It’s Friday, and that means it’s time to take a look at what’s poppin’ over at Android Forums this week. Is now the time to buy your next smartphone? Was Inbox all hype? Can a Newton PDA from the year 2000 put today’s smartphones in their place? All that and more below.

Buy now or wait?

It’s an interesting time of year to be a smartphone buyer, the current generations flagship devices have all been announced, but we are only a few months away from CES, MWC, and next year’s crop of top-tier handsets. Holiday sales make buying now a tempting choice, but should you pass on phones like the Nexus 6, Motorola Droid Turbo, and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in favor of what is surely just over the horizon? My gut says buy now, but don’t take my word for it.

The cure for a sluggish phone

There is a conspiracy theory that smartphone makers intentionally program their devices to start acting up after a certain amount of time. You know, a a two year old phone that suddenly starts going wonky is great incentive to run out and buy a brand new phone. We don’t actually subscribe to this theory, but why is it that older phones will never run as smoothly as they did on launch day? Let’s get to the bottom of this one.

New Gmail or Inbox?

The Inbox hype has died down slightly now that more folks have had a chance to check out Google’s new alternative to Gmail. Never one to make it easy on consumers, though, the tech giant has pushed an update to Gmail that has many wondering which email app is the best. There are pros and cons to both. Let’s discuss.

Old tech still keeping up

How does a turn-of-the-century Newton PDA stack up against its smartphone contemporaries? At least when it comes to text entry, surprisingly good. We’ll let you decide whether thats a good or bad thing. Take a walk down memory lane with us as the technology of yesteryear is compared to today’s mini pocket computers we call smartphones.
