We can’t for-the-life-of-us figure out how Google managed to overlook this when launching the Chromecast back in July, but for whatever reason, casting from the web was a uniquely YouTube feature, made possible through the Google Cast Chrome extension. Starting today, that familiar casting icon has arrived on the rest of Google’s compatible services on the web, namely Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Music.

Most of you probably didn’t even notice their absence given the Android apps were probably doing a good job at tiding you over since day 1. But for those times when your Android tablet or phone isn’t available, casting from your computer is the next best thing.

  1. Been casting GOOGLE PLAY MUSIC from desktop since Day One………. (?)

    1. Probably through Chrome, right? He’s saying that it can be directly cast from your mobile app now.

At least, I hope that’s what he’s saying. I haven’t gotten the update yet.

      1. That’s not what I’m reading, not really sure what. Been casting both from both since Day One.
Honestly, nothing new here. Not a slam on anyone,or,anything unique to my desktop,I assure you.

A YOU-TUBE search will no doubt show this has been there since the beginning.

  2. That’s great, but when is this thing REALLY going to be useful and support Amazon Video? Google needs to go to Amazon with their pocketbook open and find out what it’s going to take to get a native app on Android and support added to Chromecast. Enough is enough.

    1. Nope.

If Amazon won’t even include the Play Store or Google apps on Kindle, Google should make sure Amazon is at the very bottom of their priority list.

      1. I guess that’s one less Chromecast they’re going to sell then.

      2. Because spite is a great way to do business.

    2. Have you seen Amazon Prime’s selection? We’re not missing much.

  3. Hasnt hit my Google Play Music yet, wonder why,

  4. I’ve been casting Google Play Music from my desktop since the first day I had my Chromecast…

    1. Is this good or not ? I also want to cast Google Play Music from my desktop

      1. Nothing has prevented this since the devices release.

  5. Ok (off topic) google+ would be a better hit if the play store was integrated directly no extra app needed just an option to totally sync just a thought.

    1. Soon. Google is combining all their stuff. Just look at YouTube commenting system. LoL!!

  6. interesting, the thing i disliked about gp music app though was if the song was on your device, it refused to play through chromecast (haven’t tried it for a few months so maybe that’s changed) even if it was something you bought from google play it didn’t seem to matter (wasn’t about to delete my music from my phone just to make it work)

  7. Hopefully, the next step is to allow local Google Play downloaded music/movies cast from your mobile device.

While I appreciate they finally have this part figured out, I only use GP movies when on vacation and wifi is usually spotty or requires a special login screen that Chromecast can’t seem to figure out. I’d really like to be able to download said movie at home and then stream it to Chromecast when I get to where I’m going.

    1. I think they have a new app for that now. Some media player thingy thats supposed to allow you to stream locally stored videos and pics. Oh wait, you said GP movies, sorry. Well if its downloaded locally the new app might work for you.

  8. Too bad Copy isn’t as reliable as Dropbox or Google Drive.

  9. Neither one is working on my desktop. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong. No cast icon on either one.

    1. Make sure you’re using Chrome, and using the Google Cast extension (linked in the post).

      1. The Cast icon just suddenly appeared on Google Music after fiddling with it for a bit, go figure, lol. Weird.

  10. Google is moving too slow with chromecast…. They need to open it up to developers… I understand why they don’t… It would mean more sells for google.

They also need to update google play like stated below , but also with a way to add the movies you already own to your collection and a option for a unlimited selection of movies like google music. I know its called Netflix , but google should be getting in on The action.
