory that turns your smartphone into a bow. You can play games (and excercise} with a bow just like if you were at an arcade or in the Hunger Games. It’s called BowBlade.

The BowBlade looks like a normal-ish bow, but the big difference is a mount for your phone. Where you would normally look down the sites to aim you place your phone in the grips. BowBlade pairs with your phone to act as a controller for over 80 Android and iOS games.

BowBlade is not only for fun and games. It can be used as a fitness device since you have to use more than just your thumbs to play, but it’s also great for people in wheelchairs since you don’t have to stand up. It’s a fun and healthy time for everyone. Just make sure your aim is good.

Cars. Some people love them, other people simply use them. Regardless of your feelings about cars you probably own one if you’re 16 years or older here in the U.S. Our latest gift idea for the Gift-a-Day Giveaway is all about your car’s health and security. The CarLock is a simple plug & play device that sends valuable information to connected apps.

Think of the CarLock as a baby monitor for your car. Once plugged into your car’s OBD port (all cars made after 1996 have one) a wealth of information is available in the CarLock app for Android and iOS. Here’s what it can do:

  • notification of vehicle moved
  • notification of device disconnected
  • notification of engine started
  • notification of vibration detected
  • automatically alert emergency contacts in case of a crash
  • notification of low car battery
  • notification of high battery drain
  • track your car’s location via GPS

If that sounds cool you can snag the CarLock for 57% off right now from AndroidArea. Get 24/7 car protection and never worry again.

Gift Idea: relive the glory days of gaming with the NES30 Bluetooth Controller [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/09/bluetooth-nes-controller-for-android-ios/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/09/bluetooth-nes-controller-for-android-ios/#comments Tue, 09 Dec 2014 15:18:06 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=154861 NES30

Modern gaming consoles are amazing. They have HD graphics, powerful processors, high-tech sensors, and they can play incredibly immersive games. Still, there is something special about dusting off the old Nintendo and playing some 8-bit games. Not everyone has a NES lying around, but with the NES30 controller you can get the same feel while playing mobile games.

Today’s gift idea for the Gift-a-Day Giveaway will surely give you a touch of nostalgia. The NES30 is Bluetooth replica of the original Nintendo Entertainment System controller. The only difference is the four X, Y, B, and A buttons instead of the classic A and B. Everything else is the same 1980’s grey plastic and mushy Start and Select buttons.

The NES30 is compatible with Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows. It can connect via Bluetooth or USB cable. The controller comes with a detachable kickstand to prop up your phone or tablet. For just $30 you’ll be able to play all your modern mobile games and emulators with the comfortable grip of an old friend.

Gift Idea: Fly these drones into orbit and take crystal clear video from the sky [CONTEST] http://phandroid.com/2014/12/08/gift-idea-drones-for-every-price-point-and-experience-level-contest/ http://phandroid.com/2014/12/08/gift-idea-drones-for-every-price-point-and-experience-level-contest/#comments Mon, 08 Dec 2014 15:03:54 +0000 http://phandroid.com/?p=154730 DJI Phantom

We’re already a third of the way through our Gift-a-Day Giveaway, but the gift ideas keep on coming. Make sure to visit this page and improve your chances of winning by entering every single day. Today’s gift idea is all about the drones. They’re very popular these days, and will surely be on many wish lists this holiday season. We’ve got every angle covered.

Many different kinds of drones are available today. Some are super expensive and can hold heavy things, others are cheap, tiny, and barely strong enough to fly in the wind. It doesn’t matter how much you want to spend, or how much experience you have. There is a drone out there for you. We’ll start simple and work out way up.

Code Black Drone, $64

code black drone

The Code Black Drone is perfect for beginners. It’s easy to fly and hard to break. The CBD is about the size of the palm of your hand, which makes it easy to fly indoors while you practice. When you get good the CBD can do flips in all four directions, and it even has a camera for video footage.

Micro Drone 2.0, $75

micro drone 2

A slight bump up from the CBD is the Micro Drone 2.0. This drone is also very small and hard to break. It’s a great beginner drone for flying indoors, and it can also do flips. The thing that puts this drone slightly above the CBD is its camera. It’s the only micro drone in the world that can carry a camera with a swiveling lens to capture all angles.

Panther Drone UFO, $110

panther drone

The Panther Drone is much bigger than the previous “micro” drones, but it’s still lightweight and super durable. If you want to be able to fly outside in windy conditions you will want to upgrade to the Panther. It can also do 360-degree flips and it has an adjustable camera for video footage.

DJI Phantom, $450

dji phantom

The DJI Phantom has been universally praised as the best drone for casual fliers and photographers, and it’s not even the most expensive on our list! It can be set up and ready to fly in just minutes. The Phantom has GPS that helps compensate for windy conditions, which makes it easy for you to control. For video and photo footage you can attach most GoPro’s.

3DRobotics IRIS+, $750

3drobotics iris

The IRIS+ can be flown manually with the controller, or with the really cool “autopilot” mode. It can land itself automatically or return to a spot when it flies out of range. When you’re ready to take some video footage you can even attach a GoPro. If you buy this drone you better know what you’re doing.

And now what you’re all waiting for: another chance to win a Nexus device or smartwatch in our Holiday giveaway! Entries for this day will remain open until 11:59 PM (Eastern) on December 21st. Good luck!
