HTC One X9 might be too good to be true, after all

0

Yesterday, word about the HTC One X9 leaked out, with one outlet suggesting the device would be the stuff dreams are made of. We figured it to be too good to be true for an HTC device considering they don’t have a track record of trying to best everyone in the specs arms race.

Those specs included a Snapdragon 820 chipset, 5-inch Quad HD display, 23MP camera, 3,500mAh battery, 64GB/128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. Sounds ridiculous. Almost sounds too good to be true, we said. Turns out, that feeling might be spot on.

A couple of solid leaksters have come forth to give their take on the rumor, noting that while they believe the device does exist (though as the HTC E56 internally as of this time), they have seen nothing that suggests it’ll be that much of a beast. In fact, they say it should come in below the HTC One A9 when it comes to on-paper specs and price point. Here’s @evleaks’ take:

All wrong. E56 sports a Mediatek SoC & 5.5″ FHD display. Memory is just 2GB/16GB, camera 13MP/4UP (OIS), w/ a 3000mAh battery.

LabTooFer seemed to corroborate those feelings in a series of Tweets of his own, though he didn’t have hard specs to confirm. To be fair to the original report by reputable leakster Steve Hemmerstoffer — which many of us submitted to Google Translate which could make for a messy translation — he never claimed that he personally obtained evidence that those specs were real. Reading more closely, he only mentioned the specs as they’d been floating around the Weibo space, but said in that very report that he found it hard to be true.

And that’s why we stress the importance of taking a grain of salt with rumors, folks. Even the new information by the two other reputable leaksters should not be taken as gospel — it’s wise to  just wait for the official details before we come to any conclusions.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.
