Sharp’s Android-Based Evangelion Phone Pictured – SH-06D NERV Is A Fanboy’s Dream Come True

17

Growing up, I’ve oft fantasized in the dark confines of my parent’s basement of having a living, breathing Rei Ayanami of my very own. Well, this new phone from Sharp may have topped even that. The SH-06D is probably one of the most unique Android devices ever to step foot out of Japan. Themed to accurately reflect the design and stylings of the popular Japanese anime, Evangelion, the device features a busy UI that would make a WP7 fanboy weep.

The whole device screams of the cartoon series with a fine attention to detail (notice that even the physical buttons below have been themed). At a glance, it would be nearly impossible to identify the SH-06D as an Android device. Just look at those custom icons, widgets and wallpaper. This is definitely not just your regular “R2-D2 job.” Specs remain largely the same as the Sharp Aquos SH-06D3D, with a 4.5-inch, 720p, 3D “MAGI” display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, extendable antenna and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The device also comes pre-installed with 3D versions of the Evangelion movies.

This is Japan-only and only a limited number of these will go on sale sometime in June 2012. I think it’s safe to say you’ll see the rebirth of Lilith before this device ever sees an over-the-air update to Ice Cream Sandwich. Am I crazy in thinking this phone is gorgeous?

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  3. You Can (Not) Have This Phone

  4. I like the phone, but I liked it better in the previous story render that had it all black. Also don’t care for hardware buttons and Gingerbread. Oh well. Cool device none the less.

  5. That looks awesome. Although it seems like the phone would stop looking good if you changed the wallpaper, and that’s a problem.

    1. Well, every element of the phone is made as a part of whole Evangelion customization, so I don’t really see the point of changing the wallpaper. I love it just as it is <3

  6. Chris, you know about Evangelion? O.o

You have just leveled up in my cool books…

    And +1 for Rei <3

  7. This is freaking awesome, just epic! Would love one!
Also, Gingerbread doesn’t matter, it’s not about being up to date anyway :D

  8. O M G! That is soooooo sweet! I think I just wet myself!

Seriously, that’s one of the most awesome customization jobs I’ve ever seen. And the fact that it’s Evangelion only makes it better!

  9. /drools

Too bad the look will be ruined the moment you open your app drawer after installing anything. XD

  10. can someone please port that UI to my phone

  11. Awesome phone. Love Evangelion, love this phone. Too bad it’s Japan only and besides that, too bad it has 512MB RAM. 768MB or 1GB would me more befitting of its specs.

  12. I wonder will this show up in the next Evangelion movie?
    Gendou’s phone? lol

Hope someone will post a video of the UI working when the phone goes on sale there.

  13. Drool… Would love a system dump of this phone.

  14. Wow that… actually looks cool!

  16. Lol someone go release the Phone UI and release the UI on another android Phone or Apple device
