Android 2.4 On XPERIA Arc

15

Android 2.3 is Gingerbread, but apparently a version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc that Tweakers.net got ahold of yesterday was running Android 2.4 as documented by the below screenshot:

Interesting indeed. Tweakers found the 2.4 version on the Arc to be an incremental update to 2.3 with animations when deleting icons and other small changes such as hooks for Google Talk Video that didn’t seem fully implemented.

Hopefully these are elements we’ll see in the official launch of the XPERIA Arc and perhaps updates of other Android phones currently running 2.2 or 2.3 but there isn’t really any way of knowning. Until then we’ll keep our fingers crossed and keep snooping for details and evidence.

  1. So basically its 2.3 Gingerbread to 2.4 Gingerbread like 2.0 Eclair to 2.1 Eclair?

  2. thats what im guessing.

  3. Well, I have android version 6.6.6 on my device. Oh wait, I just hacked the build.prop………..

  4. Who cares. Whatever version of the OS the device gets released with, will be the last version it ever sees, and it’ll be late to the party anyway.

    Screw SE. Never again!

  5. SE makes quality phones but that last xperia set sucked. Hopefully this will hit the sweet spot

  6. That is not the 2.3 status bar and i don’t think 2.4 would be a reversion to 2.2

    I am calling fake.

  7. @er6ben: The status bar may have been modded for Timescape.

  8. @er6ben Tweakers.net is one of the biggest Dutch technology sites. This article are definitively not fake. I would trust a Tweakers.net feature over Phandroid’s(sorry, I’m a bit new here) and most other major site’ features.

  9. little to no Android updates = not going to get my money

  10. An area Google needs to clamp down on. Android version should be just that, if carriers and OEMs want to tweak it, they should still list what version they tweaked. Customers should know the baseline OS version they are paying for.

  11. There’s something really odd about this. If you notice the kernel version is 2.6.32, but Gingerbread 2.3 runs 2.6.35.

  12. My thoughts are that Android will have both phone and tablet flavors. Even numbers are for phones (as we’ve seen 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3) and odd numbers are for tablets (and now we have 3.0).

  13. I also think its fake, notice how the kernel is 2.6.32?

  14. About the fake part: definitely not fake. Tweakers.net is the biggest dutch community around and if they have personally seen it then it means its true.
What could be true is that its a SE fake. Maybe some sort of 2.2 tweaked version which they called 2.4 cause they thought 3.0 would be Gingerbread. Which is also stupid but SE is stupid so…..
