Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Lollipop upgrade spreads to NA and more EU countries

Sony today announced that the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for the Sony Xperia Z3, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet would start to reach more regions as soon as today, including those in North America and many more countries throughout Europe (it was previously only available in Nordic and Baltic countries).

As most other OEMs have done with Lollipop, Sony integrates the best of the new update’s features — including notifications on the lock screen, mult-user support and a new notification shade — with the suite of software they already provide. That beloved software has also been upgraded with a Material Design look and feel across the board for those who are into that sort of thing.

Want the upgrade? You’ll have to have a computer handy as this is an over-the-wire process. Download Sony’s upgrade tool here (PC and Mac only, sorry Linux folks) and connect your smartphone, and it should find and download the necessary firmware to get you up and running on Lollipop.

Sony also took this opportunity to confirm that the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia C3 will eventually get aboard the Lollipop train. There’s nothing to worry about for folks of other Xperia Z devices — even the very first one — as the company previously announced all of them would eventually see the new drags. Let us know how the upgrade is treating you once it’s hit your smartphone!

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Just finished updating my Xperia Z3 Compact!

    “Android is upgrading…
    Optimizing app 3 of 410.”

    T_T

    1. Imma use ExpiriFirm to manually flash..don’t want to wait for T-Mobile

      1. Lemme know if it works. I have the TMO one, too.

        1. Will do..was thinking about doing a video for YouTube…. We will see..but I’ll definitely reply here..I’m at work right now…

      2. I don’t think T-Mobile is compatible with other regions

        1. No..but the NA Firmware should be available… Flashing official Firmware does not void warranty or require Root or unlocked boot loader…Imma do more research though…

          1. please do I tried to flash a non tmobile firmware it didn’t work check xda that is where you may see others who tried

          2. Woah…OK..thanks for the heads up..I looked at Expirifirm last night and saw the latest firmware for North America was the 4.4.4 build..but I haven’t checked it today..but I forgot about T-Mobile adding their stuff too..

I have to assume that the T-Mobile testing should not take as long as a Touchwiz or NatureUI device…Xperia Z3 is pretty Stock..

I don’t want to mess my phone up…I will trade it back for when the Z4 comes out…

    2. Can we a get a video review?!?!

      please..pretty please…cherry on top?!?!

        1. Lol..was actually looking for something with your opinion and input..but cool..thanks..

    3. I only had 328 apps to optimize. The overall upgrade from start to finish took 2 1/2 hours for me since my work internet is essentially midgrade DSL.

    4. I remember in a podcast how you showed off how much you’d pimped out your z3 compact to look like lollipop. Then you went back to the m8….

  2. Well I have the Xperia Z2 (D6503). Hopefully this means I’ll get my update by Q4 2015 :D

    1. You can already side load an official Sony rom if you like.
I’ve done it and it works great :)

  3. z3v?

    1. That’s Verizon’s model. Gonna have to wait for them to approve it first.

      1. but I dont wanna!!!! :(

        1. I’mma tell you like a G told me, root rules everything around me.

          1. But rooting ruins the Camera Right?

          2. Unlocking the Bootloader degrades the camera, not actually rooting it.

          3. OMG Becky!!!!!!

Edit: there is still no way to root the D6616.. The Bounty is still open on XDA :(

          4. haha too bad no one is working on root for this. Know I’m going to get blasted for this but I had someone willing to buy this z3v for the cost of a swappa note 4 but I’m too nervous about not having the insurance on it from Verizon to do it.

  4. I assume this is for the unlocked devices. When do we get this for Tmobile Z3?

  5. I was able to get this update via Sony Companion app for Windows on Saturday. US unlocked Xperia Z3 Compact — D5803 on AT&T

    1. did you change any settings to see it? D5803 on T-mobile. I bought mine from the UK when it first came out but I don’t think that should make a difference.

      1. I didn’t have to change any settings.

  6. Unlocked D5803 on T-Mobile prepaid here. My NFC firmware update failed. This is disappointing, but I have never actually used NFC, so I’m not missing out on anything. Everything else seems to have worked, though.

  7. Maybe I’ll get lucky and Sony will send my Z3 Tablet back with Lollipop installed.

  8. I’ve got lollipop running on my Z2 at the moment. Biggest benefit I can tell so far is much better battery life and the UI in general looks better.

    1. This material design crap has got to go.

      1. man I thought sony had THEMES to swicth around

      2. I don’t mind it for now but could see myself getting sick of it after a couple of months.

  9. got the update this morning (z3 compact in France)
