During the Pixel event this morning in San Francisco, Google finally unveiled its Pixel and Pixel XL phones. The most interesting thing about the reveal is that Google seems to finally be going head-to-head against Apple in attempts to convert die-hard iPhone fans to the Google ecosystem.
Included in every Pixel box is an adapter that makes it easy to switch from Apple to Google’s new phone. The adapter allows you to connect directly to an iPhone in order to automatically transfer data including contacts, photos, and even iMessage messages. This is similar to what Apple did last year with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, as they allowed users to port their data from Android devices.
In a recent interview, Hiroshi Lockheimer hinted at this direction, stating that the premium category is one of important focus.
Premium is a very important category. It’s where Apple is also very strong. Is there room for another player there? We think so.
