New HTC Desire Firmware Update Available (2.29.405.2)

A new update is available for the HTC Desire bringing its firmware version up to 2.29.405.2. The update is only confirmed to be going out to unlocked Desire handsets for now, no word on if and when carrier-locked versions will have their go. A changelog hasn’t been provided just yet, but the 28.87MB size and word from Desire users suggests this is a simple maintenance release.

Of course, some speculate it could be preparing the device for Gingerbread compatibility once that time comes, but there is nothing to suggest that just yet. You can check on the update as always through your ‘Settings/About Phone System software updates’ menu. Be warned you will need 25MB of free internal storage before the update will be granted to you.

  1. Wait I dont get it. This could be preparing the device for Gingerbread? The Desire hasn’t even gotten froyo yet. Or it did but then it was pulled.

  2. This is verey nice. :-)
I am still looking forward to the 2.3 update and to the hopefully better support for multiple exchange accounts.

  3. Yeah, well, failed to install on my Desire. Perhaps because of ClockwordMod Recovery…

  4. @Terepin: ditto, tried to update and it booted to recovery, de-rooting etc later

  5. Sure this is new? I have had this version on my
Desire since last week after de-rooting and flashing the latest RUU

  6. Got the update on my unlocked Desire in .nl , haven’t spotted any obvious changes so far, a changelog would be nice :)

  7. WOOT, used RUU and it worked!

  8. What, no news about the HTC HD7? Well, let me help you guys out:

  9. Yep, seems like the update doesn’t work on rooted phones (then again, why would you want to “upgrade” a rooted ROM to a stock ROM)…

My Desire has Froyo, as does most UK Desire owners. Is this a US thing? I got a 4Mb update the other day, but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

  11. HELP – upgraded and now can’t connect to a wifi. It says error… will not allow me to even set up a network. Any ideas???

  12. Hd recording/playback seems better

  13. If you get wifi errors after the update then reapply the update with your goldcard inserted.

  14. Upgraded OTA, unlocked Desire, Slovenia, no problems, requires cca 26mb free ram, no visible changes on first day, all usual functions ok (weather, bt, wifi, news, calendar, people, mails)

  15. Just chuffing typical. I get an update notification for 2.17.61.3 on Orange, thinking it might be a prep for Gingerbread (or Gingerbread itself – wishful thinking) I come on here to see if there’s any news while it’s updating and I find out that there’s 2.29 out for unlocked Desires -_-

  16. @jacob Froyo has be out on the Desire (in the UK at least) for unbranded handsets since the summer.

Bunch of updates have been release since.

  17. Whoever has ClockworkMod or a rooted desire, just mount your SD or plug it in a card reader, go to download folder and copy OTA_Bravo_2.29.24.02_1.10……zio to the root of your SD and rename it update.zip later boot into recovery,(the original recovery will be installed now and just apply update.zip, it will update your phone and will work :) thanks

  18. Just updated and have noticed a big increase in speed particularly switching screens, apps etc

    same problem here. UK update.
Cant connect to WiFi, seys error :(

  20. @scholesgoals
Don’t know if it’s a placebo effect but i’m noticing a speed increase as well in switching apps, the app drawer opening/closing, sliding along the home screens.

  21. HTC Desire has got 2.2 in the UK since the end of July for unlocked phones. I have installed it but mothing obvious, but it did seem to shut down faster when turning off.

  22. It sucks cause I don’t have the Desire AT&T too stupid to grab this phone.

  23. seems to be a slight speed increase, and the annoying microphone button on the keyboard has language on it aswell…(some of us run rooted stock roms btw, just for the ability to underclock/etc :P)

  24. I have the HTC Desire HD.. I goto about and update..Nothing is there about updating it..

How do I update it… Its not letting me. Says there is no update..

My mobile is fully unlocked to any network UK mobile..
I put an O2 sim card in.. It was purchased as a sim free mobile.. No contract.

Any help would be amazing thanks :(

  25. Bought unlocked, simfree, from eXpansys, Slovenia, not rooted. OTA showing no FW update available.
@Jani: how did you do it?

  26. @en Telet
Simple – go to Settings/About phone/System software updates (top of menu), check Sheduled check or press Check now button at the bottom – have battery full and 26mb free phone memory; with 2 reboots takes cca 10 min over wifi

  27. @Jani- I also have an unlocked HTC Desire currently running the 2.1 version. When I go to the settings as per your suggestion, it still says No updates available.

  28. @ThaboPatrick – not sure but I think you should first do an upgrade to Froyo 2.2, if it is available in your country; in Europe Froyo Android 2.2 was distributed OTA in the beginning of August 2010

  29. I found a fix, streaming now works when screen is off (with wifi).

  30. I did the update over the air/wifi last night. did not have my gold card inserterd and now wifi error. I have looked for some solutions and tried downloading the update to reinstall with my goldcard inserted, but my comp says the update “is not a valid win32 application” when I try to run it form the PC.
Someone else on another blog had mentioned about putting the update.zip file on the sd card and running it from a root menu, tried that but than the update would abort.
    Any helps suggestions?

  31. Hey guys I found this review of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZItWZOabhJY

  32. @Martin Ivanovski .. Thanx a lot.

@Jacob Desire indeed got Froyo update around end of August in India an Europe and end of september world wide.
May be You can do a backup and a factory reset before checking for update manually. I assume you have unbranded Desire.

  33. “Whoever has ClockworkMod or a rooted desire, just mount your SD or plug it in a card reader, go to download folder and copy OTA_Bravo_2.29.24.02_1.10……zio to the root of your SD and rename it update.zip later boot into recovery,(the original recovery will be installed now and just apply update.zip, it will update your phone and will work :) thanks”

DON’T DO THIS, Your phone gets stuck in a boot cycle and you loose access to recovery!! Then you’re in trouble.

  34. I got the update message earlier, but wasn’t connected to wi-fi, so thought I’d wait until I got home to do it. Now when I go find the update, it says my software is up to date, even though I know it’s not because the version is 2.10.405.2

Any ideas? Anyway to retrieve the update message?

  35. ohhh man!!! @Martin Ivanovski … I did what you said and now i’m stuck in the endless boot cycle that @Kieran S wrote about :( Now i’m stuffed… any suggestions? :)

  36. ahhh all is ok with the world again! ;-) I got into the ClockworkMod restore… so i told it to do a factory reset on the phone… that didn’t fix it. but then i told it to try and install the Update.zip again. It was looking to have the same fate, but then the HTC boot sound came! Never been so glad to hear that sound in my whole life. So i don’t what went wrong, any ideas?

  37. I had the same experience as Daniel Dewey. I’m on version 2.10.405.2, got the update message but chose to wait until I had a wi-fi connection. Now there is no system software updates available when i check.

  38. I have problems after update.

My phone does’t recognize charger or usb-cable immediately i put it in. It takes long time before it start charcing. Alternatively i need to reboot the phone with charger onto phone.

Other thing that phone does’t recognize SD-card at all.

And web bookmarks thumbnails disappeared they replazed by question mark and wireframe picture about SD or SIM card.

I think my battery goes low also faster than before.

Does anyone have same kind of problems?

    I’m from Finland.

  39. I have the same thing as Daniel Dewey and JoP: I waited, and now it says “No updates available”.
    I’m in the Netherlands.
    Anybody has a suggestion?

  40. Don’t mistaken this update for “Desire HD” update. Originally the release news on HTC site said it is for “Desire HD” – the site is updated now.

  41. This is the response that I got from HTC, which kinda sucks I think!!

“updates come from servers ota like a download message. they are automatically sent so if you miss your chance you will just have to wait again. it will eventually come through within the next 2 weeks. but i would advise searching for the update on your phone twice a day.”

Just because I don’t do the update immediately, surely my phone should still recognise there is an update available when I manually search for it?!

  42. Erik posted a message on swedish site http://www.swedroid.se/ny-uppdatering-till-desire-2-29-405-2/ saying he got a reply from HTC: “The update was temporarily taken down for maintenance, but will be back up soon”.

  43. Just received my second update notification for 2.29.405.2 (I postponed the first notification). I upgraded successfully.

  44. Got message that an update is available. I installed the updated. First time the update was downloaded on phone but I didn’t have enough space. After I made space enough it was installed in max. 5 min with no problem.
I have a Desire from Vodafone Romania.
