Verizon’s Usage-Based Data Plans Start Today

23

Don’t look no– too late. Verizon has already ended unlimited data for any new customers or any customers not grandfathered into the plan. Instead, anyone who wishes to sign up with Verizon from today will have to take advantage of their usage-based plans starting at $30 per month for smartphones. It’s on their site as I try to purchase the Motorola DROID 3 – more on that in a bit. Take a look above at the options you’ll be given when signing up as a new customer (click to enlarge). I hope some of you switched to Verizon for unlimited data when you had the chance because it’s now a fond, distant memory in light of the new kid on the block.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Yep. Looks like I’m never leaving Sprint.

  2. Dumb…if only we could use our ‘power in numbers’ to get what the customer wants…

  3. I made sure to activate this on my parents lines last night since they will soon join the world of the droid. My boss joined VZW on Tues hearing of this too lol.

  4. is the 30 a month unlimited tethering plan confirmed? My 4g is faster than my home interent so I tether to my tab and nook a lot and I would love to take advantage of it. I cannot find anything on VZW site about it?

    1. 2nd. If anyone knows or can find out.. At work and cant *611…

      1. I bit the bullet and called
        Phone:
        800-922-0204
How to reach a live person:
        Press 0
        Press # four times
        Press 0

At first the woman said she she didn’t see the unlimited tethering, but I said are you sure and she found it. Whole process took less than 4 minutes and she said I now have unlimited tethering on my account. Which is good because as of 6 days into my billing cycle I am at 12 gigs already

        1. Thank you VERY much. I will be calling in at lunch time and getting the same thing. I would NEVER have considered this, but the “free tethering period” reeled me in. It is amazing!

          1. yeah the wifi hotspot app works fantastic, much better than any of the “illegal” apps. I can actually use splashtop to access my pc on my tablet through my phone. Whut??

          2. It actually depends on your location and your connection. Barnacle tether works just as well for me as the stock wifi hotspot, and best of all, it’s FREE!! Screw Verizon and their charges to use hotspot. I already pay for an unlimited plan, I refuse to pay twice for data I’m already paying for. If you are you’re a sucker. (no offense)

          3. @ eclipsenyou – yeah but your actually in violation of the terms and service of your contract and therefore at risk. I plan on using this ALOT so I would prefer If I am covered. Also 60 bucks for internet, especially at 4g speeds is not that big of a deal.

PS. I tried barnacle and the speeds were atrosis. it was definitely throttling my 4g speeds to my pc.

    2. I went from an Incredible to a Thunderbolt and I was grandfathered in. Did mine at a Best Buy though.

  5. This may have been answered in one of the previous posts, but does anyone know what happens if I’m on an unlimited 3G plan, and I get a 4G phone? Does the “grandfather” rule still apply, or do they count that as a different plan?

    1. A smartphone is a smartphone as far as VZW is concerned. If you have unlimited data on a smartphone, you get to keep it. 3G or 4G is irrelevant.

  6. Look at those prices..!!! My back side is just twitching with trepidation at those rates. 12yrs with Sprint sure counts for something. Unltd data/sms/mms, nights @ 8pm, n/wkends, 750 daytime, total with tax, $36.
    I’m going nowhere.

  7. WOW The price is ridiculously expensive!!!

    I would have thought it’d be cheaper…considering unlimited was $30 before >_>;;;

The whole point of tier data is option. Like have it as $15 for 500mb, $25 for 1GB or something for people that want a cheaper option

    1. cheaper equal less money for them.

  8. Verizon had an opportunity to do some good will by offering lower priced plans. Instead we get less for the same price. I hate Verizon so much but they are the only one with a canada plan

  9. This will NEVER last… Verizons new business and smartphone conversions will collapse under this pricing model. I give it 3 months tops…

    1. problem with that is there is no real competition aside from Sprint (once ATT buys out Tmo); I really hope Sprint gets flooded with buisness and are able to expand there coverage areas like crazy, but i dunno…

  10. I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com

  11. This just means I wont even bother buying a Droid 3. Ill just wait for the Droid Bionic in August or Droid Targa around Christmas cause 4g plans are unlimited.

    1. 3G/4G plans are one and the same. The Targa is cancelled.

  12. Ouch and I was thinking about getting back on VZW cause their LTE service is pretty awesome around here. Looks like Verizon will never have my business and AT&T has a customer for as long as they maintain my grandfathered data plan. Good thing I really like their service and have had 0 problem with it (even if Verizon’s LTE is significantly faster then AT&T’s HSPA+).
