One OS to rule them all: Google is planning to merge Chrome OS into Android [REPORT]

You may remember back during Google’s big Nexus event, the all new Pixel C was also introduced. It didn’t make much sense then but the tablet — which by name, many were expecting to run Chrome OS — was actually running Android instead. Now things are starting to make a whole lot more sense.

In a new report from The Wall Street Journal, they’re reporting that Google in planning to merge Chrome OS into Android completely. The new single operating system is said to be unveiled in 2017, but we could see an early version of it as early as next year (possibly at Google I/O). The new version of Android (Android N?) will be the one OS to rule them all, running on everything from smartphones, to tablets — even PCs. With future Chromebooks no longer running Chrome OS, expect the name of Google’s affordable netbooks to change as well (although the Chrome web browser name wont be going anywhere).

It only makes sense. Android is everywhere and because developers will spend resources building apps on a platform with actual market share (Chromebooks only account for less than 3% of PCs sold according to IDC), it was only a matter of time before Google gave up on Chrome OS. Of course, no matter how solid the report, everything is rumor until Google makes it official. Stay tuned for more.
