The Moto 360 (2014) wont be getting Android Wear’s big 2.0 update
Even when it launched back in 2014, the first generation Motorola Moto 360 was never the most graceful smartwatch. This largely had to do with the under powered OMAP processor, something that delivered lackluster battery life and poor performance.
Guess that’s why we weren’t too surprised to learn today that the smartwatch wont be receiving the big Android Wear 2.0 update introduced at Google I/O. Motorola confirmed the information on Twitter, oddly enough when a user asked about the maintenance release that launched last week for the 2nd Gen model. They did mention that “essential” security updates could still be in the cards, but they’d need to evaluated first.
Android Wear 2.0 brings a dramatic Material Design overhaul to the tiny smartwatch UI, as well as introduces new features like expanded notifications, handwriting or keyboard for typing on the tiny display (something more easily said then done), and new APIs for developers. It’s a big update and while it’s sad to see it skipping the original Moto 360, it had a good run. This is also something to keep in mind should you come across any Moto 360 deals around the internet.
