Sony Ericsson Launches First Android Market Channel Dedicated to a Manufacturer

9

Sony Ericsson has become the first handset manufacturer to launch their own channel in the Android Market with the hope that it may guide owners of their handsets to the applications best tailored to them. The channel won’t appear on all Sony Ericsson devices, as the final decision will be left up to the carrier, but if a handset is eligible Sony Ericsson’s software portal will replace the “My Apps” tab on your Android Market homescreen.

In a blog post announcement, SE laid out the following bullet points on how they plan to use their Android Market channel:

  • Provide recommendations to help you find the best games & apps that enhance your Sony Ericsson ‘most entertaining’ experience.
  • Provide a way to easily find original apps from Sony Ericsson such as Timescape plugins etc.
  • From time to time offer exclusive games & apps only available in this channel.
  • Help our developer partners promote their apps & games giving them a highlighted market space to our consumers.

  3. Does anyone really check these channels? Sprint, Verizon, and I’m sure other carriers have had their own channel for quite a while now, and it’s usually either junky free apps, or paid apps which have way better (and free-er) alternatives.

Tailoring it to a specific phone (or line of phones) I guess would give you peace of mind that the app will work on your device, and organize all these “exclusive” apps in one place.

    *yawn*

But regardless, any Phondroid reader certainly knows how to find apps without the carriers/manufacturers suggesting them.

    1. Good point Cliff – I just scanned the list from Sony Ericsson and installed… nothing!
