Google Wallet app can now be used with nearly any carrier on any Android phone

62

Google has announced a new Google Wallet update that should make a lot of people happy. For starters, you will now be able to send money to anyone who has an email address (and are older than 18 years of age, of course). Google’s also opening up the ability to send money through Gmail on desktop to anyone who sends money through the Google Wallet app, which is pretty darn sweet.

New loyalty programs have been added to Google Wallet, with Alaska Airlines, Belly, and Red Mango allowing you to add your loyalty cards to Google Wallet. You simply bring the digital card up on your phone when you want to scan it, and proceed just as if you had that old finicky plastic card. Furthermore, Google has announced the forthcoming addition of many new businesses:

  • Avis Car Rental
  • BJ’s Restaurants
  • Cosi
  • Hard Rock International
  • InterContinental Hotels Group
  • Marriott International
  • Raley’s
  • The Body Shop

There’s no set date for when we can see any of these, but they’re coming. And to cap off the loyalty rewards stuff, the app will now notify you when you’re nearby one of the places you’re a member (just in case you needed a reminder to spend even more money to get even more rewards).

Other things you can expect are full, easy access to all of the offers you’ve saved (whether you got them from within Google+, Google Maps, Google Search or what have you), the ability to see all your purchase activity (whether they were online purchases or completed at a store using NFC), and more.

Google has announced that the phone will be rolling out to “all” Android phones with Android 2.3 or higher. The Google Play Store might still be currently blocking many previously unsupported devices, but that should change as the Play Store changes propagate to everyone over the course of the week. Go ahead and give the newly-updated app a spin in the Google Play Store.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Verizon a no go.

    1. So sideload it. Installed on my GN on VZW just fine.

      1. how do you do that?

        1. You get the apk and install it.
You will just need to find a link to the file and enable unknown sources.

      2. Link to sideload? Thanks

      3. so the new version sideloaded on vgnex still does nfc? i hope so. and on cyanogenmod.

        1. I think it will. It said it was setting it up last I looked at it. I will try it tonight. It says I am ready to tap and pay.

    2. Reports are stating otherwise.

  2. That’s good. I use it all the time and my friends would like to too. Very good news indeed

  3. Verizon still blocking…bastards.

    1. The new app will be working on VZW soon. It just won’t support NFC payments.

      1. Source?

      2. Won’t support nfc payments, wtf is the point? Good thing I unattached from play store and kept my patched version and hoping that still works on Verizon.

  4. Can’t get it on my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 yet. Will check later in the week or just keeping using the one from XDA.

    1. Even when it gets working, the app will not allow tap to pay. That functionality will still only be supported by phones which currently allow it.

  5. Ha! and they said Google was killing this off.

  6. Can the title be amended to say it’s US only? It’s terribly misleading (and such a let down).

    1. Exactly! It’s not available to “ALL” phones. It’s only available to any phone in the USA. Stupid Google.

  7. Can’t be used on any phone that is NFC enabled. ATT and the Big V are still holding out on us.

    1. Has this been confirmed? If so, that’s a big bust for me ‘n my GS4.

    2. It’s going to be able to run on any US phone. It just won’t support NFC payment except on Sprint.

      1. T-Mo also supports it. No Verizon. No AT&T except Nexus devices bought unlocked from the Play Store.

        1. I just installed it on T-Mo GS4 and got a unsupported device or network message.

          1. It looks like only Nexus devices are supported on T-Mo. See the support like ViperGeek posted above.

    3. I hate them so much. I just moved to Cali and so many places allow you to use Google Wallet. Even a vending machine at a college has it. But NOPE. I can’t try it out and be cool..

    4. However if you have a rooted device you can head over to XDA and they have a way to get it up and running with working NFC on a few phones. Scroll about halfway down this page and you can get the instructions. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093870) I have had it running on my note2.

    5. I just installed from play store with my vzw gs4. No problems

  8. GS3 on AT&T still a no go.

  9. For all the people who can’t download it from Google Play, you have to sideload it onto your phone. Currently working on my Verizon Rezound.

  10. Still not supported on Nexus 7.

    1. RTFA! “The Google Play Store might still be currently blocking many previously unsupported devices, but that should change as the Play Store changes propagate to everyone over the course of the week. “

      1. Calm down… I just just letting others know that it’s not yet supported. Plus, the article only suggests that “all” phones will be updated. The Nexus 7 isn’t a phone but, the new features shouldn’t need NFC to work.

        1. NO. YOU calm down!!! This is serious bzness and you need to read before responding. UGH! It’s like working with children on this site /Sarcasm.

  11. Installed and working on my non rooted AT&T Galaxy S4.

  12. Is it still blocked if you’re rooted? I only have one device that is not rooted, and it’s 2.3 on VZW (I’ll check back at a later time to see if it is, but for right now it says incompatible with all my devices, including my WiFi tablet)

  13. Not supported on my T-Mobile GS4.

  14. Maybe change the title to say “very few carriers” instead of “nearly any”? It seems it is US only.

  15. I read the title and immediately thought that we can finally make use of Google Wallet as an NFC payment option. I should have known better.

  16. Alright, so i just side loaded and I’m on Verizon-have a GS3. So does that mean I’m still not able to use?

    1. does the app still tell you its running “not supported” ?

  17. not working on t mob htc one

  18. Google Play says its not compatible with my HTC ONE on T-Mobile.

  19. I’m on a Verizon gs4 running cm10.2. I just downloaded the app from the play store and was able to set it up, no problem. Finally! No more hacking my build.prop

  20. Does this work for Verizon also? I nearly bricked my GSIII screwing around with the build.prop a few weeks ago.

    1. Yes it is installed on mine.

  21. “Verizon”

  22. So like… Canada… when?

  23. My husband’s Google wallet account was hacked within days of him signing up. In a one month billing period (by the time we caught on) we had charges totaling over $3,000. I don’t feel that the app is safe or secured properly. I think I’ll stick with the old familiar pay pal.

    1. A negative post with no facts to back it up and no comment history to judge your reputation on; I can’t help but wonder if this is posted by some intern as instructed by a competitors marketing company.

      1. Sorry if I’ve only stumbled onto this board through my drippler app, hence no previous posts. But if my account on here is linked to my Gmail account (as it said it would be) you can see that I’m quite a real person and never in my life had I worked for any IT company (if that’s even what you call them). Simply trying to share the extremely negative experience with Google wallet. If this app is hackable, then people (and developers) should be aware. Trust me, it was not pleasant opening that credit card statement!

        1. Well glad to hear you are a real person and sorry to hear your husbands wallet was hacked. I’ve never heard of a hack method that can happen without someone having access to your phone and even then it requires some know how. If you’re sure his wallet was hacked then I’d suggest calling Google Wallet support toll-free at 855-492-5538 to at least report the issue.

          1. Thank you for the info. That was really helpful. The issue is being resolved through our bank right now, but we will be sure to contact the support number! Thanks :)

  24. Works and is USA only… It installed fine straight from the market destroying my modded changes to make it open in Canada, and now gives me the loving message – ” FU can’t use this in your country”.

Time to restore the old backup apk… Sigh…

Don’t bother updating unless you live in the states. Pointless.

  25. This item cannot be installed in your device’s country.

  26. Working on my T-Mobile gs3 but I do have my build prop edited to the sprint gs3 on cm10.1

  27. It is now installed on my Atrix HD on AT&T. I am very pleased with this development.

  28. Keeps force closing on my rooted s4.

  29. downloaded it last night on my Verizon galaxy nexus tried it today works well tap to pay even works! finally after 2 years of waiting. still switching to att or T-Mobile with a nexus 5 this fall though
