Samsung Epic 4G Touch leaked official Android 4.0 ROM now working

10

Samsung has not been the best at updating Sprint devices, but things are turning around this year. Samsung is currently working hard at updating the Epic 4G Touch to Android 4.0. An official ROM was leaked yesterday, but it had problems with booting, past the kernel screen.

As expected, we are not going to conform and let things be. Developer Shabbypenguin messed around with the coding and managed to make the ROM work. This ROM is version FB09 [ 4.0.3], and it comes pre-rooted, so no need to move anything else around.

It is also important to note that this is not a pre-release version, so it is not perfect. WiFi, 3G and 4G are working, but there seem to be issues with MMS and the keyboard constantly force closing. You might or might now want to use this as a daily driver, but it is cool to get an idea of what Samsung’s official ICS update will be like.

For details, check out Shabbypenguin’s post. He also provided some cool videos with ste-by-step guides for installing the ROM, as well as a brief review. As always, be careful, do your research, and if something happens to your phone, no one else takes responsibility, but the owner.

Is anyone trying this one? If so, let us know how you like it!

  1. That is some melted ICS. Touchwiz looks nasty, especially with ICS. I like Sense with ICS way better than this

  2. I’m no developer so this may be a stupid question, but I’m curious if these official builds strip out non-useful code/drivers/etc like gsm modem support? Could devs use this or at least the kernel to get ics with working capacitive buttons and in-call audio on other carrier branded gs2’s? I imagine we’d still have to wait for source but just thought I’d ask those that know more than I. :-)

    1. The question is can you take the camera drivers and make them work on all of the other samsung devices ics roms like galaxy tab and such, mabye the cyanogen team can finish cm9 on it with stuff like this

  3. Several typos and needless commas.

    1. fragment

  4. no ics folders? :O if sprint got a hold of this already (seeing that thier apps are already on it) i don’t see Samsung changing that. seems like samsung is just playing get ics out fast instead of doing it right, im glad i got an evo 3d. cause ics builds of sense going around look sick. ill actually dump go launcher to go back to sense hehe

  5. Blahhhh. Just no…no…NO. I am so glad ics launchers exist (nova)

  6. Hahahah Samsung = fail

  7. You could use the Sprint ID app and switch to the “Clean” theme, which gives you a stock home screen.  I’m really curious to see whether this works on the leaked build and provides you with the missing home screen functionality that he was complaining about.

I like many things about TouchWiz on my phone currently, but I’m not sure how I feel about this new one.

  8. Thanks for the video, But I`ll wait for  Sprint and Samsung update… I love SGS2 so far..
