The Coolest Thing I Saw At CES 2012: Samsung’s Transparent Smart Window [Video]

39

Alright, so CES 2012 has come and gone but there was one thing I never got a chance to show you guys. Besides the boat load of Android rockin’ handsets and tablets I did manage to get my grubby little hands on one more “device” and that came in the form of Samsung’s Smart Window.

Easily the coolest tech I got to play with at CES this year, Samsung’s Smart Window could be considered the future. Well, that — or completely useless, depending on how you look at it. And even though it wasn’t directly Android related, it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to see how a simple swap of the OS could bring Android out of the world of boring old opaque screens and into the wonderful new frontier of transparent displays.

Check out my hands-on video below. Oh, and don’t mind the “no touch” sign below the display. Apparently it was more of a loose suggestion…

So, what did you guys think? Do transparent displays fall into the same gimmicky category as 3D displays? Or could a transparent Android tablet/smartphone prove itself truly useful in the distant future? You know — while skating around on your hoverboard.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

    PATENT THIS SHIT APPLE

    1. Thank you for giving Apple the idea.  But I’m sure they already thought of it before you did.  I’m sure Apple is busy filing a patent on this as we speak.

The US Patent system is broken. Beyond repair. Especially now that it was changed to a First To File system instead of a First To Invent system.

  18. AMAZING!!!!!

  19. now I just need dragon go for voice and kinect for gesture control, and I’ll have a nice window:)

  20. I took so much video of this at CES and played with it for about 20 min until the Samsung rep kicked me off. I couldn’t pull myself away from it.

  21. Pretty cool! I’m not creative enough to think of all the applications, but I know that someone somewhere will come up with some mind blowing technology with this. This is the stuff that our kids will say, “what do you mean it’s JUST a window?”

I once saw a commercial or something about future cars with interactive windows. Kids could play games on the passenger windows. That’s pretty cool stuff.

This is the future – for sure.

  22. I want this window! ahihihi

  23. Wanting one for the kitchen window.   Store recipes, play music!!   SICK!

  24. I want to see this used in cars more than anything else. The shade function could be used as a visor on the windshield that follows your movements or to black out a panoramic sunroof. Plus a few layers of glass will insulate better than steel and be better for the environment. Using it as a customizable HID dashboard display would be great, maybe a reality augmenting gps function to point out your turns on your windshield. Or try replacing the whole dash with a glass panel that the driver and passenger can interact with. The possibilities for transparent displays are endless!

  25. So the thing that caught my attention was the blinds…can anyone say “blinds of the future”? My only problem with that is what happens if power gets cut? Do the blinds then go away?

  26. Fair enough, there is also this…goo.gl/yf3nq

  27. Haha, i think this is so awesome, i was checking earlier and it might actually be true. Just take a look…shrt.st/2cdw
