Verizon has refreshed its rugged hero, the Casio G’zOne Commando, with some 4G LTE radios, some fresh good looks, and updated internals. It isn’t a huge departure from the original, but its 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4-inch WVGA display, an 8 megapixel camera on the rear with a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, 16GB of internal storage and more do enough to make this feel like a solid sequel.

It’s actually quite nice for a rugged phone, a class of devices which are typically treated like ugly ducklings when it comes to specs. The device is launching this Thursday, June 27th for $99, but that price will only come after a $50 mail-in rebate and the obligatory two-year contract extension. Any of you outdoorsy types looking forward to adding this gadget to your bag?

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. This reminds of a Simpsons episode where Homer takes Bart to show him “manly workers” and runs across construction workers who weren’t so “manly”

On the 27th there will be lines outside VZ’s doors with people waiting for this phone. ROFL
Glad they are dust proof, they will need it for being on the shelf so long and gathering dust.

    1. There won’t be lines, but you’d be surprised how popular these things are.

    2. Yeah i actually no plenty of construction workers looking for that upgrade from the original. They are more popular than you’d expect.

  3. G’zOne… sounds tasty. Like a calzone, or somethin’

  4. as bad as these rugged phones usually are, we should all admit we all just really wish our shiny phones were indestructible. Nobody has ever said you know this phone is too big and heavy, i think if they make it out of tissue paper and plastic wrap for a screen that would fix it and make it way better being 1 mm smaller and and 5 grams lighter
