Happy Holidroid Contest: Photo Challenge

180

If you’re unsure what this whole “Holidroid Contest” thing is all about, be prepared to get excited. From November 24th through December 25th, Phandroid is giving away a Kindle Fire every single day along with other great prizes like the Galaxy Nexus Galaxy Tabs, JAMBOX, SmarTouch Gloves, Android Phones, Android T-Shirts, Seidio Vouchers and more. Read our announcement post for details.

Yesterday’s Winner

The winner of yesterday’s contest was AndroidForums.com user Vithi, who was tasked with finding the secret image and being the first person to correctly post their entry. Congratulations to them and all the awesome stuff we’ve won! We’ve got 10 days left in this thing so there are still plenty of chances to win. Let’s see what’s up for grabs today:

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire could be this holiday’s hottest product: at only $199 it’s not only one of the most  affordable Android tablets, it’s also one of the best. That’s a killer combination. With a beautiful UI, great battery life, carefully curated apps/games, and an amazing array of media options thanks to Amazon’s Digital Content Ecosystem… the Kindle Fire is a sure win. Good luck winning one in our contest, but at only $199 it’s probably worth buying one just in case!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Everyone seems to be craving Samsung Android devices these days, and for good reason. Samsung makes some of the best hardware out there, coupled with great software integration, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great examples of Samsung’s industry leading products. This device was sponsored directly by Samsung, thanking our readers and forum members for their excitement, interest, and support over the past year. With an 10.1-inch screen, 1GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM, MicroSD slot, camera that records in 720p HD, and screen that displays in HD, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a high end alternative to the Kindle Fire… and you can win BOTH in our contest!

Isotoner SmarTouch Gloves

Every single holiday season these SmarTouch smartphone gloves are consistently one of my favorite gift giving items. They eloquently solve one of the most fundamental problems a tech lover faces: using your device in cold weather. Wearing gloves usually prevents your touchscreen from working: take your phone out, take your glove off, use your phone, hand gets gold, shove phone in pocket, rush to get glove on. NO MORE! Isotoner’s SmarTouch gloves, designed in my colors and sizes for both men and women, has technology that passes the electrons your body gives off, through the gloves, onto the capacitive screen and allowing it to work. VOILA! Seriously. It works. Trust me. Try it… and you’ll love them forever.

Seidio $30 Voucher

With so much smartphone use comes battery drain. Thankfully, Seidio makes some awesome extended batteries that fit many smartphones, allowing you to get longer battery life with the same device. No more toting around a charger everywhere you go: just snag a Seidio and call it a day! Seidio also makes cases, holsters, and other great accessories for your smartphones.Check them all out here.

Andy Robot T-Shirt

True Android enthusiasts and tech lovers enjoy expressing their Android attitude and there is no better way to do so then with an Android Robot T-Shirt from the brilliant folks at iSteamAndy. They’ve created a series of artistic, creative Android Robot themed T-shirts with fun, rich imagery. They sell like hotcakes and have limited production runs so get each design while you still can. Some of their top designs (and ones we’re giving away) include: Dark Night AndyiSteam Andy,Flying AndyExploded AndyAndy Verus, and Unstoppable Andy. Check out

ZeeMote Bluetooth Game Controller

The Zeemote Bluetooth Game Controller compacts things into one comfortable, ergonomically sound gaming package. You use one hand and the controller has an analog stick with four action buttons on it. It’s a bit reminiscent of a Nintendo Wiimote – makes you wonder where the name was inspired from. There are many games in the Android Market already compatible with the Zeemote, including the popular title R-Type, and you may even be able to use it with some of your emulators. It goes perfectly with many Android devices, from 3.2 inch phones to 10.1 inch tablets. And if you want the ultimate gaming experience, Zeemote + Phone/Tablet + TV + HDMI-out = awesome.

Today’s Contest Rules/Regulations:

Most people should be just about done dressing their Christmas trees but we’re wondering if you guys could add one more ornament for us – a Phandroid ornament!

  • You have until 11:59 PM Eastern today to create a Phandroid ornament that features our logo. The ornament can be made out of anything – if it hangs on a branch of the Christmas tree it’s good enough for us!
  • Take a photo of the ornament hanging on the Christmas tree. The Phandroid logo should be clearly visible. (optional) Include a nice cheerful holiday smile if you want :)

ps dbtabasco is my forum name, not sure why the face book name is showing up instead.

  36. I’m a firm believer these contests are rigged and the Phandroid employees only pick their friends and people they know win and keep the prizes, so I am not participating anymore.

Since i’m not participating i’d just like to share the 2 ideas that I was going to do.

The first one was of my own creation, and it was hanging a Cinder Block from my tree by a chain with a phandroid logo on the front.

The second was a co-workers idea of taking my Christmas Tree outside and hanging it from another tree in my yard and then hanging the Phandroid sign from that.

    Would have been epic.

Sorry Phandroid. I just don’t trust you anymore.

    Thanks for reading!

    1. Something tells me you are also a firm believer that the world will be ending in less than a year.

      1. Duh! I common sense there. Nostradamus predicted it so it must be true. On Dec 22, 2011 2:11 PM, “Disqus”

  37. Barbie’s a Phan!

  38. My ornament really has to be seen on video to truly be appreciated – the
Phandroid logo changes colors (blue, red, green), snow falls in the background,
and it plays Jingle Bells. It’s the perfect ornament for a true Phandroid
    reader!

  72. Anyone want a cookie? How about a Phandroid logo cookie on a Christmas tree?

I completely homemade my own chocolate chip cookie (god I love chocolate chip cookies) Phandroid logo and individually hung each piece on my tree with candy canes as the droid’s antenna.

Posted in the bottom is the final product and you can follow the link to see various steps in the process. (please let me know if the link does not work) The steps include the beginning of the end as I eat my awesome creation. :)https://plus.google.com/photos/110403683348433229300/albums/5688787110939812737

    1. ugh… too much cookie… feeling nauseous….

  73. The closest I could get without having a real tree.  Enjoy!

    1. And a close up of the “ornament”.

  74. No tree here, so the odds of winning are probably close to nil, but we have xmas lights(!) plus some creative thinking(!) to try and have some fun with it anyway. :)

I present to you… the geekiest xmas tree of them all — A Christmas *Filesystem* Tree — and hanging from its “branch” is a magical Phandroid ornament made out of bee-you-tee-ful *ASCII* art.

The first image is zoomed in on the text tree just a bit to show that it was even created with a “tree” command. No rules have been broken here, folks! :)

    1. That is freaking awesome!!!! Two Thumbs up

  75. My Blackberry wont load Phandroid.com without crashing so it is not good for much more than a Christmas tree ornament anyway – thanks for the idea Phandroid! Hopefully I’ll get an Android device under the tree and be reading the Phandroid blog on the go again. Merry Christmas.

  76. Here is my ornament made from a belt buckle I bought yesterday for my birthday! Maybe a family member of Andy! Lol. Happy holidays all!

    http://db.tt/97AXDXpn

  77. Here is my handmade ornament.
Its a light bulb. The bottom of it is water marblelized, don’t know if you can see it that good. Its filled with cotton and also has cotton wings and glitter.

    1. i name it the phandroid angel :)

  78. This is what keeps me from losing it while I’m at work..hahaha

  79. It’s amazing how I have ~20 pieces of glitter on the little tree, and like 50 on me. Glitter is truly the herpes of craft supplies :( Also, I don’t celebrate Christmas, so you’ll just have to settle for a branch of a fake tiny tree.

  80. Getting crafty for a Fire… (I do believe in Santa Claus, I do believe in Santa Claus!)

  81. wow.. this took me some time lol..
My ornament is a Santa Android (Phanta Clause?)
using ‘moon dough’, and paper clips
white twist tie pieces for the eyes
with a little burlap sack (my cat’s cat nip bag)
and a little cotton ball beard  :)

    Happy Holidroid Everyone!

    1. (not a 2nd entry just a second view of my ornament from the back)
since things look like they’re almost floating.
but it’s all supported w/one hanger to the tree.
the paper clips are holding it all together from the back.

  82. My entry- laser cut acrylic Phandroid robot (and snowflake)
    http://i.imgur.com/PlIj9.jpg

Sorry for the low quality pic but I don’t have any good cameras!

    1. You certainly have a nice VersaLASER, though

      1. Thanks but I actually got it from Full Spectrum Engineering.

  83. Wow took longer than I thought. The hard part was counterbalancing the ornament so that andy wouldn’t be sideways. Also I don’t have a christmas tree, so the oak outside my deck is all I could find. Winning would be the best holiday gift ever!

    1. I hope the phandroid trademark andy wink counts as the logo being clearly visible.

  84. I call this the Happy Holidroid Ornament ;-)

  85. Almost didn’t get this in, lol.  It was fun making the Santa hat and beard.

I present to you, Phanta Claus!

(Disqus mutes the colors a bit.  Here’s how it really looks –  http://sarcaustic.tumblr.com/post/14600669656/phantaclaus )

  86. I should at least get Points For being the Biggest Phandroid Ornament :) :)

Not Bad considering i just saw todays contest post a little over 30 Min ago :P

  87. Scratch that last post I forgot to upload the images. The ornament below is my Happy Holidroid Ornament!!!!

  88. Custom Made and Designed Phandroid Ornament (as a Reindeer!).

    http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4264/phandroidornament.jpg

He even has a glowing RED Nose!

His legs dangle and he even has accessories (like an Angry Birds banner…cut off of a gummy worm box…)
    http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/6016/accessorized.jpg

ALL PARTS ARE FROM THE OFFICE (hot glue was tacked on when I got home).
    http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1194/backophandroid.jpg
    – 4x paper clips
    – 1 red LED
    – Printed out
    – Cardboard
    – Glue Stick (to attach the picture to cardboard
    – 2 push pins
    – Hot glue (if you want it to stay together better than tape).
    – 1 AAA Battery too on power low to run your mouse.
    – 1 used coffee straw heated using a hair dryer and molded into a candy cane.

This takes less than 30min to make and its somewhat eco friendly….

    http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1592/meandphandroid.jpg
    http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/2361/phandroidlogo.jpg

  89. I used a router to to cut the image out of 1/4 inch plexi glass and then put a silver frame around it and blue leds on the top and bottom and conected them to a battery pack to make it glow. took about 3 hours to make. And yes my christmas tree already had blue lights on it.

  90. Deep V Andy

  91. Pick mine pleeeeeeeeeease!!!!!

  92. We LOVE YOU PHANDROID!!!! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

  93. Shit just got real.

No better way to ruin an Apple than with a Phandroid logo!
    http://i.imgur.com/DhRnE.jpg

  94. ——

3D, that’s right, THREE dimensional Phandroid ornament!

This picture frame ornament comes with the necessary red and green lenses to be able to appreciate the 3D effect of the picture.  You put the green and red lenses up to your eye and BAM, the Phandroid logo is literally IN YOUR FACE.

One of a kind can certainly mean that it’s special, but it’s probably not THREE dimensions special!

*This was actually tough to put together, had to find everything from what I had on hand at work.

    ——

  95. Here is the story about this airplane.  I made this plane some time ago after i got inspired from seeing this man selling some also, his looked way better and cooler, but i get the satisfaction knowing that i made my with my own hands.

Here you see Phandroid touring this tree!1st pic is the driver, htc ^^
2nd pic is that daredevil advertising Phandroid
3rd and on is different angles of the final version
    good luck all!

  96. Hmm, strangely the EXIF data of my pictures is weird and is dated 2002. =

  97. Origami Android! No tape/glue/cutting involved, save for the tape holding on the Phandroid sign :)

    1. For anyone interested, the origami design, created by Gerwin Sturm, can be downloaded here: http://quantumrand.net/phandroid/android.pdf

  98. here’s to hoping

  99. With logo
