New Ice Cream Sandwich Hidden Feature: “Dreams” (Screensavers)

20

Those boys over at Google definitely know how to have a good time. First it was the NyanDroid Easter egg and now we have this. Well, I wouldn’t exactly call this an Easter egg. More like a hidden feature no one has heard about — until now. It’s called “Dreams” and it acts as a screen saver that strangely serves absolutely no other purpose than looking kinda flashy. The feature is actually buried deep in the Ice Cream Sandwich OS but with a little know-how and the use of Launcher Pro, Dreams is easily accessible. So, when you want to zone out and just watch all of your icons fly at your face — now you can. If you’re into that sorta thing. What’s more is the flying icons can actually be tapped and if you’re quick enough, maybe you’ll launch your intended app. We keep learning new things about Ice Cream Sandwich and it’s fun little tidbits like this that keep it interesting. Can’t say screen savers would ever be a feature I would want on my phone (battery killer) but how ’bout you?

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. google you tricky bastard

  2. Acutally this is a “ok” feature for tablets. You have to remember that ICS is also a Tablet OS.

    1. hm I think you may get to something there. Maybe that’s why this feature is not accessible on the phone. Only on the tablet

      1. Or TV…
Screen savers make even more sens on Google TV

  3. Would be cool to look at while on acid

  4. I think this would be an excellent feature if it had 2 things:

    1. Does not have an overly obnoxious take on battery life
    2. Was more functional, like giving notifications.

Hopefully the modding community can use this feature, and come up with something great.

    1. yeah, I am definitely excited about adding notification on there. Imagine texts of “you have 1 email” flying to your face. Pretty cool

    2. Based on the video, the screensaver is a little bit slow.

      1. it’s running on a nexus s….. 1ghz single core

        1. Or it’s a slow rom, the activity runs very smooth on my Nexus One.

      2. or its because its using a bad(slow) screen capture app

  5. You sneeaaakky Google!

  6. One man’s screen saver is another man’s battery waster.

  7. Kinda cool to see on my original Evo.

    1. So the hidden screensaver comes with ICS and not just with Galaxy Nexus?

  8. I want this as a lwp.

  9. sorry guys, I dont know how this is news worthy or even something that gets you going…am I missing something?

  10. Why is this being called a screen saver? It’s a launcher. Or am I seeing this all wrong?

  11. On my N1, when you tap the screen while in the activity, it slows down the “Rocket Launcher” for 5 seconds so you can click and open apps!

  12. Google definitely got the idea from Windows 98’s screensaver which had various Windows icons flying at you. This to me is a little bit of new-age nostalgia.
