This could be the new fingerprint scanner for the Samsung Galaxy S8

Ultrasonic fingerprint scanners may be the next new craze to hit our smartphones, as we have already seen LG and Qualcomm release new technology using these scanners. Today, Synaptics got in on the fun with the announcement of the FS9100 fingerprint sensor.

This new fingerprint sensor can be placed under the front 2.5 glass, removing the need for a traditional home button. The technology allows for “high-resolution scanning through 1mm of full cover glass”.

Natural ID FS9100 optical fingerprint sensors are designed for placement under the cover glass, including 2.5D glass, located in the front, bottom bezel of devices.  Under cover glass biometrics eliminates button cut-outs and glass thinning processes required by capacitive under-glass sensors, leading to glass yield improvements. The highly reliable FS9100 optical solution excels with wet finger performance, and being protected by glass, is durable, scratchproof, waterproof, and eliminates ESD concerns.

The reason this is so important is due to the numerous rumors and reports that Samsung is looking to replace the home button on the Galaxy S8 with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The company has been said to be in development of its own ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, but this release by Synaptics seems to follow everything that we’ve seen regarding the Galaxy S8.

If you add in the fact that Synaptics has also already announced a new pressure-sensitive display, Samsung could tap the company to be one of the main vendors for the upcoming device. Although, there is the problem of making sure that these parts will be ready in time for Samsung to unveil, then release, the device.
