Nexus 4 price drops $100 in the Play Store! 8GB now $200, 16GB for $250 contract-free

Nexus 4 price drop

Egad! Straight out of left field, Google/LG just dropped a huge surprise on us. We’re still a few months away from the rumored “refresh” but Google’s not wasting anytime. They’ve dropped the price of the Nexus 4 in the Play Store by around 25% or more in:

Australia: $249
Canada: $199
Germany: €199
Spain: €199
Korea: ₩ 359
US: $199
UK: £159

That’s right, starting right now, you can now pick up a Nexus 4 8GB for $200, and the Nexus 4 16GB for $250 — that’s $100-off the original price. No contracts. No long term commitments. Just pure AOSP for the same price as many upgrades.

Keep in mind the Nexus 4 only works on AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks, and doesn’t have LTE functionality (unless you hack it). If you can live with that, then you know what to do. Link provided below.

  1. Holy wow. If I needed a GSM phone, I’d be all over that one. Damn good price.

Makes you wonder if a new Nexus (Nexus 5) is on the horizon?

    1. End of the year, me thinks.

      1. This is PERFECT!!! I already have one. Bought one for my son. When the Nexus 5 comes out I’ll retire my daughters vzw gnex that she uses without service, pass on my nexus 4 to her and buy a Nexus 5 for myself. =) $199 is a total score for my son right now. He wouldn’t have got his glitch nexus S upgraded for at least three more months otherwise.

    2. For reference, the Nexus 4 launched 11/13/2012

    3. Rumors say iPhone 5S and 5C will be announced in September. This is why the Nexus 4 price has dropped in anticipation of the new iPhones but also in anticipation of the next Nexus phone. The new iPhones may force Google to release the next Nexus phone earlier than November, so either September or October announcement? Sigh, i’m fighting off the urge to buy a Nexus 4…trying to wait for next Nexus phone.

      1. I’d say buy the Nexus 4 and if the Nexus 5 is something you’d like, buy it and hold the 4 on the back burner for “just in case” situations.

  2. Awesomeness!!!! Is this a sign of the imminent release of the Nexus 5? I think so!!!

    1. Considering that they released the 4 last Nov and the GalNex in Nov 11 and the S in Dec 10, I am guessing we are still at least a couple months away.

      1. Right, but they’ve got to clean out inventory.

  3. you gotta be kidding me! D: must have!!

  4. Dropped the price in less than 6 mths? That can’t be good.

    1. Technology moves fast. Google was nice enough to drop the price as the phone aged, unlike OEM’s like Apple who keep the same price right up until a newer model is released.

      1. I have a feeling they’re trying to flood the ecosystem for the purchase of or buy in to a gsm network. But nothing supports this thought, just a hunch that’s been rumored previously.

    2. More than 9 months, actually, but who’s counting?

    3. more like 10 months, if we’re rounding

    4. 6 months? Try 10.

  5. Still $350 (8GB) and $400 (16GB) in Australia :(

  6. Dam I wish I was on tmobile instead of Verizon

    1. I was planning on leaving Verizon for T-Mobile when my contract is up next summer but I might do it a lot sooner now.

      1. I did it 6 months ago and haven’t been happier. I was a little worried about leaving Verizon’s coverage, but haven’t regretted it once. Even while camping in the northern Minnesota woods I was at least on 2g.

        1. I had T-Mobile for a short period before I switched to Verizon and I’ve regretted making that switch ever since.

      2. Dumping att for tmobile was the best thing ive done, my bill went from 180 to 95 a month (no contract, 2.5gb data, unlimited talk and text and2 nnumbers) I do have tmobile version phones, depending on where u live you will need tmobiles version phones for the data to work decently.

        1. Why don’t you dump T-Mobile Post Paid and go to the walmart T-mobile Family plan. Same exact stuff for 35.99! It baffles me the people that still pay to be in a contract to get a phone at a reduced price!

          1. Hmmm, I’m gonna check into it next time I go to Walmart. Still I have 2 lines with 2.5GB of high speed data each line, unlimited talk and text for 95 after taxes (that’s around 40 per line before taxes) and no contract signed, I can cancel anytime. Att and Verizon really need to adjust their plans cause they are just KRAZZZYY expensive.

    2. Come to Big Magenta… *in creepy voice* All are welcome. All are welcome. lol

  7. People that bought the moto x probably feel pretty dumb right now

    1. Not really. Some people are more than content with their current carrier and don’t mind signing 2-year contracts (I plan on staying with AT&T for the rest of my life).

The Moto X ups the Nexus 4 in that it offers LTE, better battery life, always-on Google Now, an arguably better display, and can be customized. Other than that… yeah, it’s kinda like the Nexus 4 :P

      1. Do you work for Motorola? You sound like a commercial.

        1. Just pointing out the facts!

          1. What about some of the kernels that people are modifying to give better battery life ? I am running Matr1x kernel and I get 1-2 days of use with MY phone as I use it…

        2. theNEOone you dare question the hair!!????

      2. Long story short both phones are awesome, but the Moto X has LTE.

    2. I’ll feel dumb if the Moto X DE costs $600

I’m very tempted to buy the reduced Nexus 4 but was actually waiting on the Moto X Developer Edition price… hoping for $400/450…

$150/200 wouldn’t be such a bad additional cost for double memory, active google now, and the cool shape with a more durable case material… better camera(s)…

If the Moto X isn’t so affordable I’ll be waiting for the N5, or 4-2, whatever it’s going to be. Since I feel like these N4s will be gone soon)

      1. I doubt that the Moto X DE will cost $400/450. Motorola is not going to price the DE lower then than the regular Moto X…

        1. I know it’s a long shot, my hopes are just that they’ll use this device to grow their market share.
Plus, if the T-Mobile variant is going to be sold via the play store, then it’ll be a hard sell at $600 with the One, GS4, and N4 prices right next to it. They’ve gone out of their way to say the Moto X isn’t trying to out-spec (and out-cost) the competition so it would be awfully awkward if those phones with such “unnecessary” perks were available at the same price.

  8. Imminent release of the $400 dev edition Moto X This Friday….In my dreams, or am I on to something

    1. I doubt it, but I’ll definitely be crossing my fingers!

  9. Well … there’s our Nexus 5 confirmation!

    1. Wrong. Half Life 3 confirmed.

      1. Nexus 4 price drop on 8 / 27 / 13

        8 + 2 + 7 + 1 + 3 = 21

        2 + 1 = 3

Half Life 3 confirmed! You’re right!!!

        1. still don’t get it. They don’t have the white version? i bought my like in June 16 Gb with bumper but it looks like it really was a limited edition, i think the new one is about to be announced next month. I just hope they release 5.0 because 4.3 on my is having serious issues with wifi, i may change n go for GS3

        2. oh snap

          1. WTH?

      2. Wrong Left 4 Dead 3 confirmed!

        1. yay! we want l4d3!!

  10. WTF!? At first, I thought you were saying the 8GB version was $100. I was like, “Let me just buy one for the hail of it.”

  11. Time to hit up Craigslist and haggle people selling used Nexus 4 16GB’s to $200! :D

    1. I dunno.. I wouldn’t buy a used phone that has a year worth of wear and tear on the battery and probably a little beat up, when I could buy a brand new one for $50 more… I mean, you’ll pay more than $50 to replace the battery that is most likely already starting to go…

    2. Most are still listed near $300. They ought to be dropping to near $100, not $200. This should bring down prices on all all used phones.

It would need to be at least down to $140 or so to make it worth the risk of no warranty.

  12. darn. i just got the samsung chromebook and have my eyes set on the asus memo pad smart. how am i supposed to get this awesome phone now too?!

  13. Ah I am so tempted…

  14. I’m almost mad. That’s gonna hurt the resale value on mine! Oh well… I’ll still be buying a Nexus 5.

    1. I thought the exact same thing lol

    2. Just wait until they aren’t available on the play store anymore and the price will go back up. Gnex was costing over 200 on ebay not to long ago. I am a bit worried about mine to, looks like it may go to the wife instead if the price doesn’t climb back up.

  15. did you mean korean ₩359,000? ₩359 is like 32 cents.

    1. 32 cents. It’s 32 cents in Korea. I’m buying a hundred.

      1. Is this really true?! If so, how could I order from the Korean Google play store at this price?

        1. -_-

  16. Im broke until fri so I just died a little inside :(

  17. I bought a Nexus 4 on 8/15 and received it on 8/22. I just called Google a few minutes ago and asked them about the price drop. They said I was in the payment protection window and would refund me the difference. Thank you Google!

  18. Nexus 5 will come on November 5th – celebrating Android’s 5th birthday and of course, it will come out on Android 5.0 KLP =]

    1. AND, most importantly, it’s my birthday. :P

    2. I so hope that this is true.

  19. If i order nexus for uk for 159 phounds will it work on networks in Serbia !? We do not have t mobile so is it unlocked !?

    1. Should work anywhere in the world except for some of the Asian countries.

    2. It’s an unlocked phone, check the Serbia network and the radio specs on the Nexus 4.

    3. I don’t think there is a single country that doesn’t have a gsm network, except maybe North Korea. I was just in Armenia for a month and had a wonderful experience using a company I’m almost positive is in Serbia: MTS. The great thing about this phone and my galaxy nexus i9250 is that they are gsm world phones and use every band, the only you need to do besides is configure the mobile network settings for the internet, and you’re good to go.

  20. No 4G LTE on this one or I would buy it.

  21. like Frank answered I didn’t know that a stay at home mom able to get paid $6109 in one month on the computer. view it www.KEP2.com

  22. I am so tempted to pick this one up to use it as my vacation phone, but I don’t think I can cope with 16GB of storage. I’m having a hard time managing my G-Nexus and it has 32GB. -_-

    1. When you’re on *vacation* bring a proper camera and you’ll be fine :)
When I go overseas I just get a prepay dumbphone.

      1. I don’t always carry my camera with me when I’m on vacation. I’m not thinking of getting this phone for its *spectacular* camera. I used to have a razr (v3) that I would take with me but, it kicked the bucket and I’m thinking on using a not so expensive smartphone now.

    2. When I go on vacation I try to do other things besides play with 32GB of storage on my phone.

      1. Lets see how many movies, how much music and apps you can install on it for days that there isn’t much to do. When I go on vacation I usually go for more the 2 weeks at a time.

  23. Just bought one. Had to get one to hold me over until the Note III. My Galaxy Nexus isn’t cutting it anymore haha.

  24. Hopefully, the Nexus 5 will have a 32GB option.

  25. I finally made the decision to wait for the Nexus 5 and was content with it. Then this doozie comes out. Arggg….What to do? Why must you mess with my emotions Google?!?!?!

    1. In the same boat……my current phone sucks a$$!

      1. We seriously need to pull a trigger on a phone… everyday something better comes out.

        1. I can’t believe I’m admitting this in public, but my Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II is still working, it’s slow, bloated with T-Mo crap, sounds like poo, but I’m going to grit my tooth and holdout for the next Nexus…at least until some specs have been solidified. Must be strong……aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh

    2. With a few months left why not just wait? If it was 6 months or longer then that would be a different story.

  26. in Brazil the price does not go down, quite the contrary increases every day more, thanks to the taxes which is constantly increasing. politicians unclean
    http://www.jornaltecinfo.com

    1. It’s actually because of the dollar price that has jumped from 2,10 to almost 2,50 this last few weeks… Still, Brazil has the higher prices in the world for so many things like cars, electronics, toys, games and so on. People in Brazil are just now starting to learn the real value of things (financially speaking) but that’s been done in super slow motion. Sad.

      1. but not quite the overvaluation of the dollar today is more taxes even that is too high for electronics and games as you mentioned

  27. Amazing phone…worth every penny now and at it’s original price. I was rocking my root’d Galaxy Nexus and was perfectly happy with it and then WAM I fall in a swimming pool drunk and ruin my phone so I was forced to buy a new phone sooner than I really wanted to. Well I didn’t have $600 at the time so I ended up buying the T-Mobile version Nexus 4 and instantly unlocked/root’d it to make it the GE Nexus 4 and I could not be happier. The Nexus 4 is still one of the best phones on the market even without all the bells and whistles of the GS4 and either phone I got my plan was just to root it and flash a custom ROM anyway so the Nexus 4 is exactly the same as the GS4 or HTC One.

  28. I wish it was that price a few months ago so i wouldnt have bought an LGL9. phone was great then they did an update and now WiFi doesnt register.

  29. What is Google doing? This is selling them at close to cost. T-Mobile needs to capitalize on this.

  30. Let’s hope this is because in a couple months there will be a new Nexus 4 and Key Lime Pie announced.

  31. why da hell would anyone want an 8gb phone… smh

  32. In Korea it should be ₩359,000. ₩359 is like 40 cents USD.

  33. Now the dilemma is, do I buy one for the wife now that they are an even more unbelievable price, (and her Verizon contract is up) or do I wait for the next Nexus to come out, and give my Nexus 4 to the wife…

  34. I use mine on T-Mobile prepaid $60 unlimited with 2.5GB data. LTE works great as well, though speeds have been faster on regular HSPA+ in Manhattan NY. http://www.allprepaidplans.com for prepaid providers and plans.

  35. Is this mobile unlocked or not?. If I buy it from US, can I use it with India networks??
