Must Have Nexus 7 App: “Camera Launcher” Adds Stock Camera To Nexus 7’s

18

I know for many of you, shiny new Nexus 7’s are currently on route to your home. Upon powering up the device and diving into all the wonderful things Jelly Bean and the tablet have to offer, you may be surprised to find a complete lack of camera application installed on the device out of the box. Weird? Totes.

Thankfully, a developer by the name of MoDaCo (sometimes known as Paul O’brien) has made available the stock Android 4.1 camera app for front-facing-camera shutter bugs, and is currently available in the Play Store. Sure you could always use Instagram or the Facebook app for all your self-portrait needs, but from what I’ve read in our comments, more than a few of you want would prefer to stay away far away from installing those apps. More power to you.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. It works perfectly. BTW, my day ends with a funny face. :D

  2. Not sure if quickpic works for the front facing camera as my phone does not have one. quixkpic is the only camera app on my phone and comes included with the rom I have so it may be another option for the nexus 7. The program also has many much needed features like anti shake that my phone does not natively support

  3. Google should make a photobooth equivalent on the nexus 7, they have those facial “FUNNY FACES” features on GNEX….Can’t wait to get mines for my b-day

    ARGH The Horror!

  8. If you take the back off the tablet, right in the middle near the top there’s a spot for a rear facing camera. Not sure if Asus was planning one originally and dropped it for pricing concerns, or if it’s for future upgrades.

  9. You don’t need this one extra app if you are already using a social sharing app like Google+. You can take pics just fine by launching G+ and shooting a pic from within that.

  10. Now if only the Shop Saavy team would update their app to work on the N7.

  11. Actually, Facebook doesn’t yet recognize the Nexus 7 camera. Says it couldn’t locate the device, and directs the user to the gallery app.
