DotEmu Bringing Another World To The Android Market On March 16th

8

It was a few weeks ago we told you guys that the 1991 classic, Another World (Out of This World in the US) would be getting a remake for Android devices and today, the developer, DotEmu, has finally revealed a launch date for the cult classic platformer. Another World 20th Anniversary Edition will be making its way into the Android Market on March 16th and those that have played the title, it no doubt, holds a special place in your heart.

Thankfully, this isn’t some stale rehash of the original, with DotEmu bringing new HD visuals and Bluetooth support for peripherals like Zeemote. Here’s what you can look forward to in the 20tht Anniversary Edition for Android:

  • The ability to switch between Original/HD graphics by using 2 fingers at any time
  • New intuitive touch-based controls or classic D-pad.
  • 3 difficulty modes: Normal, Hard and Hardcore.
  • 100% remastered sounds and effects.
  • OpenFeint support with more than 10 achievements
  • Compatible with Zeemote joystick, connected via Bluetooth.
  • Game available in 5 languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish).

You can jump on the official Another World Facebook page and let the world know exactly what old-school gaming was really about. Just watching old gameplay videos is bringing back these strange feelings from my prepubescent childhood. You guys hyped?

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. This was one of those games where you had to memorize everything because taking a single incorrect action, or committing the sin of not being precognitive and thus not taking some specific action before being prompted, would kill you on half the screens. And if I remember right you could take actions in earlier levels that would screw you out of being able to finish the game later, like with your gun’s finite battery life.  That is not good game design and I hope they are fixing it before release.

That is not good game design and I hope they are fixing it before release.

Are you kidding me?  That was fantastic game design and all part of the fun and allure of Another World (I knew it as Out of this World on the Sega Genesis).  I don’t understand why games have to be so easy and spoon feed the players these days.

      1. No. Good game design is something like Dark Souls: very challenging but utterly fair. It doesn’t require you to memorize the entire game or predict things before they happen without any kind of cue that you should be expecting something to happen. Bad game design is like Out of this World, which expects you to read the programmer’s mind.

  2. I can think of about 50 other 3DO games I’d rather see ported to Android…and they wouldn’t need all that jazzing up.
    Alone in the Dark 1
    Jurassic Park
    Off World Interceptor
    Theme Park
    Shockwave 1,2
    Gex
    The Horde
    Immercenary
    D
    Cyberia
    Pebble Beach Golf
The greatest game of all time: Star Control II…

    1. DUDE! :)   The greatest game of all time has been available in the Android market for over a year now.  Look up Ur-Quan Masters.

And this is Android, we have access DOSBOX, MAME, and every freaking emulator that I know of. I have the ones I like on my Asus Transformer and they all run without a hitch, so put 2 and 2 together and you’ll be able to check off your list.

And back to DotEmu. They ticked me off with their R-Type port.  I bought it and was annoyed that there’s absolutely no way to map physical buttons.   So thankfully something mentioned above has resolved this issues and now I can play R-Type with my keyboard or any of my USB gamepads.

  3. Meh. I’ve been playing Out of this World (the English version of Another World) and Flashback via SNESoid emulator since last year. Although, if the price is right, and the software isn’t bigger than my Another World Rom, I might decide to pick it up.

Bring us Heart of the Alien (the sequel to Another World) and then we’ll talk. I so want a SegaCD emu!

  4. O man I still have my old 3do would love to see battle sport or return fire and definitely star control II

  5. Return Fire was my favorite 3DO game. Someone I’d definitely buy an android port
