PSA: Careful with those Nexus 5 “pre-orders” popping up on eBay

Nexus 5 on eBay

Our Spidey senses are telling us that the Nexus 5 release is just around the corner. We’ve seen enough leaks, even the official packaging showing the N5 coming in both black and white varieties. If retailers in some part of the world already have the Google’s latest phone in their possession, it doesn’t seem too far fetched to believe others do as well.

That being said, you might be scrounging the net looking for 3rd party outlets to ensure you aren’t one of the many prospective buyers left high and dry on launch day, even if it means paying a little extra for it. Take this latest eBay listing we were tipped off to a few moments go. The listing shows five Nexus 5s currently available for pre-order, shipping between Oct. 24th, and Oct. 26th. At first glance, it seems legit. Seller has a perfect 100% satisfaction rating, and according to the listing, you can buy a Nexus 5 32GB for a reasonable $650.

Before you rush off to buy one for yourself, scroll down a little further and the description lets you know exactly what you’re paying for. Apparently, you would only be paying for this seller to attempt and pick up the Nexus 5 32GB on launch day, in which case he will flip it and sell it to you for a sizable profit. It’s not a thousand dollars by any means, but enough to where you’d probably want to wait and try your luck on launch day which — after deciphering Kit Kat’s social updates — was… yesterday. Drat.

  1. I hate these eBay phuck scum who did this with the Nexus 4. Buy huge quantities and re-sell them. Thanks for crashing the ability for us to snag one asswipe.

    1. they should have a limit of 5 per address(for a little while atleast)

      1. If a device is in short supply they should limit it to 1 per order and 2 per shipping address.

        1. But if someone orders two seperately, then they have to ship 2 packages to the same address

    2. Would doing pre-orders for the Nexus 5 avoid what happened last year you think?

      1. A limit of two phones each person until there are enough phones for everyone to order.

      2. Probably not, it would help them determine the potential demand though. They were clearly way off on that last time.

    3. God damn entrepreneurs.

  2. That same seller sold an 8GB Nexus 4 for $489. It’s sad that people do this, and sad that people buy this stuff too.

    1. Shame on those who have no patience and decide to pay more then what the device cost. A friend of mine bought a Nexus 4 few months ago and she paid $50-$75 more then what the Nexus 4 actually cost. When I told her that phone cost less then what she paid for it, she got pissed…in a way I don’t blame her because she didn’t know the actual price of the phone, but still…if she would’ve done her homework she would’ve save $50-$75.

  3. The good thing is, no one has purchased one. Yet.

    1. So you’re saying I still have a chance?

      1. Definitely! I’d say go for the one listed at $700. Should be a bargain at that price.

  4. It’s increasingly seeming like there’s not going to be a fancy rollout for this thing.

    1. I think we are all hoping they will do an Apple announce and start shipping within 24hrs. AND not sell out after 15 minutes.

      1. You almost had me.

… but then you put that nonsensical wishing at the end. LOL

        1. I think that is Eric Schmidt’s ebay account. Lol… He knows the Play Store will fail with the roll out & decided to boosts his xmas fund providing timely delivery where Google can’t.

  5. I just ordered 3…

    1. Dude! Can I have one? I’ll pay you, I swears!

  6. The title really should say “cmon people dont be stupid”. Maybe they are the same people that always get malware.

Buy huge quantities and re-sell them.

      1. The irony of this post is earth-shattering.

        1. So you’re saying that I won’t make $51/hour online? But I already signed up and ordered 200 of the Nexus 5 phones!

          Crud.

  7. I don’t believe, I know mine is legit. I even let the seller deliver it for 1 day AirChina delivery. I can even put 2 sim cards.. I refuse to believe this article!

Sent from my Nexus 5 4GLTE

    1. so ur trying to say u have a n5 in ur hands???

      1. I think he is teasing you..

      2. I think it’s what we in England call ‘talking bollocks’.

      3. I have one too. Recently got the new update to 4.5 Lima Bean ;-P

    2. trollololol

    3. you best believe this is true.. how else would i gotten my Noxus 5 from china as well. go Noxus!!

  8. Okay Google, here’s your chance to prevent price gouging. Proper supply and ability to access that supply.

  9. I live in Ireland and if it wasn’t for people like this guy i wouldn’t be able to get my hands on a nexus phone for months possibly even up to a year after release.

As we know google play stores are region specific and it is very difficult to get around this to purchase devices. So ultimately i end up digging through eBay looking for the best possible price i can get. I have had to do this with the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and both new and old Nexus 7.

$600 = €450 and for me this is still cheaper than if i was to try to buy a Note3, S4 or most other high end phones off contract from a phone retailer.

And as for this being a scam, his seller history would suggest otherwise + we got PayPal protection!!!

  10. Everyone calm down. The roll out for the Nexus 5 is going to go smoothly. Just look at how well they handled the sales for I/O.

  11. if u look at the listing under item spec under mpn it actually say nexus416gblack. so i dont know if this guy is just actually trying to get away with selling a n4

  12. if u look at the listing under item specs under mpn it says
LGGoogleNexus416GBUnlockedBlack so i think this guy is trying to get away with selling a n4 and listing as a n5. but its crazy because he would get away with it because it says n4 in item specs!!!!!
and someone already bought one!!!. CRAZYY

  13. Firstly $650 is NOT REASONABLE. Secondly, i’d rather wait and buy directly from Google. I don’t care if i get it later than other people.

    1. But you have those who have no patience and prefer to over pay then to wait. Unfortunately there’s plenty of people out there that will take advantage of those who can’t wait.

      1. No one is taking advantage of anyone. The buyers are not stupid. To them prolly $650 is worth not checking google play every hour to see if phone has been released.

    2. If you actually read the listing it is mainly for people in regions where the N5 is not available so they can’t buy it from Google. Be pissed at Google for not having enough inventory not someone engaging in the free market.

  14. I have the 6 already, it’s all who you know….

    1. But I got the 7…

    2. I remember the 6. I had one of those. I skipped the 7 and got the new one…

    3. you guys are late to the party.. already have the 9 with 5gb ram 3.2ghz processor

  15. I would do what Dwight from the office does buy a bunch of nexus 5s so when they run out I can charge a hefty price.

  16. Now why would i buy from this douchebag?

  17. 650 dollars? He is crazy ! i’m pretty sure the 32 GB model will launch for less than that in the Play Store.

  18. I know this is a so called pre-order but just in general … let’s just somebody has it for real and wants to make a big profit, fine whatever. Show me pictures you took, not stock.

  19. Who is to say the phone will be launched in a few days and he owns a retail store that has has phones in stock ready to sell on launch day. I mean i know for a fact Gamestop gets new releases 3-7 days in advance. I know this because i had a legit copy of Black Ops days in advance. So who is to say this guy owns a retail store and Google shipped him phones a few days early so he is trying to rip people off when he already has them.

  20. Report item.

    Catagory: Listing Practices

    Reason: Fraudulent listing activites

Detailed Reason: You suspect that a listing is fradualent

Ebay has banned these types of listing going all the way back to the original iPhone, and that was an announced product.

“Apple iPhone Pre-Sales are prohibited. This highly-anticipated device will be in high demand after the US release on June 29th, 2007. Prior to the release of similar high-demand electronics, we saw a high number of well-intentioned sellers unable to meet their pre-sale obligations to buyers due to restricted supply, as well as an increase in fraudulent listings for these items. To prevent similar problems with the iPhone, eBay is prohibiting all pre-sales of this device.”

  21. The writer has iPhone on the head, he refers to the Nexus 5 as “Nexus 5s”

    1. it’s plural form of five nexus 5 dude

      1. On second look, I suppose your right.

  22. many people including me are tired of waiting for nexus 5, unless it is relesed or google comes with credible news about its release date, google might lose on the market share and consumer confidence.. something seems to be amiss and terribly wrong are they not releasing any news as they fear losing share price ?
