This video showing the Nexus 5 in 6 new color options looks highly suspect…

19

There’s a video making the rounds the evening. In the vidjya, someone in their parent’s dank, dark basement is browsing the Nexus 5’s familiar listing on Google Play, clicking through 6 new color options for the device: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

As we all know, currently, the only options available to anyone purchasing the Nexus 5 are either black or white. So does this mean we’ll soon see new Nexus 5 color options arrive in the Play Store? Not likely. Upon closer inspection we noticed that, aside from how janky the colors look on the web page, a load screen (along with URL change) always accompanies a color change on Google Play. Go ahead and try it for yourself. Now come back to this video. See what we mean?

Now this doesn’t mean we wouldn’t do backflips if it came to pass, just don’t go getting your hopes up.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Pretty cool. I’m still happy that I got mine in black within the first week this time =D

  2. Pretty sure it’s fake.
You get some sort of fade in/out affect when switching between the white and black color options on the Nexus page. In the video, the color change is instant.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  3. The colors look like a quick photoshop. Not sure what is exactly off, but the colors look kind of cheap.

  4. Definitely fake. Why would someone show a poor quality video of this if it was true. It’s not hard to mock up a local page to make it look like the Play store and just have a javascript to switch between local images (i.e. the photoshop images of the different colours).

    1. i do also think so that this is a fake

      1. Homer’s head X-ray for a profile picture. Wicked.

  5. I guess I just don’t give a crap about color of phones, I keep my G2 in a case anyways…

  6. So do people really get some sort of thrill from being able to say “I faked out a bunch of Android fanboys”? Get a life.

  7. What would be the point anyways. The phone is so fragile, I can’t imagine anyone using it with no protective case.

    1. I’ve had a January Nexus 4 without a case. Its got a glass back and both front and back are in stellar condition. I only put it in a case when I am doing something I KNOW is risky, like riding the motorcycle or working in the garage.

      1. I’ve never broken a phone before I owned a Nexus 4. Now I have 3 of them. Two of them have shattered front screens and the other has a cracked back.

        1. Guess I’m careful. Ive actually never shattered a phone screen (knock on compressed wood fibers). I don’t like cases, I never saw the point in upgrading to the thinner, sleeker phone only to make it bulky, thick and heavy with a case. The girlfriend, on the other hand, is rocking the fusion case. She hates it but she has broken every phone I have given her.

    2. Never put a case on any of my phones and I’ve never once broke or seriously damaged one.

      1. Then you’ve never had the pleasure of owning a Nexus 4 :)

  8. Yep..it’s a hoax!!!! Went right to Google Play and you’re right anytime to change color or memory a “load screen” pops up so this guy somehow rigged a different website

  9. Seriously? I would trade in my White 32g for a Purple any day! Kinda bummed I had to rush and buy it ASAP. Now not only do newer buyers get bigger speaker grills and tighter buttons but they get colors too! ):

    1. I wouldn’t mind a red Nexus 5.

  10. Didn’t put any case on my Black one. Just a screen protector after I got few small scratches on the screen. Like the soft touch back, reminds me the black G1.

  11. it’s a fake but the red Nexus 5 could be real
