We would love it if this was BlackBerry’s new QWERTY phone

Another Weibo leak offers up a potential first look at a forthcoming smartphone, and this time we get a look at a very interesting option from BlackBerry. The purported device is said to be the keyboard-donning BlackBerry Mercury (codename, of course).

While we can’t be sure of its authenticity, what we can see here is a phone that definitely takes on BlackBerry’s flavor in the keyboard department. The pad is fixated in a vertical orientation, and unlike the PRIV, the keyboard is exposed at all times.

That design trait is a throwback to BlackBerry’s classic flair made popular on devices like the BlackBerry Bold. This could be the perfect excuse to try out Android for those who can’t seem to pull themselves away from that iconic device, or perhaps even devices like the BlackBerry Passport.

BlackBerry loves this design, and for good reason.

Unofruntately, that’s all there is to know right now, as the leakster didn’t have much to share in the way of further information. Previous rumors did suggest this would be a mid-range option, though, with 4GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 625 chipset leading the charge.

That makes us think the device will be pushed for work more than play, but what else is new for BlackBerry in that regard? With the DTEK50 and DTEK60 out, BlackBerry should have plenty of time to focus on bringing this one to market at some point in early 2017.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.
