Real-time New York City subway service updates now available in Google Maps

8

Google has updated Google Maps to include real-time service updates for New York City subway users. When clicking on one of 468 subway stations Google Maps will show any alert that may be causing a delay or stoppage in service.

Google will also alter directions based on service interruptions to ensure you’re not being thrown from the pan into the fire should you happen to encounter more than one service interruption on your route.

It is a pretty big feat for Google, but they finally got it done for the busiest city in the nation and one of the biggest in the world. Grab Google Maps from the Google Play Store. [via Google]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. tram times for the Netherlands would be welcome…..doesn’t even have to show delays or anything….just so that google maps acknowledges that trams exist and doesn’t have me walk all the way to train stations when their is a perfectly good tram going there!

The data is even freely available at 9292ov.nl

    1. Are you sure it is freely available for other companies too? In Austria Google Maps was able to plot public transport routes in 2008 for the UEFA championship but then the public transport company stopped permitting google access to that data, although the information is freely available on their website, and pushed their own app

      1. Probably has something to do with losing ad revenues or something.
But it’s PUBLIC transport…..how can the data about when PUBLIC transportation is set to arrive not be shareable?
It’s stupid that the data is not publicly available online when it is publicly available offline (viewing the timetables and maps at the stops)

  2. This is great… living in NYC, very excited about this.

    1. Same here

  3. NYC Subway times on Google are incredible. When I was in NYC, Google Now would buzz in the morning to tell me “Leave for work by 8:43 to be on time”, showing me the exact schedule on the 4 train that would get me there. I never told Google Now where I lived, where I worked, or that I took the 4 train to work, it just learned it all by tracking my location. Amazing.

    1. Kind of like an over obsessive girlfriend. You say its helpful now…just wait until Google shows up at your work yelling and screaming

“where were you when I tried to call at 12:39pm today?”

      and your answer of

“I was having lunch and left my phone at the office.” wont be sufficient for your disobedience!
