MIUI Style Launcher Localized And Compatible With All Devices [Download]

If you’re anything like me, you can’t get enough of MIUI. It’s polished good looks and big bright icons are impossible to get out of your head (like that hot cashier at Walmart). Only problem is, the ROM is only available on a rooted devices. Since I have yet to take that plunge, I’ve resorted to other methods. Take this this beautifully styled MIUI homescreen replacement on XDA for instance. After finding this Chinese MIUI launcher in the Market called Tencent Desktop (from the developers of QQLauncher), XDA user Quinny899 set to localizing the app for all us westerners.

In what will no doubt be a make-or-break for most, just like the MIUI ROM, gone is the familiar Android app drawer you’ve come to know and love. But that’s exactly what gives this launcher a true MIUI experience. You’ll find all of the MIUI styled app icons, dock and folders and even a handy themeing engine. If you’re wondering how to get the transparent notification bar, well that’s for the more experienced rooted users (and can be found here).

Honestly, I was surprised with how accurate this launcher captured the MIUI feel and is the reason I decided to share it with you all today. Tencent Desktop (Localized) works and looks great on almost every device, without the need for root access or any kind of modding. Simply download the app, install (may need to enable “Unknown Sources” in your Settings > Applications) and enjoy! Cheers!

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

    1. this is a carbon copy of the iphone UI. they didnt even change the camera icon. So why didnt you just get an iphone?

      1. Come on now. I love my iPhone 4 but not everyone wants an iPhone ;)

      2. Really? 1 similar icon means we want an iPhone? Lol.. There’s a little more to it than that, yo.

It’s all Android, dawg. Through and through..

  1. So…it’s MIUI without the MIUI. I may have to give this a shot. And Chris, you STILL haven’t rooted your TB even though it’s so simple now? I’m disheartened to hear that!

    1. HAHA! I’ve been too busy! The Thunderbolt is pretty awesome stock, not gonna lie. I can’t have all these devices rooted and try to keep up with the latest ROMs of each. I’m only one man! =p

      1. I can’t stand Sense! CM7. Flash it and love it! ;)

        1. I can’t stand vanilla Android! Lol.. It’s either Sense or MIUI for me :D

          1. wait, you have a thunderbolt AND an evo 3D? DAYUM GURL!

  2. MMe too

  3. I don’t understand why MIUI has to copy IOS so blatantly. As an Android fan i find it very embarrassing that companies skinning Android have to copy IOS very shamelessly. *cough* Samsung

    1. I’m an Android fan myself and I love the look of uniform icons and folders that show the contents. MIUI is very much all the things you love about Android with some of the polish of iOS <3

      1. I agree, go with Go Launcher, totally NOT like iPHONE

    2. It’s a blatant copy-catting that only the Chinese can get away with. Suffice to say, however, for me, MIUI mostly feels like a best of _both_ worlds. My only issue is I’d like to be able to use the MIUI Launcher with an App Drawer instead of App Pages.

      1. how to “make” the app drawer in MIUI:

        1: make a folder
2: put all your apps into it
3: put the folder on the bottom shortcut bar

BAM, now you have NO issues with MIUI :)

        1. But if you do that, you’ll just have a big app drawer and no apps on the homescreen…

    3. I really like the look of Android so much more than iOS. The boxes just rub me wrong, I suppose.

    4. you obviously have no idea how many features found in iOS were copied from 3rd party devs who sell their apps through Cydia. in iOS 5 you’ll see more of the same only this time apple will copy features not only from 3rd part devs on Cydia but will also include RIM & Android features.

    5. really? ha. look at the new iOS and how it “so blatantly” copies Android. apple is not an innovator but dont tell them i said that or they will sue me…

  4. …can’t…read…chinese…or whatever it is…but it’s cute!

i hate apple, but i don’t hate the way iphone looks. :)

  5. I tried it. Don’t like it. I’ts very slow and some of it is in Chinese. Much prefer Go Launcher.

  6. “In what will no doubt be a make-or-break for most, just like IOS, gone is the familiar Android app drawer you’ve come to know and love.”

I fixed that for you. ;-)

    1. LOL! Yeah, but who really needs an app drawer? I lose stuff in mine all the time o_O

Besides, iOS doesn’t have awesome widgets =p

  7. Every post has this in it………….its very annoying

  8. I will bludgeon you with a car battery, spammer! >:O

    1. Spammers? We don’t need no stinkin’ spammers!

I don’t even see no stinkin’ spammer! ;)

  9. SO… Why is it a problem to have a theme/launcher that resembles iOS? Some people want that. Let them have it. For those that don’t, there are other options. I don’t get why people are “sickened” by a theme like this. Please do grow up.

  10. I Rather like it. Although it frustrates the crud outta me that I cannot use different icons. For instance, my camera and sms app icon are still stock sense for my Thunderbolt, It didn’t take the shape and form of that beautiful MIUI Icon…although my browser, and phone did.

  11. too iphone like.. i do like it but i would rather have an app drawer rather than a bunch of apps and folders on my home screens

  12. Also on miui here, and I love it, and they are right about the app drawer, just create a folder and drop the apps in it, then slide that down to the launcher bar. Perfect app drawer plus you can sort the app drawer alphabetically or by most used, and which is convenient.

  13. Hot cashier at Walmart? I don’t think i’ve ever seen a cashier at Walmart that wasn’t morbidly obese or taller than 5’2, and being more round than tall, with the occasional pregnant 5′ hispanic lady.

This should take off pretty well though. It does have a nice look to it.

  14. To use the miui rom you need a arm7 processing chip I have 6 so this will be great to try out to see what the hype is all about! Thanks

  15. android is open source, so?????

  16. Chinese app and hot over the 90 year old checkout ar Walmart, which is also Chinese. Might as well just turn communist and move over there. Oh wait, they’re buying us anyhow, never mind.

  17. After playing with it for a couple of minutes, I can only say one thing.

I like having an app drawer.

One of the more frustrating things about IOS was having to manage where apps went on the home screen. On my Android devices, I’ve just put about 20 most-often used icons on the home screen, with some less frequently used ones on the pages to either side… everything else goes in the drawer, which is automatically alphabetically organized.

    I like that system.

Yes, MIUI is pretty. And I would use it… if it had an app drawer.

  18. garbage!

  19. Looks cool. No App drawer sucks though.

  20. The clock on mine is in Chinese, this sucks….

  21. I’m not sure how I feel about a Phandroid writer being in love with MIUI (the iOS clone rom). It’s a good Rom, just saying…
