Samsung and Google Confirm October 19th Announcement in Hong Kong

33

We told you guys the Nexus Prime + Ice Cream Sandwich announcement wouldn’t be far off. Alongside our source’s word that details of the new venue and date were imminent, a rumor swirled around saying that October 19th in Hong Kong would be the hosting site of what we expect to be the blockbuster unveiling of the year. Samsung has just confirmed with us this change of events which means the phone’s launch date was likely not compromised as rumors suggested.

Specific time in Hong Kong is 10:00am, which would be 7pm pacific and 10pm eastern on October 18th for those of us in the United States. I wish I could tell you guys we’d be there, but that’s up in the air at this point. Hopefully this date sticks! Keep YouTube.com/android bookmarked for when that day comes.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. You got so excited you forgot to finish the article.
I don’t care…I just want the thing to be announced! Made my day!!!

By the way…HONG KONG IS 12 HOURS AHEAD OF US – so we will see this announcement on Tuesday, October 18th at 10pm EST

    1. Lol! Yea I hit publish a bit prematurely.

    2. You are correct about the 18th, however that would be Tuesday October 18th not Wednesday.

      1. Sorry…I’m all messed up. Had tuesday – edited to say wed and not back to tues. I just wish it was tomorrow

      2. Monday October 17th, at 19:00PST, or 22:00EST or Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 02:00 (UTC/GMT)

        Everyone thoroughly confused yet?

  2. Finally!

On the 18th, I shall know if I go to the T-Mo store to get the GS2 or wait for the Prime!

    1. similar here, AT&T GS2 VS Prime, hope Prime rocks~~~~!!!!!!

  3. why hong kong? btw hong kong is quite the city, been there before just don’t see the relevance to doing a US-based phone launch in China… Although the GS2 was announced in the states and only came back here 6 mos after everyone else got it, maybe they’re doing the opposite this time? ;)

    1. Well the world is bigger than the US and maybe, just maybe, other countries get it also.

    2. Why not Hong Kong? Why the US? It’s a Korean phone after all.
The Galaxy S2 was announced in Barcelona, which isn’t in the US either.
I think it’s nice from Samsung to unveil major products anywhere on the globe.

      1. But Google is an American company.

  4. The event is being held literally 5 blocks away from where I live. Checked allthingsdigital website and realized it cost almost 4000 USD to attend the event. Guess i’ll be streaming it on youtube instead.

  5. where and whene o can buy this prime ?))

  6. after all this time i lost my interest in this phone

      1. No sir, YOU’RE an idiot. AM511 is also an idiot.

      2. thank you ;)

  7. Here it comes…. HERE IT COMES!!!! Aaaaand boom goes the dynamite.

    1. I don’t understand why a phone that is apparently a VZW exclusive, is being introduced in Hong Kong. It makes me nervous, and that maybe VZW is not getting the Nexus Prime.. I have been waiting a long time for this. If this isn’t released on VZW, I am gonna be pissed.

  8. Awesome, please announce this phone will come out quickly for AT&T!

  9. YAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

  10. Google can only benefit from taking a more international view. Too many services are taking too long to launch outside of the US. International execution is weak, which leaves competitors (Apple, especially) without a fight.

Hopefully doing major announcements like this in other parts of the world will begin to change the mindset within the ranks at Google.

  11. Am I the only one that finds this slightly ironic? They delayed the event that was supposed to take place two days ago out of respect for Steve Jobs’ death. Then they rescheduled it for the same day that Apple is having their official memorial for Jobs……

  12. i’ve been waiting for this all day!

  13. great. the amazon sale for verizon phone ends on the 17th. I’m on T-Mobile, family plan – 250/month.. with my 22% discount with verizon, i can switch for 280/month, not too bad. I’d buy the Bionic and sell it for the prime.. if i knew the prime was coming to verizon.. :'( idk idk what to do.

  14. Im so Jelly for Ice Cream!

  15. Damn it, I just purchased the 4S! Grrrrr!!!!! Well, it’s still on backorder so this gives me time…

  16. I’m going to be unreasonably angry if the Nexus Prime is exclusive to Verizon at first.

    1. Agreed if there is no GSM version at launch I’LLC $#it a brick

  17. Sigh… I haven’t had it this bad since the time I waited for the Nexus One on verizon and had to wait even further for the Incredible.

Please oh please don’t disappoint me in the same fashion Verizon!!!

  18. They probably chose HK because to show “face” to China while yet having the free speech to market how they want too.

  19. Yeaa.. I can actually watch it this time!

  20. So that’s streaming at 3am on Wednesday in the UK? Time to stock up on coffee.
