The Disney Channel Is Feeding Your Kids Anti-Open Source Propaganda [Video]

34

No, this isn’t about Miley Cyrus wearing sexually suggestive clothing while struttin’ herself on a stripper pole, this is worse. Far worse. If you thought the only thing you had to worry about on the Disney Channel were tween stars behaving badly, you ain’t seen nothing yet. In this episode of Disney’s “Shake It Up,” the resident nerd of the bunch is caught giving some helpful computer advice: “Never use open source software.”

That’s right, now every kid in the country will have it implemented in their minds that “open source” is some kind of unsecure four-letter word and will shun Android forever. Smells like fishy, Apple sauced propaganda to me. Watch the below video with me in total outrage. (Rabble, rabble, rabble!)

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Any kid who watches the Disney channel is doomed anyways.

    1. I agree, however Disney XD isn’t so bad…(Tron Uprising, Avengers…etc)

      1. My little cousin makes me watch Shake It Up with her and I have to admit…. it’s kinda grown on me :x

        1. You are a shame to all at Phandroid, Chris.

          1. He didn’t say anything about My Little Pony so there’s still hope

          2. Rainbow Dash is my favorite O_o

          3. I learned there’s a name for guys like me who like MLP:FIM, they’re called Bronies. And oddly, I am okay with that title.

          4. BRONIES!!!

            *CHEST BUMP*

            *shot guns beer*

          5. He wears his pedobear shirt while watching, so it’s all good!

  2. NIckelodeon >Disney #JusSayin

  3. Just some writers looking to insert some Tech Sp33k, I don’t see this as an issue.Of greater concern; is a kid saying “absolutily tootily” funny?

    1. pretty much my opinion… love how internet always has a knack for coo coo or coco puffs.

    2. To little kids, yes. Unfortunately my 22 year old sibling actually enjoys this show…

  4. “Smells like fishy, Apple sauced propaganda to me. Watch the below video with me in total outrage”

Brought to you by the same Hollywood crowd that pushed for SOPA

  5. Well, steve jobs did sit on the board of directors at at disney…apple and disney are very much intertwined

    1. Yep, remember the “ta-daaa” sound when Wall-E had his batteries recharged? Not a coincidence. But far more acceptable than teaching kids that open source is dangerous.

  6. well…the comment overall doesn’t make a whole lotta sense “using open source software to save time” … my 10 y/o only knows how to unlock and launch apps on my phone…doesn’t care much about the OS itself as long as she can fling birds and drive hoverboats

  7. Yep, the nerd has clearly been infected with applitoxin – he’s even using a disguised macbook air or something… Seriously, the scene was planned in detail and with a clear message in mind; open source is dangerous. So what is the least open source option out there? Apple of course. Impossible that this was not meant to promote Apple… No more Disney for my kid (not that we have cable anyway).

  8. The rookie mistake was not noticing the virus in the code. HELLO, open source for a reason!

  9. I emailed Richard Stallman about this; he thinks it’s more likely to be retardation on the part of the writers rather than actual propaganda.

    1. Hey, hey, hey.. we aren’t talking about desktop OS’s. This is an Android blog, bruh. Get out of here with that Apple nonsense O_O

      Oh yeah.. ‘MERICA!

      1. I have no concept of America :(

        1. Read, you could learn alot. :)

  10. My 8-year-old niece watches this show. She DVR’d this episode and was so excited to show me because earlier in the episode, the same “resident nerd” shows off his Android (humanoid robot, not mobile device) named Andy. Can you tell that I’ve thoroughly propagandized my family?

I have to say, the open source dig is rather sad, considering Disney-Pixar has open-sourced a major piece of digital-animation software (can’t remember the name off the top of my head.)

  11. My kids watch Disney all the time. That being said, they all know Android>Apple. I’m a good parent!

    1. No way I’m buying my kids Disney subscription. I’ve decided this before, and this occasion only strengthens my position.

  12. They just had a disney cartoon remix of “hello” and all the phones in it were android that were in the backround…so its not all bad

  13. “Open source” does not equal “safe”. Equally true: “open source” does not equal “unsafe”. The video crosses the line by implying that open source software is inherently unsafe. Use of any software requires trusting the source (publisher), but only open source allows verification that said trust is warranted. To quote Ronald Reagan: “Trust, but verify”. Closed source software does not allow for such verification.

  14. This is why my kids will only watch Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

  15. at least the lil retard admits the use of open source software does save time;)

  16. i wasnt aware that nerds actually paid for software. i was under the impression it was for business and the computer illiterate. is this a ploy to condition youth support corporate america? or is this non tech savvy writers pulling information out of their asses(like the way the gop does fact checking)? either way our country is getting dumber. people forget history, walter disney was a nazi supporter, but that was all forgiven because he was rich. AOSP FOREVER!!!

  17. This would be SWEET

  18. If you let your kids watch that show at all, this little open source thing is the least of your worries.
