Thin Wins, According to NEC MEDIAS Japanese Sales Performance

by Quentyn Kennemer on April 1st, 2011 at 9:33 am

NEC came to market with what appears to be the world’s thinnest smartphone. It’s measured at a thickness of just 8.7mm thin and has some nice specs, to boot. According to IT Media, it outsold every device available in the Japan for the week between March 14th and March 20th.

Sure, a fast start doesn’t always mean a fast finish, but it’s a very good start for NEC who has been trying to break into European and US markets as of late. I’m sure they’re happy with the performance but it remains to be seen if they can keep it up. Here were the top 10 devices for that week, courtesy of MobileCrunch:

  1. NEC Medias
  2. iPhone 4 / 16GB
  3. Sharp IS05
  4. iPhone 4 / 32GB
  5. Samsung Galaxy S
  6. Sharp SH009
  7. Toshiba IS04
  8. Panasonic P-07B
  9. Kyocera Kantan Keitai K005
  10. Sharp IS03

So they split Iphone 4 into 2 categories? If they combined those, wouldn’t that beat out NEC?

At the same time why not…

An evo or droid may not be able to beat iphone 4 sales, though android would beat ios…. Same screwy marketing everyone else uses.

Sorry It’s not screwy marketing, it’s about the phones os. Yes Android beats iphone in over all sells because it’s the number one os made by more OEMs. Now if you where to compare iphone sales to lets Moto’s or Samsung’s then you’re correct, but iphone’s over all sales are not on point with Androids as a hold.

This thin nonsense is getting as bad as the small nonsense was. Now small is out with big screens so make it thin even though phones are thin enough and the only way to make it thinner is smaller battery and crappier camera but then of course battery life becomes a factor etc. It’s just stupid.

Hopefully the Samsung Galaxy S II (soon to be my iPhone replacement) being at 8.49 mm will put up some good scores on the board.

The Medias is only 7.7mm thick so you might want to correct the article. The Xperia Arc that was released here in Japan a week and a half ago is 8.7mm thick though and the difference is quite noticable indeed when you compare the two. The pink Arc exclusive to the Japanese market is real sexy and is bound to sell like hotcakes with the female population.
