Google Preparing Fix for Gmail Flickering Bug

28

It seems a nasty bug has creeped up on a g0od chunk of Gmail for Android users. Upon opening the application, it would flicker on and off, making it hard to read and write email. Google seems to have put this high on their priority list, and understandably so. A Google employee, going by the forum name “BrittanyBee,” had this to say:

Beginning this morning, we’ve received reports of a bug causing some Gmail users on Android to experience screen flickering when they open the app.  We are in the process of fixing it and the issue should be resolved shortly.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

I personally haven’t been experiencing this issue. It seems to be affecting a wide range of phones, including the DROID RAZR MAXX, the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note. Oddly enough, even the Motorola XOOM has been reported by at least one user. Let’s hope this doesn’t take too long. [Google 1|2, thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Ah, so it isn’t just me then, haha… Thought something was screwy w/ my EVO 3D, and decided to take this opportunity to do the HTC bootloader unlock process, which I’ve been putting off for a long time due to the fact that it brings the phone back to factory reset. Oh well, at least this phone is finally rooted :)

    1. weird I haven’t had any issues with my 3D? I wonder if it’s just hit and miss on who (or what phone) is affected?

      1.  I imagine it was probably something random… it was some pretty bizarre behavior because gmail through my primary Gmail account (associated with my device) was flickering so much that it was completely unusable, but switching to a different gmail account worked fine.

  2. It’s funny that you report “Oddly enough, even the Motorola XOOM has been reported…”, as my SGSII (Epic 4G Touch) has not experienced this, but my Xoom has the bug in a horrible way.  The flickering is enough to cause epileptic seizures.Additionally, I’ve been having issues the past 2 days with games crashing (only games) on my Xoom, and I’m wondering if this is somehow related.  I’m wondering if the Gmail bug is causing a shortage of RAM, so when games get fired up, it causes a RAM shortage, and thus crashing the game.  When I close out Gmail I no longer have the crashing occurring.  The timing of the crashing lines up with the Gmail issue, so I’m thinking it could be related.

  3. Galaxy Nexus (Verizon): No issues
    Motorola XOOM (Verizon): No issues

Running the latest version of GMail on both.  [shrug]  Guess I’m one of the lucky ones…

  4. I can’t understand why they can’t fix some of these other minor detail stuff like hi-resolution contact photos.  It’s pretty ridiculous how long they have let that go.

I advise people to star this issue to give it more attention:

    1.  The real issue that is related to this post is here:

Star it if you’d like to follow it or give it higher priority.

    Have the same problem.
First I thought it was my fault but it seems to like Google is the troublemaker.

  6. No issues here with my Galaxy Note (ICS Midnote Rom)

  7. omg that is so relevant!

  8. I’m seeing this as well on my TMO SGS2. It has been happening since last night. I’ve tried everything to fix it, but it appears to be an issue with the Gmail servers or sync servers.

  9. I’ve had this issue on my Razr ever since I got my RAZR on release day.  I recently moved to a RAZR MAXX about a week ago and have the same issue.  Don’t see it on my Xoom.

If I select an email to read or go to compose an email, the flickering would go away.  I always thought is was just a quirk with screen resolution and type of screen being incompatible with the current version of the Gmail app.

  10. Looks like Mr. l33tsp34k is back. “creeped up on a g0od chunk”, Quentyn? *smirks*

  11. Hmm, never had this issue myself.

  12. no problems here on my OG EVO.

  13. Still flickering on my sii, had to download another app to check email

  14. Nothing on my TF-101, G’Nex, or Bionic.. *shrugs*

  15. YouTube has been flickering on my Asus Transformer with 4.0.3.

  16. I started noticing it on my Droid Charge last night, but nobody at Verizon or Google had heard of the issue and suggested doing a factory reset. Glad I didn’t do that yet.

  17. reporting flickering problem on my Motorola XOOM WiFi (3.2) but no problems on Motorola Defy (2.2.2)

  18. I’ve stopped using the Gmail app.  Not because of this problem, but because it doesn’t auto-update anymore!  They need to fix that too!

    1. my alternate phone is the htc vivid and the ics update turns gmail into one of the best apps on the phone…  give it another go when you update!

    2. hard reset fixed this on my OG EVO.  the problem arose after a major OS update.  all fixed now after hard reset and manual resync.

  19. It does it all the time on my Iconia A100 with ICS.

  20. It was doing it on my Evo 3D. I force stopped it and switched to the HTC mail app. It was so bad that I couldn’t do anything on the app. It would also reopen after I hit the home button. Unbelievably annoying.

  21. This issue started with me Thursday night on my unrooted Droid Incredible. It fixed itself this morning.

  22. my atrix 4g was affected as well but a hard reset fixed the problem for now.
