Microsoft Pokes Fun at Gmail (and Google) In This Corporate Parody Video

52

Came across this video today on YouTube of an internal corporate parody video shown during a Microsoft global sales conference that took place on July 20th. Looks like Microsoft is taking a few jabs at Google and poking fun at their Gmail ads and prying eyes when it comes to your inbox. I actually thought it was pretty funny — especially after the awesome Gmail update Google dropped on us today. If I saw the Gmail Man walking down the street, I could kiss him. What do you guys think? Good, lighthearted fun? Or a cheap blow from Microsoft? Oh- and what the heck is Office 365? Is that anything like Disney 365?

  1. What the heck is Microsoft 365? Seems like some kind of yearly protection service, not a Gmail alternative. Also, has anyone from Microsoft TRIED Gmail? How can you still be using Hotmail???

    1. Chris made a mistake. It was Office 365, as in Office on the cloud.

Regardless, that was a pretty funny video, although I don’t know why it was called a parody. What is it referencing?

      1. Oh snaps. You’re right. Fixed! Got Microsoft on the brain =p

    2. Actually hotmail really did copy every feature of gmail by now… :D

      1. And yet it continues to being utterly worthless.

  2. Dumb move MS. They’re getting better as a company, but this is just FUD.

    1. As stated in the article, it’s an internal video, not an official ad. I’d guess there are a few folks working in MS’s advertising dept that had a little fun at google’s expense.

  3. I laughed my a** off at that.

Now, I like my android phone, gmail and all that stuff, and if I were the paranoid type I might be really scared after seeing all the targeted ads showing up at every site I go to. But nah. It’s all good. Right?

        1. If y’all don’t like it, don’t use Google products.

          1. You pretty much can’t get thru a day without using google products… Much the same way that you can’t get thru a day without using MS products.

Google is still young, in a couple years everyone will hate them. Same as MS.

In the mean time, it’s nice to sit back and laugh on occasion.

          2. Microsoft is disliked because they purposely slow down the older operating systems to force online people to upgrade to their latest OS. Then they will begin the slowing process on that one a few years down the road etc.

  4. I didn’t find this funny at all. Also, I never get ads, as I use AdBlock+ like everyone should.

    1. But that’s how Phandroid gets paid and why I’m here today =/

      1. I see your ads when I’m on my phone, or another person’s computer, if it counts! And I make sure I leak my stuff to you first!

        1. That’s all that counts <3

          1. I <3 U Phandroid/Android Forums

      2. this is like the only reason i don’t run adblock. i like to support the sites i go to for daily, ok hourly… FINE 5 -10 times an hour.. gosh. but yeah, i like to support them with impressions at the very least. although every time i read an op-ed on BGR it makes me rethink my policy.

        every. single. time.

      3. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve EVER click on those ads. So if they are there or not it wouldn’t matter. I’d love to support Phandroid but the ads don’t work on me :(

      4. WIth the few people who may use that, by and large most of us don’t so your ok. You will be fine. :D Feel better now? Good get us the next cool/funny/usefull etc. story. Have fun with it too.

  5. Internal microsoft vids and stuff is full of brainwashing stuff like this.

A college teacher fooled me into joining MS’s “Microsoft Student Partner” thing. There’s lots of brainwashing over there, and it’s really unsettling. I lost all interest when they started promoting WP7 and Kinect as the best shit EVER.

    1. Well I’ve been at the Microsoft Dev Days and I will agree with you, they show it like there is NO alternative and it’s the best thing EVER while they hide problems like stability. I know other companies do the same but most of them not at this level.

  6. what the heck is office 365? where’s hotmail? dead?

  7. “Oh- and what the heck is Microsoft 365?”

You’re a tech reporter and you don’t know? Hmmm ;)

    1. I’m an ANDROID reporter gosh damnit. So, no! I do NOT know. =p

      1. LOL Okay, I guess that’ll pass :D

  8. I wouldn’t call it funny. Nor informative. It’s just out there. No wonder it was filed under millions of useless YouTube videos. What were you trying to find Chris? ;-)

    1. Japanese squid girls. Don’t judge me.

  9. Anyone think it’s a little funny that the video is hosted on youtube

    1. I doubt the original video was hosted on Youtube, as it was originally an internal Microsoft video. I imagine an employee snuck it out somehow and put it on Youtube as the most well-known video hosting service. XD

      1. Internal… yeah, right. Like Microsoft payed for this video just to make their employees laugh. Beleivable.

        1. Actually, yes. Companies tend to do this a lot (another example: IBM’s 1960s Cookie Monster videos). Like Courtney mentioned, someone probably did sneak it out and put it on YouTube.

    2. I just think the video is funny….period. lol

      1. I didn’t even chuckle. I don’t know how much I trust google, but I don’t have much to hide. And it’s not like people are watching your emails, its computers.

  10. This is the saddest, most pathetic attempt at attacking Google I’ve ever seen, and it’s actually by Microsoft. It’s so laughable I just can’t believe this is real. Wow. An entire attack based on ONE thing they think Google is doing wrong. Ok Microsoft, I’ll ditch Gmail and switch everything to your shitty, backwards, terrible service! All because of one issue which you think is the end of the world!

Google ads don’t do shit. Their computers scan your email for keywords, and you and only YOU see the ads. Google employees don’t see your emails, and they don’t see the subject of the ads. I remember Steve Balmer criticizing Gmail’s targeted ads many, many years ago at a conference. Really Balmer, in all this time, you’re still barking at the same one issue that you discovered all those years ago? Gmail and Google services have been evolving and adding extraordinary features at an incredible rate, and meanwhile Microsoft products have stagnated because that’s what Microsoft does best, stagnate on their products features.

  11. For Microsoft to insinuate that Google is greedy and doesn’t respect people’s privacy – that is just outrageous. The reason I changed from Hotmail to Gmail in six years ago was because of the spam and banner-add-bombardment in my Hotmail inbox. And Microsoft was the company that deleted thousands of emails from my wife’s Hotmail account because she had been idle for too long. Nice way of respecting your users, Microsoft! The truth is that Google believes that having morals is the best business model, while Microsoft believes that bullying and monopoly is a valid model. Oh how pathetic…

    1. Same happened to me. Both things – tons of spam in my Hotmail box, and complete wipe when I didn’t look at if for a few months. Outrageous!

  12. I highly doubt that Google cares about “who’s” sending the Gmail, rather than “what’s” being sent. Hmm…

I mean, you can type in “bomb” and it’ll show up, meaning a large amount of people must have typed in “bomb”, so therefore Google decides to put it in the quick list. And from the amount of people it would take… Yea I don’t think Google is wasting their time trying to link people to Gmail accounts. Especially since you can easily falsify an account. -.-

Nice interpretation Microsoft, but I prefer your user friendly Computer OS over your email. LoL!! :P

  13. That was just kind of sad on Microsoft’s part. Makes me wonder how Bing brings in it’s money?

  14. What is an ad?

  15. I effin love it! That’s why I always deny personalized ads everywhere. And that’s why I pay for a hosting just to have my own email server and keep Gmail only for Android needs and crappy sites subscriptions (porn? no no no, I didn’t mean phandroid). And btw, Office 365 is the dumbest name I could ever imagine.

  16. I thought it was somewhat funny, but Office 365 is a competitor for Google Apps for Business. Google Apps for Business, doesn’t actually run any ads in your software since its paid (and cheaper than Office 365), so the whole point is pretty much invalid.

  17. …….as long as it stays with ads I dont see the problem….If I mail my friend that I am looking to BUY a NEW COMPUTER and then an add shows up with a great offer on a NEW COMPUTER, then sure…..but msot often this is what happens:

I email stuff…..log out….visit websites…..see an article about google ads…..And then I think to myself….ads? there are ads in gmail? mine must be broke, haven’t noticed any ad since I have been using it the last two years.

at least with my hotmail I know there is a HUGE banner to the right that has never proven to be usefull….and hotmail is soo cluttered…..EVERY possible action you could EVER want to take, is listed on EVERY page….. I just use the delete button on the spam mails and log out……too bad some people still use my hotmail….I wish I’d never have to back there

  18. Lol If you didnt giggle a little at the “burning sensation” part you are a serious fanboy. It was actually pretty darn funny.

  19. Lets say thanks to Microsoft for another great job. Thank you Microsoft for thinking that we are stupid…

  20. Summed up in one word: immature.

  21. The acting…… it’s just so…. *shudders* HORRIBLE!!!

  22. Regardless of my personal feelings about Microsoft (and those aren’t terribly positive) that video is pretty funny.
