212

After briefly pulling the EC05 update for the Samsung Epic 4G, reports are coming in that both this and the EB13 version of Samsung’s Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Galaxy S device have resumed. Many users are reporting new instances of EB13 being pushed to their devices from this morning onward, though there is still some confusion as to what version of the software you may eventually get. Join the AndroidForums discussion on the topic at the source link below if you have any light to shed on the matter.

  1. I feel like I have read this story before…

    1. Actually, mine updated this morning. there was some new apps added also. ” free HD Game” App. of course, you have to subscribe. “News and Weather app, Sprint ID, Voice recorder, Video player, your email, If attached to your yahoo like me, or other emails will now have an unread widget indictor of how much unread emails you have. There are a few more slight changes. Also depends on how your phone is already set up. So far, so good. Running smoothly. Will let you all know if or when something goes terribly wrong.

  2. Got popup this morning for installing EB05 but it failed. sprint said they r having problems again and many calls r coming in. they said to wait again, booo.

  3. new commenting system!!!! finally!

  4. Mine got eb05 froyo this morning no problems. Love it.

  5. why is my phone playing music when idle and when looking through pictures? It is kind of creepy. Is this part of the update? And if so how can I change it?

    1. It happened to me too!! Creepy! I changed my Text and Facebook notification tones and it stopped!

      1. Where did you go to change your text & notification tones? When I tried to do that my phone totally ignored me & kept the annoying music. Did you go into settings?

        1. I can’t stop the music … even when I am on the phone. How do you stop this?

    2. I was hearing the spa music and birds after I downloaded the update March 26 2011. But when I accepted the requests to activate a reset of my email and, to factory settings, the music went away and the phone seems to work fine. My photos were saved and so were the apps I downloaded. It seems to have lost my browser bookmarks, though. From the main screen go to menu, notifications, and accept the notifications to complete the upgrade.

  6. Yeah that’s great, now verizon needs to get there head out of there a** & get with the program here… I’m a fascinate user & verizon is pissing me off with this crap, I wouldn’t recommend verizon to ANYBODY!!! Stick with Sprint or T-Mobile cuz verizon is a joke…

  7. My apps keep firing automatically. Seems like no matter how hard my killer works, if i move from one app to another you can count on 8-10 opening in the background to suck the life out of my battery.

    1. That is EXACTLY my problem right now. This update is the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever seen. 6 hours of my phone being unplugged and my battery is at 30% with barely any usage.

    2. Dump the task killer and your battery life will improve.

  8. Hate it!! My texting has totally changed! No sound when new text comes through. None of the words I type in a text are recognized. If I misspell a word it won’t auto correct it. I want my old version of texting back!!

    1. After the update, did you turn it off then back on? I had to do that, then everything worked just fine!

    2. THIS IS REALLY BAD!! 1YR TO GET FROYO!!! ANDROID STARTING TO REALLY SUCK!!! THEY BETTER SHOW ME SOMETHING IN GOOGLE I/O OR NOT IS BACK TO APPLE I GO!!!

      1. the year delay was an issue with sprint/samsung not google/android.

hate sprint. hate your nascar app.

  9. ironically…my mother has no clue about android updates for her Epic she just presses yes and keeps goin.

  10. This update sucks a**. My phone keeps freezing and my apps close while I’m using them….I want the old version back!!!!

  11. I HATE THIS!!!! It has completely defaulted all of my assigned ringtones back to the original ones. My downloaded tones are still on my SD card but the freaking phone wont give me an option to add them back to the ringtone list so that I can use them. It has changed everything on my text messages and it seems that the keys dont pick up the letters as well when I text. It has also muted my text notification. Not to mention that the changes that it made to my SIM card caused my Norton Antivirus to lock my phone which took 2 hours and a ton of hassle to finally get it unlocked.. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT

    1. Had the same issues. I was able to resolve the ringtone issue by going to the song, selecting options and then adding it back as a ringtone. Test messages

    2. To get your notification tone back on text messages, go to messages, menu, settings, ringtone.

    3. If you have an Epic you couldn’t possibly have a SIM card so this entire claim is clearly a lie. My update works perfectly fine. I love it

      1. I agree the update has some nice upgrades (like the bubble feature for texting. However, I have a Motorola bluetooth. I downloaded MOTOSPEAK and I was getting spoken texts through my ‘tooth. Not since the upgrade. I even tried changing the PICO engine to a different one from the Android market with no improvement. Even the volume of text-to-speech is very faint at maximum power. Sprint or Samsung needs to upgrade the upgrade. Someone did not QA very well before sending it public.

  12. totally sucks! I am getting rid of my Epic because of this update.

    1. I dont think you had one in the first place!

  13. to all with problems… ever heard of a wipe? factory reset? well.. do it and usually problems go away..

    1. I did the factory reset and if you are not paying attention, it AUTOMATICALLY downloads the update. There is no prompt asking if you want to download it or not. You have no choice.

    2. A wipe doesn’t work to bring back what the new version erased. And yes, I did a wipe…had to add back all my old stuff myself…and my contacts came back in triplicate. Yes, the ;} yellow and blue bubbles r ridiculously obscene. My biggest problem is with email. It doesn’t always send when I hit send…even after tapping SEND OUTGOING MAIL over and over. Sometimes it works and sometimes it sits in OUTGOING for HOURS. I need it for work, not play. I hate it…need another phone…and I just bought this 5 weeks ago…hate it!

  14. Got it this morning, installed no issues. Have not noticed any major issues, it did change my ring tones, but I can live with that.

    1. Thank you, I’m picking up an Epic Monday, good to hear it’s not likely to have problems. How do you like your Epic?

      1. I have had the Epic w/Sprint since Dec 2010. I absolutely love(d) it until this update! Things are different enough to hate the update and there is NO option to put things back the way they were.
The thing that bothers me the most is the text messaging. Mainly the blip-blip-blip sound every time I touch the virtual keypad. Plus, there is this annoying bubble that pops up when you touch the text itself. NO controls to eliminate this (or the other things that are new).
Now, if this was how my phone was when I got it, I wouldn’t know any different and that would be okay, prolly. But it wasn’t like this and it is extremely annoying.
It is a great phone, but new problems have risen.

        1. Is that using the default text messenger when it happens? Personally, I haven’t used the default one for ages, I prefer Handcent, so if it’s the default one, it won’t be a problem for me.

Does it make the blip sound when using the physical keyboard. If it does, that’ll probably drive me crazy. I don’t do a lot of texting though, so hopefully the rest of getting 2.2 is worth the problems.

      2. I like it a lot. I’m sorry for all the issues others are having, or had, but I have been lucky so far. Of course, I come from a computer science background, and provided technical support for a major computer manufacturer for several years. And since this phone is a mini-computer, with a Linux OS, it is really not hard for me to diagnose, and resolve issues. I am looking forward to programming in the Android platform, this was one of the biggest draws for me. I would say if you are fairly computer savvy, and enjoy a challenge now and then, you will take to this phone. If you want no problems or hassles, I would say go with the IPhone.

        1. Thanks for the information. I consider myself a super user so hopefully I won’t have any problems either. :)

  15. Got the update pushed through this morning… No major issues: I had to reset all my ringtones, which was a minor inconvenience. I am happy that the default setting to the calendar has reverted back to my google calendar- that was a big bone of contention with me when I got the phone. the only aggravation i have is the “handcent-y” text format… I’m not 15 years old and I don’t want little “speech bubbles” around my texts. So far I haven’t figured out a way to change or get rid of them… if anyone else has, please advise!

  16. I absolutely hate it. I want my old phone back. And yes, of course I have heard of a factory reset, but I do not want to lose all the stuff I chose to put on my phone. I just want this horrible update, which I did NOT choose, to be off my phone.

    1. you shouldn’t have gotten a new phone so idk what u are talking about and it gives you the option to install or not. so you did choose for the update to be on you’re phone

      1. Not true. It does NOT give you the option of installing. Go to PRIVACY and RESET FACTORY CONDITIONS. Then just sit back and wait. It will update on its own whether you want it to or not.

      2. whats with all these snobby replys, you all act like sprint, or android is your best friend, and they can never make a mistake, and who are you to tell someone they shouldn’t have gotten a new phone… man this article is full of people that are full of themselves… PS, i believe when Erin stated “I want my old phone back” that they were referring to their current epic phone before this update, try reading posts in their entirety, and put some effort in understanding them before you start trolling…

    2. A factory reset does not uninstall updates. A Sprint servicing center will have to return your phone to the manufacturer as this stupid glitchy update is a Samsung, not a sprint issue. At least that’s what they did for me. Band new phone, installed samsungs most recent 2.2 bug free update and all is well.

  17. Don’t do it. My phone took a dump, Sprint advanced support told me to do a wipe data but that didn’t work. Phone stuck on android system recovery screen. Have to get a new phone tomorrow. I’ve been with Sprint for 10+ years, but not any longer after my contract expires.

  18. I’ve been suffering with this update since I chose to install with the first go-around. I LOVED my phone before this firmware push and I HATE it now. It locks up and I’ve lost anything I had on the phone. I waited in a Sprint ‘repair’ store for an hour to only have them wipe my phone, again, and it still doesn’t work right. I will be getting rid of this phone and Sprint as soon as possible. DON’T UPDATE THE FIRMWARE!!!! It doesn’t work!!!

  19. This update sucks!!
Every loads up slowly.. sounds r messed up.. txt is crap!!
    Thanks sprint, u suck!

    1. This is a SAMSUNG issue. Sprint is merely the poor provider who carries the Epic. Common sense. Sprint has been waiting on Samsung to provide them with the update. Owning a Samsung phone doesn’t mean that Samsung as well as Sprint is given access to your information, thankfully. That’s why Sprint rolls out updates, they don’t just hand over your info. I will agree that I whined and cried like every other Epic owner for 2.2 and now wish I had 2.1 back. My Epic worked like a charm.

  20. I updated this morning and I’m regretting it now. The ringtones changing didn’t bother me but now when I want to make a phone call whenever I bring up the phone app, it’s automatically comes on if I had my screen turned sideways. Plus, it takes forever to load up the dial pad.

  21. I have been waiting for this update and I’m glad I got this one and not EB13. I have no problems at all. I had to reset my ringtones but that was no problem at all. Things are going to change after an update. No matter what kind of update comes through, people are going to bitch. Everyone bitched that they didn’t get EB13 so they rooted their phone and were so happy they didn’t get the “buggy” update from Sprint. Now they want EC05 that Sprint was sending out. What’s wrong with your rooted update? Not happy with it? When everyone dumps their rooted update and gets EC05, they are going to start complaining and say, “I should have never updated to EC05, my rooted EB13 was better. F*#ck Sprint”. Then after they get that, they are gonna start asking for Gingerbread or Honeycomb 10 minutes after their update is complete. People are never satisfied and so predictable.

  22. Received mine this morning no isues whasoever finaly installed fpse, love the you tube improvement an flash also finally installed fpse and lovin it, I’m just relieved to finally have froyo after waiting so long

  23. I got update about 24 hours ago. No real issues for me. But I’m not really a fan of the chat bubbles when texting. I can get used to it I guess.

  24. Anyone figure out if you can change your texting? Ew, it’s hideous! Blue and yellow bubbles? Gross.. I agree that the lock-ups before (especially with texting) were annoying and it seems better, and quite honestly should have been resolved a long time ago — but now my phone is an eye-sore!

  25. I got a new Epic from Best Buy free.It already had 2.2.1 installed. The move of my
contacts was a breeze and I kept all apps. The original ‘Epic had all kinds of trouble as I read in the forum I hadven’t heard anyone else getting new os pre installed. It solved all my problems from old Epic which I bought from BB also in October

  26. Total screw up by sprint. My epic is playing elevator music while on.

    1. Mine is doing the same thing. When I get a text or email itplays my ringtone and then plays this spa like song over and over until I clear the notification. Wtf?

      1. I thought I was losing my mind hearing that music and not being able to clear it. Gads!

        1. has anyone figured out how to get rid of the elevator music???

      2. Just reset your settings for your notification to what you had before. It will fix that as soon as you re-set all your notification ring tones

      3. Kmatt…I am getting the same thing, how do I get that damn boring music to stop playing when I get a txt!! it’s embaressing!

    2. lmao. thank you. something i can be grateful mine is NOT doing. sorry for ur pain though.

  27. Since this update, my phone no longer will ring, it’s on vibrate the speaker no longer works. I cannot get any music to play…any advice on how to get the sound to work again. What a bunch of idiots at Sprint. UGH

Any help would be appreciated before I throw this phone out on the highway.

  28. I got a message that I was getting my update last night. It started updating then got stuck on a recovery screen. I took it to the Sprint store this morning and they said they had to reset it to factory settings. Luckily my photos were saved on the card. So far it’s working great. Seems faster and battery lasts longer. If you don’t like the text messaging bubbles, download ChompSMS and you can customize. Will post again if I run into any probs.

  29. ever since i updated, my GPS doesn’t work (doesn’t connect) and my phone is always turning on the wi-fi by itself when i am home. i turn off the wi-fi and in 1-2 seconds it turns itself back on, but for some reason can’t connect to it so it’s in constant search mode (which i’m sure is going to drain my battery). it changed all my ringtones so i had to go back and reset them. i’ve hated sprint since i joined it a few months ago, but now i hate it even more and am dreading the next 1.5 years until my contract ends.

    1. Its not really sprint , its the phone.

  30. Verizon users need to stop bitching already! Its takes all of 5 minutes to root your phone and install froyo! Get over it and be happy with what you have!
Thank you Phandroid for finally getting a real format. You’re hangin with the big dogs now! Way to go!

  31. I havent got the update yet….I still have eb13….what does everyone think about sprint id?

  32. surprise surpise, sprint screwed up an update—-anyone get the .6 update for the Hero in June? Made that phone damn-near unusable and wasn’t really resolved by sprint until the fall. Root your phone asap pick a rom that works and move on—my Hero with gingerbread is amazing and AOSP on xda has been updating his rom every 3-4 days.

    1. yeah, the hero was pretty terrible after that update, and i just recently upgraded to a different phone and i feel like i have a smart phone again, haha… i enjoyed the hero for a while, then that update just made me stop using it for anything other than phone calls, texting, and the occasional note taking and calculating…

    2. I actually think it’s Samsung. Looking at the facts, and the issues across the other carriers, I think that’s WAY more likely

  33. My epic had the update yesterday. Hate it. My texts are coming through in big blue and yellow bubbles. Want the old style back. Also, apps keep starting. I use my task kill every ten minutes and its killing like 15 every time. I never had issues till this. Hate the update.

    1. You guys could just change your text message client you know. I recommend Handcent. Its free in the Android market and it should fix all your issues.

      1. Thank you MikeB for your recommendation on downloading Handcent! That fixed my texting problem. My Galaxy S 4G is rooted. All was fine until I deleted the “MyFiles” app from the folder /system/app. Androzip is new file manager I got from market that is superior to the one that comes with phone. However, once I deleted the MyFiles app, my phone would not send text messages, but could receive… Go figure… Thanks again.

    2. Woke up with an update for my Epic and thought it was gunna be a normal update until it finished and i realized i just destroyed how my phone was. I bought the epic because it was different and better than the iphone, now its almost similar. I liked the way my phone was, the new stupid bubble text boxes blow, apps are always running, battery life sucks now, my phone takes like 6hrs to charge.

      1. yea my battery life sucks now too. i wont even touch it for hours and ill look at it and the battery will be down to half :( the battery life was really good before this update. theres nothing really better. except you get more apps

        1. oh and theres no widget for the music player anymore. you have to download it.

    3. Download the app ‘Handcent’, you can customize all texts background, color, font, etc.

  34. Round 2 and it still blows. Text messages are stuck in some sort of loop. Haven’t been able to text in over 24 hours. All it does is constantly send. The auto-rotate of the phone is now backwards. The speed of the phone has decreased. GPS hasnt worked at all. Battery life seems to have decreased… Goin back to 2.1. Froyo blows…

    1. How do you go back to 2.1?!?? Where do I sign uP for THAT?!??

  35. So I found a solution and its pretty easy!
    1) root your phone
    2) choose custom rom
    3) enjoy faster, less buggy phone with better battery life.

Seriously guys, the hacks make better roms without all the intrusive bloatware. Who cares about Sprint and Sammy’s updates when there’s a dedicated aftermarket? You think Sprint is awful? Imagine buying a new Verizon phone and finding out they built in walls against customization? Users enjoy the freedom of android and sadly our phone companies are ruining the whole experience. Enjoy it while you can! I’be personally become addicted to trying new roms; you can backup your phone first and lose nothing whilst gaining everything!

  36. I was surprised by how much was changed in the update, however I can get used to them…The ONE problem I have is I keep my phone on vibrate ALWAYS and It doesn’t vibrate anymore when I get a text during a call…unless I look at my phone I have NO idea if I am getting a message! Anyone know how to fix this….I have tried by going into settings and it isnt an option.

  37. Tried downloading from a site last night to no avail. Haven’t gotten the OTA download as of yet.

  38. I hate it, too! My Internet bookmarks are gone. Ringtones seem to have a mind of their own. My calendar doesn’t work the same!

  39. Since the update songs play that I didn’t even download. Then the songs I did have were playing the wrong song when I clicked them. WTH. And I hate the yellow and blue bubble text.
Hope there’s an option to go back to the previous text box.

  40. I can’t get that weird elevator muzak stuff to stop. Can someone please write out specific directions for this? It’s hell.

    1. Just change the ring tones

      1. I changed the ring tones … the music does NOT stop

  41. ANOTHER “EPIC” FAIL…. I’LL. GO BACK TO HTC WHEN NEW EVO DEBUTS

  42. Saw some new apps, text changed…would like to have an option for that…i can no longer select parts of my text to copy/paste, it selects the entire mesage. Also I don’t have an option for virate ringer only silent…oh! And I don’t like the log…they shoulda left it as call log option….if I wanted to se who or when I texted, I would just go to my text option…I don’t need that showing up in my call log….its confusing!

    1. You can fix that by setting your log as only incoming/outgoing

      1. incoming/outgoing isn’t an option…only incoming, outgoing, missed, sent messages, received messages….i would like to be able to see all calls(0nly-not including text)

    2. but my battery life is much much much better!

  43. Wow from what I am reading a lot of y’all are having problems with the update… fortunately my phone is still working perfectly. Honestly I love the update. The only thing that happens with mine is at first the ringtones did change but I just simply changed them back and my only other issue is all the apps that start up by themselves. I just kill them and keep going. It doesn’t drain my battery like it has been for some of y’all. Sure there are some changes to get used to but all in all the update was very useful and luckily I am not having the issues most people on this thread are (: I have had my epic for about a month before it just updated yesterday. I still love this phone and honestly it has been the only phone I’ve had that I have not had a single disappointment yet (:

  44. Any one else notice their battery draining quicker?

    1. No I haven’t noticed but I did notice that it doesn’t take as long to charge which is really nice!

    2. I have…..I thought it was just my phone

    3. Completely cut my battery time in half. Everything is slow or just freezes up

  45. honestly im going to kill myself because it took away my auto correct if anyone knows how to fix this i will love you

    1. the closest to auto correct that i could find was here:
go to settings – locale and text – then choose samsung keyboard settings – XT9 Predictive text. It’s not exactly the same but the closest I could find. There’s other options you can select also.

    2. I used to use the Android keypad setting and lost my word correction/suggestion with this update. I had to change to the Samsung keypad setting.

    3. I noticed that as well. Not to mention that the voice search is frustrating

  46. So since getting 2.2.1 my typing is really slow especially on the internet (like now), when I go to the Sprint App and it says I have a Profile update or PRL and when I wantto update it says there’s anunknown error. So I went to the Sprint store and all they said was that 2.2.2 was coming in a week and that 2.2.1 has a ton of glitches (duh!) So I could 1. Go back to 2.1 and have all my pics/music/stuff wiped or pretty much wait for glitch “free” 2.2.2…… I guess I will play the waiting game. I don’t mind the text bubbles blue and gold (Go Bruins!). The fact that I can copy text easier and all that other stuff. We’ll see what this 2.2.2 will have to offer along with Sprint ID!!

  47. I have had the Epic since October last year and loved it. With the new update texts being sent to me dont always come through, including ones from someone sitting in the same room?!?! Changing my ringtones back wasnt a problem, but I do hate that there is no longer a vibrate only when on silent option. I also notice dome if my icons no longer work?! This includes factory installed ones.

    1. I have vibrate only, but no silent–not even when set to silent.

  48. This update caused my email to send out different messages then what I had typed, like ads for store. I found out after I had sent several emails to my boss and others. I reset all the factory settings and reloaded all of my email accounts and it seems to be working .

  49. This is strange everyone on here is complaining about not being able to put their phones on vibrate and I’m pissed that I can’t just put mines on Silent. I need it on silent for work and now all I have is the vibrate option..WtH ,, this update completely changed the phone. And why can’t we have the option to go back to the old style. And the text bubbles look so stupid..like a botleg version of the iphones. I thougt it was a matter of getting used to But..NO this shit sux.. It wasn’t broke so why the “fix”??

    1. You have to adjust the vibrate from the menu/sound options and change the vibration setting to “except when in silent mode”….This disables vibration and the only sounds you will here are alarms….Hope that helps :-)

  50. What the fuck is up with the comments why is it duplicating

  51. After update, plays a stupid song every time I get an email. So annoying.

  52. My internet doesn’t work, my texting doesn’t work (I can’t send or receive them and when I type them as soon as I hit enter, poof! they disappear), my phone shows the wrong time. It changed all my ring tones, it won’t let me reset them. I can’t use marketplace in apps, I can’t use any of my apps really. I hate this update so much! I don’t really have time to go to the sprint store and wait while they jack with my phone. Why on earth would they put out an update that has SO MANY glitches?

  53. Hey is there like any fracking way i can get the old update, my phone gets completely drained and god smite the texting.

  54. I received the Froyo update too and HATE IT! I dont like the cartoony look of messages. I had the mysterious music playing over and over when Id receive a text also. I couldnt customize the notification tone either. This update has made my phone less attractive. Its 3 months old and too new for me to be haiting it when I loved it before the update. I called Sprint Customer Service who transfered me to tech support only to LIE to me! They said I could undo the update by going to Samsung website and uninstalling and reinstalling. However, they failed to say that would void my warranty. I didnt feel confident enough to do this myself, so I asked if the store could do it for me and they said yes. I made an appointment at the store (that clearly said they did repairs and could handle 4g). When I showed up, they said they couldnt. I was irate! They did hard start my phone which wiped it clean of everything not factory installed, and it stopped the mysterious problem with the music and notification ringtone issue. Then they had me call Sprint again (from the store). This time, I spoke with someone who claimed to be in escalations. They offered me to move up my upgrade date so I could ‘buy’ a new epic at the $199 price with the old 2.1 software. I chose to go this route so I could have my old phone back. I’ll just have to decline the upgrade messages. Ive since sold the 3-month old Epic with the Froyo (within 24 hours) for the price I paid for the new phone. Im happy. :) However, Sprint will no longer be selling the 2.1 version within 2 months and all will come with the 2.2 factory installed. So, if something happens to my phone and I have to send it in for repairs, they’ll send me a refurb and chances are it’ll have 2.2 on it. In that regard, I do have to be careful (however I usually am). Best of luck to all of you with problems. I suggest you contact Sprint and let them know so that they can be aware of how unhappy their customers are with the upgrade.

  55. Sorry y’all are having trouble. My froyo is working flawlessly. As weird as it sounds I don’t even mind the goofy text bubbles. Flash is working. This is great…

  56. Wow what a bunch of Fkng noobs. Background music :D , ringtone settings. :S omfg task killer problems? People! The problem is you. Back up phone (search using magical thing called google) factory reset then update. Next……. Nevermind just shoot yourselves.

  57. Feel sorry for anyone that purchase a GALAXY 1 GENERATION PHONE on every carrier just glad I skipped and wait till March to upgrade every year now my phone have FROYO built in

  58. I got the update on the 24th, immediately my phone started freezing and not responding when I touch the screen. I took it to sprint and they did a hard reset wich was supposed to “forward a patch” to fix the issue. BULL! It did nothing, still doing same thing. Took it in fri they did the same thing saying it was an app reacting to the update. When it still did the same thing after a reset they finally decided to order me a new phone. Will be here tomo. I love this phone and enjoy sprint, but they have dropped the ball here. Good thing I believe in grace!

  59. Also,I have 3 working planes now, portrait, landscape, and landscape from the opposite side.

  60. Wow, seems that the only samsung galaxy s phone working up to specifications is the international galaxy s. Im on the sgs 4g and its fine but seems less than steller compared to other phones availble now.

I cant tell if samsung is just in denial that there is an issue? Or if they are truely trying to send out a good update but lack the ability. The other companys can do it in one shot, but samsung is consistanly having issues. Maybe its time to look at their developers and ask whats going on. If my company had this many issues with a product they would drop it or fire the person responsible for its development.

  61. I really don’t like it at all. I can’t find things that I used to. Theres an app called Sprint ID that I was trying to see what it was and now I can’t get my epic to go back to the way it was. I can’t find my buddies now app, nor can I find how to delete apps from my phone…….Its been frustrating.

  62. I got my update the other day and I love my phone! It’s so much faster, the battery doesn’t drain as fast and it has more features. I guess all the complainers here are technically challenged.

  63. Changing the weird ringtones wasn’t a huge deal, minor inconvenience really, in comparison to the huge lag the phone now experiences. The text bubbles are a little obnoxious because of the amount of space they take up on the screen (if you’re trying to read a few messages back in landscape mode its a slight pain, and you have to turn back to portrait), but the texting now goes SO SLOW. Typing is slower, keys seem to be missed more (and the type font is smaller), then when you try to back out and go to another person or back to the home screen, it takes forever! I feel like I’m on my 6 year old laptop that is slow as Christmas. Really? How can something like this be released? Did an intern create it?
I’m also not sure if this is fixed or not either, as I haven’t been talking on my phone very much in the past few days, but when I used to be talking to someone on it and a text would come through, the whole phone would vibrate and the ringtone was really loud in my ear. Did anyone else have that issue? And if so, is it fixed? That’d at least be one good thing. I’d always have to silence my ringer because the person on the other line could hear the “hum” of the vibrate.

  64. Solution Found! Background: I downloaded my updated Samsung Epic 4G Froyo update on Friday morning and have been living w/o data (internet, email) since Friday. The phone works. I’ve been pretty frustrated. Just a few minutes ago I was going to turn off the phone and take out the battery one more time before I take this phone into a Sprint Store tomorrow. When I pressed the on/off button, I noticed a new item in the menu (Data Network Mode) – what is this? where did this come from? It said my Data Network Mode was deactivated…once I touched that tab…and activated it…my data all came back. You got to try this…I’ve never seen this tab before…I’m thinking that many of us are having these problems with the update because the default setting is a deactivate data network – Let me know if this works for you and saves you from a complete data wipe!

  65. never seen whinier set of little bit***s. Half the stuff on here is fixable if you take the time to use your little baby fingers to re-set your original ringers, tones, etc….and yes you CAN set vibrate and the occasions when it will/won’t. I did it, you can to if you try.

Got the update and YES it did make some changes to ringers etc., but instead of bit***** and whining and threatening to throw the phone back at your parents that just bought it for you because they love their spoiled little brat, understand…a simple concept…nothing has a “fix everything now” button that promises an instant trip to nirvana.

JEEZ!!! ever do a software update that caused things to operate a little differently or not at all? Doesn’t happen with my MAC but that is the exception. My PC’s blew up all the time, but instead of havin’ a cat and breaking the legs of my GI Joe, I did a little research and tried to understand.

Power cycle, yank the battery, stop downloading every friggin app you’ll never need.

    1. wow, you need to chill… my mother works for a living, and was hoping this phone would make things a little easier in her busy life, and she was enjoying the phone, then this update made things a bit frustrating… do i agree with you, some kids are brats, yes, but that doesn’t mean that only spoiled children are having issues with this broken update, no. everyone’s snobby answer of, “oh did you try hard resetting it” is getting old, yes that is something that on occasion gets rid of issues (usually issues user related) but should we have to go threw that process everytime they release an update for this phone (not all coming from personal experience, as this is the only update her phone has had sense she got it less than a month ago, but researching the issue has shown me this is a common issue in updating this phone)

      1. haha, grammar fail on myself

  66. I have yet to receive the latest Froyo update )EC05) that most of you have gotten…I’m wondering if it is because I’m on EB13…I did not receive the last update before it was pulled so I downloaded and installed it from the Samsung website and have had zero problems since the EB13 update except for the annoying checkerboarding that occurs when zooming in and out on websites browsing….Did any of you guys on EB13 receive the EC05 update?

  67. I called sprint. They are replacing the phones for free because some phones are not working correctly with the update.

  68. II have had the update for two days now and have not had any of. The problems people have talked about it I had the eb13 update and had no trouble not with the.ec05 I don know everyone else Is having problems

  69. Alot of sad stories…sad to hear them, I liked this phone from the few secounds I played with it…

    1. Me too! I played with it at the sprint store for about a half-hour and I was hooked! I had to get one. My wife has an HTC Evo but I have to have a physical keyboard so I got the Epic. I’m coming from an HTC Touch Pro so the Epic is a definite upgrade to what I had.

  70. my mother just got this phone recently, and was actually enjoying the phone, it being her first smart phone, she had alot to learn, and updates like this are a real problem for that process. has anyone successfully “fixed” these issues by resetting to factory settings? id prefer an honest answer from someone who actually had issues, and reset the phone and got some kind of results, i cant stand people just throwing solutions out there when they are just the run of the mill trouble shooting steps, and not specific solutions…

a few of the issues she claimed to have, along with issues i saw first hand with the update were: that weird elevator music that seems to play randomly (not even along side a phone call or notification), phone goes into airplane mode when trying to place a call (only happened once) ring-tones are all jumbled (not that big of an issue)
there was a pop-up at one time claiming the SD-card had recovered (didnt get to see the specifics on that one)

  71. It deleted my alarm app which in turn caused me not to wake up this morning,, thanx Sprint

  72. Well it’s the 28th here and still no update. Not surprising. I own a Samsung 3D tv as well that has a 3D app on it that says, “Content coming soon!” Well that was 8 months ago! Anyways, this phone is going back today.

  73. Ok I recieved my OTA update a few minutes ago and everything seems to be fine. I have yet to have any of the issues some others have claim to have. My ringtones are fine, the messages look the same as they did when I was on EB13. SprintID is ok I have to admit I do like the ESPN pack being a sports fan but all in all I can always go back to my original setup with ease. The cool thing about Android is that it is fully customizable so if you don’t like something change it, way too many apps out there to complain about something you don’t like or a color you don’t like. Lets all calm down and take a step back and see it is not that bad. And for you trolls who come here to complain and don’t have a sprint phone, look at the title we are talking about sprint here so go back to your carrier and pay more then us and be quiet. Don’t reply about better coverage and all that crap. I’m a traveling contractor and I have yet to go anywhere and not have service. I give you that Sprint’s 4G needs work but why would I drop them to go somewhere else and pay more when I can use WIFI when I don’t have 4G. Also don’t bring up the extra $10 a month because we sprint customers still pay less then any other carrier out there.

  74. The only issue I had with My phone (I did the Manual Froyo update from the Samsung web site) is My camera would not set to sport mode – it would just force cancel my camera app. With the new update, my sport mode works!!! Thanks Sprint! Samsung! Google! Whoever! That being said i didn’t use the sport mode function on my camera anyway so either way it wouldn’t have mattered.

  75. Man I agree with the people who said they like or in favor of android. This is because it does ask if you want to update your phone. So how are you ging to be mad if you don’t like how its set up? Yes you have some things you have to sacrificise, but you get a whole bunch of stuff that comes with it. Also, many people that’s saying they hate the update, were the main ones begging Sprint to make the upgrade. Seriousy y’all need to make up your minds and stop bitchin all the time. It can’t make EVERYONE happy so just chill

  76. Got the update at 4:15. I was on EB13 and I am now on EC05. The low light video problem was fixed but there is still a slight checkerboard effect on some web pages. I actually think Sprint ID is kinda nice. Auto correct is gone on Froyo for some reason so I downloaded a keyboard app.

  77. I contacted sprint about this update. They seemed to be as frustrated as we are. Samsung is responsible for the updates, and by the sounds of it, they keep screwing the pooch. I can’t explain the poor responsiveness, or the need to update the text messaging application to look like a six year old toy, but I think the internet being slower is a result of Flash 10.1. One of the reasons apple won’t put flash on the iphone (besides arrogance) is because it’s just plain slow. Adobe needs to fix this and Samsung needs to roll out 2.2.2 ASAP. If they don’t deliver a new update in the next 10 days, it’ll be my last samsung device. Don’t blame sprint, people. When I contacted Samsung, they acknowledged the problem and said they’re working on it diligently, but wouldn’t give an estimate of when a new update would be available. Oh and yea, my battery life is much worse now, too.
One thing that helped w/ the slow responsiveness was some kind of “refresh” sprint customer service pushed out to me. It didn’t fix the problem completely, but the UI is a LOT more responsive than it was before. Best of luck.

  78. I have the ec05 version and it seriously sucks. My epic is extremely slow now and it’s made texting a pain. Swype no longer recognizes half what I put in and I know my texting hasn’t just suddenly gotten worse. As much as I like flash and the porn options it opens I’m ready to take eclair back now. Never thought I’d say that….

  79. Does anyone know if there I a way to change those ugly blue and yellow coversation bubbles?? Can we pick our own damn colors??? Wtf

  80. is there a way to download pics sent via text msgs? Pre-update the msg would simply promt me to download. Very user friendly. Now I have tried settings (nope) and holding the pic (gives me a choice to delete or forward, not save) and quick press lets me view the pic in the viewer. No choice to save

  83. I really don’t get what the big deal is! I downloaded the update last night and everything was fine. I don’t have an issue with my texts because I use GOSMS (way better than the default messaging system) and I just reloaded my launcher (ADW) and it saved my previous settings so my home screen(s) look just before. If anything this update was an improvement. I like the new music player (a lot nicer to look at and more user friendly) and the youtube application is 10 times better and easier to use. Also some new icons (like for the calculator or calandar) make the phone look better in my opinion. Most of the problems people are complaining about can be fixed by going into your settings or by dling some 3rd party android applications from the market (Go SMS or even handcent SMS are free!!). In any case, I didn’t have any issues with this update and if anything, I think it improved my Epic 4G.

  87. I got the EC05 Froyo update on Tuesday for my phone and have had nothing but issues on my phone. Text messaging freezes on me. Can’t move pictures to SD card. Can’t delete pictures from phone. Actually give ame a duplicate photo of the one i want to delete and/or just never deletes the photo! Try to look through my gallery at photos, also freezes. Or the screen splits in half. No issues with phone calls, so far. I’ve noticed its also running apps in the background that phone didn’t run to begin with with the original software when i bought this phone from sprint. My battery life doesn’t last longer than 3 hrs, even after moving apps to SD card (which you couldn’t do with original software) or deleting apps. Buddy list got deleted while the phone was installing this new Froyo update to the phone on Tuesday, too. But that was minimal for me.

  99. I got the update pushed to me on Sunday, and have had several recurring problems the most serious is I can no longer access my cooperate email. If this can not be fixed my relationship with sprint will have to change regardless of the cost.

A second and only annoying issue is my phone now de-pairs with my blue tooth at least once a day

Finally, I use an application called Overdirve to read ebooks and it state that the book is not loaded at least once a day and I have to re download the book.

If any one has a clue why company email which now states that the email is unable to open connection to server due to security error. My problem is not Samsung it is all of the variants of Android in our office (HTC, ect) and carriers who have recieved 2.2

    Any thoughts?

    1. John, I’m having the same issue with my company email (with Activesync). It doesn’t always sync and when I manually sync it, I tend to get the Connection Error message. I’ve also noticed that it seems to have a delayed response when trying to open the email.
My other email accounts seem to be working perfectly.

  104. Hate it. It has totally screwed up my phpne. Now bluetooth wont pare. It drops my calls to sprint cust svc after abt 45sec. It uses huge amount of battery life. Used to recharge fully in less than 3 hrs. Now its still not all charged after 6. I have to literally turn it off to get a faster charge.

Although the texting “cute”, I prefer practical.

used to be when I looked someone up while in ph mode it would search all txt in the first name. Now it only searches from tbe begining of the text. I.e. I have a contact with apple pie in the first name amd I search for pie, it wont find the contact.

Can I undo the update. I really dont want to be a beta tester for this. Rather wait for the bugs to be fixed.

  112. All of you who hate the update need to just get a regular phone that can make and take calls. This kind of phone is too fancy for you.

  118. I understand how you feel Thefrell7 BUT, you fail to understand how this affects some users. I got the update. My battery goes fm 100% at 7am – WITHOUT any apps running – to 31% by 2pm. Ive changed my notification ring tone but it still plays a song Ive never heard (and thats without the Sprint ID). Its VERY slow. aAnd a simple fix it yourself and stop whining doesnt work. Glad your phone is doing great. But thats not the norm. We have 4 Epics in our house. 1 update works fine. The other 3 have major problems. Also, as a consumer, this should have been fixed – the majority of the bugs at least – BEFORE it was pushed out to everyone. They knoew there were problems when they first tried to push it out . But to have this many users with the same problems – THAT ARENT FIXABLE – is unacceptable.

Also, as a consumer, this should have been fixed – the majority of the bugs at least – BEFORE it was pushed out to everyone. They knoew there were problems when they first tried to push it out . But to have this many users with the same problems – THAT ARENT FIXABLE – is unacceptable.

  120. I understand how you feel Thefrell7 BUT, you fail to understand how this affects some users. I got the update. My battery goes fm 100% at 7am – WITHOUT any apps running – to 31% by 2pm. 1. i agree. i have been very willing to fix the problems myself like my clock and all present alarms being swallowed into oblivion and the update that was available the morning of my update also disappearing off the market by the next day. i HATE the bubbles and my texts freeze up now which they never did before and sorry, but as much as i’m a do-it-myselfer, the standard text they’re pushing should not have this many problems when it did not before. as for bugs…AACH…i started having flashbacks at one point to my brief stint in hell, aka the 29 days i owned an intercept. my back button was not working. maddening.

  143. the latest update is garbage. my EPIC spazzzes out, takes 2-3 seconds longer to respond to any action.
and to put sent and received messages in the call log was an epic FAIL!!!!!!

  146. In case someone is interested:

I have a rooted Epic, and change I had made caused the update delivered tonight to abort.

If you don’t want the update to ever land on your phone, you can do something as easy as root, then rename one of the stock APK files.

    My update ended with this:

    “Verifying current system…
    assert failed: apply_+patch_Check(“/system/app/Asphalt5_DEMO_APP_Samsung_D700_Sprint_ML.apk), [etc.])

Apparently the update makes sure the system looks right before it commits itself. I happen to have removed bloatware like Asphalt5 by renaming them with from names like orig.apk to orig.apk_removed.

The reviews of the update are sketchy enough that I think I’ll … just stick where I am at 2.1 instead of renaming my bloatware APKs so allow the update to install.

  147. Ok there geniuses, if you consider yourselves to be grown up enough to own a “smart phone” and can post on this forum therefore have internet access, you should already realize that this is a SAMSUNG issue, SAMSUNG update that Sprint (the service provider) must roll out since thankfully they don’t just hand our phone numbers and contact info over to Samsung just because we purchased one of their over priced, over rated phones. I’m pissed off too, but at least be wise enough to direct your bitching and crying at the guilty party! From looking over half of these posts I doubt half of you should own anything other than a prepaid from Virgin mobile anyways. If you don’t understand why your Mariah Carey ringtone goes away after a FIRMWARE update….prepaid may be better suited for you….seriously.

  148. I hate the update. I am not a “techie” person but I admit I was in love with my phone before this stupid update. Before the update I was able to take screenshots using a program for rooted phones only (my phone isn’t rooted but the program worked). Now it doesn’t. There are games I play through my phone…they suck now. They are always timing out and telling me to check my internet connection. I go to the internet and no problems there but the games won’t load. Oh yeah, and I was LATE FOR WORK the day after the update because my alarm clock was deleted. Not reset, DELETED. Had to go download a new alarm clock from the market and guess what? It didn’t work! So on the third day I made it work on time.

Is there a way to undo this update?

  149. ota update failed so I flashed with odin. Aside from small graphics changes it takes an instant longer for my screen to turn on when I press the power button. Turned off elevator music by turning off notification volume. Bitching never solves anything, if you have the time to waste on that then go research how to root your phone, it will do your phone wonders.

  150. Updates or not both of our epics and top end blue-tooths seem to have a mind of there own. Problems ranging from dropped calls to two and a half hour downloads, increased data charges for a 4G service that sprint has no idea when it will actually be able to provide. The video chat is a basic function that in five months has not accomplished one phone to phone without a frustrated and early end. In eleven years with sprint I have never seen a service try so hard to produce so little, a seemingly endless disappointment that seems to get worse with each update.
