Google Maps beta update makes it easier to avoid bad traffic

0

Google is making it easier to avoid bad traffic in Google Maps in the latest update. You may know this feature already exists in the form of allowing you to avoid (or allow, if you change your mind) ferries, toll roads, and highways. Those options can now be toggled using your voice, something that’s a bit of a godsend as these options have to be set each time you want to start a new trip.

Here are the various phrases you’ll need to bark out once you hit the microphone button:

  • Avoid toll roads
  • Avoid ferries
  • Avoid highways

Beyond that key quality of life change, Google has added notifications for nearby traffic, so when you’re getting ready to leave you can get a quick idea of the conditions in your area. If you want these new features today then you’ll want to enroll into the beta, something you can do right here. Once you’re in, head to Google Play for an update.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.
