Facebook For Android Updated In The Android Market – Brings New Features and Honeycomb Support

34

Facebook for Android was just updated in the Market today. The update includes the usual bug-fixes and improvements and although it wasn’t mentioned in the changelog, the Facebook team has finally added Honeycomb support for Android tablets. Don’t believe me? Check out the screenshot below.

As for the other additions, you can now “pull to refresh” to update your News Feed (am I the only one who hates this?). All of these come as welcomed changes to help the Android version of the Facebook app “suck less.” You can check out the full list as well as the Market link below:

  1. Made it easier to share with who you want
  2. Improved the sharing tool to add privacy controls on posts and match your settings on the web site
  3. Added the ability to tag friends and places in posts
  4. Added new design for Profile and Group Walls
  5. Fixes and tweaks:
  6. Improved photo browsing with swiping
  7. Added the ability to tag your friends in photos
  8. Improved Messages and Notifications
  9. Fixed a number of crashes and performance issues

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. can we have a way to delete wall posts made by other people?

    1. If your referring to a post by someone on your wall, then yes just swipe your finger to the right on the post and click “Remove”

      1. oh cool.. didnt know that can be done…will try it now…is it possible to delete my own post?

        1. Yes

  2. I would only like “pull to refresh” if they did it like twitter’s app. View status’s from the bottom up

    1. THIS!

  3. Wheres the ability to tag friends in photos? Dont tell me its another hidden feature.

  4. I’m fairly certain the pull to refresh feature was “appropriated” from the FriendCaster app. It’s been a part of their app for several months at least…

I seriously stopped using the “official” FB app. It sucks compared to FriendCaster. Not only is load time generally shorter (without that “photo stream” stuff that I personally hated), but the app and data don’t take up nearly as much space either. I’ve browsed dozens of my friends’ profiles/pictures and the total app size (app + data + cache) is still under 5 MB.

  5. its had honeycomb support, ive had it on my xoom since i got it in june

  6. The tablet ui is nothing more than a blown up version of the phone ui. Also, the friend list still crashes on my 10.1v. The update is very nice on my gs2 though, they’ve made some welcome improvements.

  7. Oh god that looks terrible on honeycomb.

Now that I got the update. I hate how it has the pull down to refresh. This is not iOS!

  8. Great update.

  9. This is the best this app has ever been!! at least for phones, I dont own a tablet. :(

  10. Facebook App Designer:

“Okay let’s begin the Honeycomb tablet optimization”
*Checks box to allow phone app to install on 3.0 and above*
    ………
    “Done”

    I kid.
At least this update makes it more functional than its ever been on phones.

    1. White screen fix! Deleted fb widget from home screen by dragging to the trash can. Put fb widget back on home screen. Now works for me. Samsung Droid Charge I just got a $829.99 iPåd2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.
      I use BÏDFiRsT. COM

  11. Cool combination. Facebook is very massive and update its own side each day by day. That is why it is stable on the second rank. And its android combination is nice one. By the way very nice explanation of yours. Thank you.

  12. I got excited when I read it now has honeycomb support but it’s the same app i’ve been using since I got my tablet… The friends feature always force closes, force closes before, still force close now.. Pfffft

    1. I get exactly the same force close on my Xoom :(

  13. Friendcaster is still #1 on Honeycomb. ^_^

  14. They gotta do something, googleplus is kicking FB’s ass!

    1. I wish you were right but I’m not sure that’s the case. Aside from the initial excitement not a lot seems to be happening with it (Even the chatty Mr Chavez has only posted something public once in the last month). I think Google+ is great but it still doesn’t have corporate pages or events. It does have a nice mobile app though but even that isn’t impressive in honeycomb.

      1. It’s also got zero draw to the public – i’ve tried inviting all my non-techy friends from facebook but they simply don’t care.

  15. I’m sticking with the “Friend Me” Facebook app for Honeycomb…it’s tablet-optimized and looks a helleva lot better. At least until Facebook ports their iPad app to Honeycomb.

  16. Great update.

  17. How is this honeycomb suuport? Accounts still don’t add properly and you still get the screenresizer which implies its NOT honeycomb yet. Same horrific layout to boot…

  18. how the hell do i tag pic that are already uploaded on to facebook!

  19. Just.. use the website.

  20. Will probably try it… but not getting my hopes up. The previous version was a BATTERY HOG. I would only get about 4hrs on my vibrant, uninstalled and immediately started getting my normal 7-8hrs. Be vigilant of our apps guys, and yes Friendcaster kicks ass, I’ve B&N using it since it was Flow.

  21. Not sure how they felt they could say it now has Honeycomb support. It HAS been working (poorly) on Honeycomb much earlier. The app is clearly still not designed to take advantage of honeycombs features. The screen usage is still terrible on tablets. Now when you open up the News Feed it basically just opens up a browser window. You still can’t swipe to go between photos and adding comments to photos is still painful.

Just use the website (the full website) when on a tablet. Or friend caster which really does have honeycomb support. Or convince everyone to use Google Plus.

  22. After the update, when I try to open the app, all I get is a white screen that is frozen for about a minute, then the app FCs. Does Facebook even test anything before they release an update?

    1. Same thing with me — it’s absolutely pathetic how deeply flawed the FB Android app continues to be, update after update. If I found out later that this was all some weird Kaufmanesque performance piece to see how many FB users could be irritated over a 3-year period, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised.

  23. White screen and then force close pop up for me also after update. Anyone know what’s going on?

  24. White screen fix! Deleted fb widget from home screen by dragging to the trash can. Put fb widget back on home screen. Now works for me. Samsung Droid Charge

  25. Thank the heavens!! There’s an update. Let me get it, because right now this app is sucking…
