Samsung: No Need for 3D in Cell Phones Yet

32

Samsung’s head of product management in the United Kingdom said that the company doesn’t see the need for 3D on cell phones… yet. Rightfully calling themselves world leaders in 3D, they aren’t alone in opting to pass on 3D-enabled cell phones. To date, only LG and Sharp have made a decent push. Here’s the full quote:

“We are world leaders in 3D, but we haven’t seen a need for 3D on mobiles as yet … we just don’t see [3D] is needed yet—good luck to the innovators though, it will be interesting to see if it works, and if it does you’ll see a response from Samsung quickly”

I’m inclined to agree, honestly. After seeing the Sharp Galapagos phone last month at CES and after seeing the LG Optimus 3D in action today, I don’t get the fascination. It’s more novelty than substance, and it’s something I see myself disabling after a few days of playing around with it.

I’m biased, of course – anyone who knows me knows that I loathe this 3D uprising. But people seem to like it. A lot of people. And LG’s going to pull a ton of them in with their Optimus Pad tablet and Optimus 3D phone, so I can’t really be mad at them. Kudos. Samsung says they will strongly consider 3D if the industry catches on. [via TechRadar]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I agree, the screens aren’t large enough to make a great experience out of it.

  2. Yeah, there is no need to make high quality phones without bugs and no updates either. Samsung is proud to bring the next piece of crap stuck on eclair for the next five years.

    Rant over

  3. I agree. Push for more resolution/higher quality/durability and leave 3D off cellphones. It’s completely unecessary imo.

  4. Testing others to see if it’s successful?

  5. Hulk – Sounds like it and a good idea to me. And I say 3D is a big waste of time. I’m disappointed that the G-Slate has 3D because all its doing is increasing the price while the value stays the same.

  6. How 3D is the 3D on these phone displays anyway? I’ve never seen one personally :/

  7. I’ve been playing games in 3d on the pc for over 10 years, and I sometimes can’t stand playing games in 2d, primarily because of the graphics look better in 3d, things pop out and don’t blend in together. Some game developers use very good lighting and other effects to make it easier for the gamer to visually separate things from each other but those games also just look better in 3d.

3d is just an enhancement in graphics, it’s no different from a skin shader, hdr textures or having more polygons or fillrate, or in a movie the use of CG, those can be considered gimicks too.

  8. Well I have been excited about stereoscopic displays for a long time (before the current 3D boom), and personally I think phones are a grate gateway for getting this technology going.

For one thing, a small phone sized glasses free 3D screen will hopefully be fairly affordable (unlike a full sized monitor with this technology). And since these devices will have dual cameras, they also provide an easy way of recording 3D content.

Not sure I really see much point in a 3D tablet if it requires glasses though…

  9. When I play a game in 3d for an hour or so and try playing in 2d, it feels like I’m playing with one eye closed.

  10. I agree passing fad, no need for every phone to have it, 2 or 3 is more than enough.

  11. Lee, we are not talking about that. You are oblivious as to what technology is current. You must be one of my “happy” customers.

  12. Samung is right. Android needs more substance and less gimmicks

  13. Current 3d technology sucks and could destroy your eyes…period. There’s no need for it in ANY sort of display except for maybe a movie theatre where you won’t be overexposed. Holographic displays are maybe a decade around the corner, so why bother with stereoscopic garbage.

  14. no need for 3D on cell phones ever.

by the way until this stupid stereo 3D craze began, we were getting a chipset to do real 3D ( computer graphics 3D of games, web3d and movies) on our phones. But this complete stupid, fake push into bad stereo 3d has screwed everything up. corporations being no good for their own greed.

  16. Seriously, Samsung doesn’t have any reason to open their mouth about anything cellular related. They quit working on phones as they make new ones. They are only concerned with the almighty $ and not customer appreciation or they would have updated the current Galaxy S line to 2.2 prior to releasing any more phones. What a joke.

  17. Where I was saying 3d, I meant stereoscopic 3d. And yes stereoscopic 3d gaming on the pc has been around for over 10 years. In fact my first shutter glasses were from Asus with an Nvidia video card that had a driver hack and Turok was the first PC game I played in S3D.

  18. Is this a product marketing tactic – shooting down their competitor’s innovation because they are behind the development in their product roadmap? Have 3D technology is one thing, making it applicable to particular devices in another.

  19. yes samsuck no need to treat your customer and fan base they way other get treated ……. with timely updates and great support for their cell phones.

    ONCE AGAIN YOU FAIL SAMSUCK

  20. you are right lee

  21. Sammy is Jealos of LG. Because they did not bring any innovation in MWC. Just look at Glaxey S2, what is special in it. Just a thin body and super(Duper) Amoled Plus screen. Samsung’s story ends with its Amoled screens and nothing else. Weel done LG, keep it up.

  22. Small screen and even small movements of the device make 3D on phones impractical and even disturbing to use. I must admit the autostereo screens are getting better, but too small to do anything constructive or entertaining. Plug a pair of 3D capable video eyewear into the phone however (such as Vuzix sells in the Apple online store) and a ‘virtual’ big screen 3D is at your disposal. So 3D on small mobile phone screens – I don’t think so, but 3D watching and gaming while mobiles is a go with these new devices. The phone then becomes the game controller and TV remote unit!

  23. no need? what about taking pictures and recording videos in 3d? that’s a need. a lot of people are looking for 3d cameras just because that 3d feature is not available in their phone.

  24. Like it or not, nobody can stop the progress, you can only slow it down.
For me, high tech progress is never fast enough.
Whatever they create, it is always better and better.
I would like to see what future will be made off in 10,20 … years.
Like it or not, my next cell phone will be, LG Optimus 3D.
That is my dream for now, when my contract will end,
in 3 years it will be something else.
Life is fun, go for it.
