Rockstar Bringing Grand Theft Auto III to Android this Fall

24

Rockstar Games is bringing the game that redefined sandbox-style action to an Android handset near you, and no, this ain’t no Chinatown Wars. We’re talking the first Grand Theft Auto game to make the jump to full 3D now making the jump to mobile devices. That’s right, this fall Grand Theft Auto III drops on Android. With hardware that puts the consoles the game first launched on to shame (imagine that, something as powerful as a PS2 now fits in your pocket), we don’t expect Rockstar to skimp here. The only real drawback is that the game will only be compatible with select devices (the Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, and Samsung Galaxy S2)

A specific release date and pricing has not been mentioned, but we’d expect this one to err on the pricier side in terms of mobile games. With fall now in full swing, it should be a matter of weeks before we are racing around city street with total disregard for the welfare of the general public.

  1. badass…can’t wait to play this on the upcoming nexus

  2. HTC EVO 2 = HTC EVO 3D?

    1. Lol! I was just thinking the same thing, people are going to wonder what the HTC EVO 2 is.

  3. Did you deliberately not close the parenthesis because you are going to add the Nexus Prime to the compatibility list once it is announced?

    1. Let me refer you to XKCD for the parenthesis analysis.

      1. So this is the reason why I’ve been biting my nails for almost an hour…

        …please update the article!

  4. I am trying to picture how the controls will work…

      1. I am more thinking about when you’re in a huge gunfight, trying to toggle the sight lock while running around and such.

        1. Oh, that…
          Simplified ? :P

  5. “With fall now in full swing, it should be a matter of weeks before we are racing around city street with total disregard for the welfare of the general public.”

And hookers. But no one cares about them anyway.

  6. If it runs on the Atrix, it’ll run on Tegra 2, why not ALL Tegra 2 devices?

  7. “only compatible with select devices”

For now, as soon as it’s released, it’ll be hackable to run on damn near anything I’d guess, given android’s great community. Just no 100% support, but I’d say a lot of stuff will be able to run it, especially given the variety of hardware in that list of compatible phones.

  8. Yes! I cannot wait for this

  9. So only for ipad 2 & ip4s,
    Sorry apple users fragmentation lol.

  10. The selected devices announced so far:

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S

Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2

Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

This probably won’t come out for the Prime. Notice how no phones that use the PowerVr SGX540 (Hummingbird-SGS/OMAP4-Optimus 3D, Droid 3, Bionic, etc) is listed for support, meanwhile you have every other dual-core SoC listed. Even the iP4 didn’t make the list.

  11. Uhhh I hope thats not a complete list, Why would the Xperia Play not be thought of to carry this titlle!?

    1. Because its not powerful enough? There is no single-core phone on that list.

  12. I might only buy this on ios i know galaxy nexus will be big enough but prob be better an ipad game

  13. so badass, the nexus was born for this

  14. As powerful as a ps2? Lol no. My lg ally is about 15x more powerful than a ps2. A tegra 2 is like 40x

  15. No HTC Sensation!?
