December 6th is the Ousting of Gingerbread [Double Confirmation?]

46

I swear, I’m not going crazy. I’m almost certain that this isn’t the first time that this Monday and Gingerbread have been used in the same sentence; but I can’t find the article.

Digressing. Notion Ink may have purposefully outed the official announcement of Gingerbread thanks to their CEO Rohan Shavran when he said:

6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work. (Eden is extremely compatible with 2.3)

I’m not alone when I say “about time!”

  1. So.. Nexus S is coming soon?

  2. hope so bro…i hope so

  3. ‘Ousting’ not really the right word to use

  4. Cant wait.. I hope it comes before the holidays

  5. “I swear, I’m not going crazy”, it seems you going crazy very soon :D

  6. note to Steve Jobs, run, run as fast as you can, you cannot catch the gingerbread droid!

  7. Shut james..where’s your android site haha

  8. Okay, hopefully Gingerbread IS announced on Monday, along with the Nexus S being up for Pre-Order ;D

  9. NG2. I was on my phone, so it was short. 2.3 can oust 2.2 but the release of 2.3 is not ousted. Ousted means to replace, not release.

  10. You mean Adam is extremely compatible with 2.3.

Not only Gingerbread and some cool devices, but some people are saying that the Chrome OS will be released too, though I’m not too interested in that.

  11. notionink.com already has new info on the Adam (at least since I last looked 2 weeks ago), worth a look.

  12. I can haz 2.3 en my Pro??

  13. Yay Gingerbread for my 22nd birthday :D

  14. Thats my birthday lol if only my vibrant got this

  15. I’m in love with Android, but I don’t know why, Nexus S didn’t surprise me that much … I was expecting something better I guess, just like when Nexus one came out … rather hold on to my Nexus One and wait till summer, hope there are better news by then … Go ANDY !!!

  16. Finally! And then the next day it will be a big day for Chrome OS!!!

  17. Soooo…..will we notice an increase in speed with this upgrade or just some bug fixes? Anything significant to look forward to?

  18. As much as it’s nice to get a leak, it’s kind of obvious that the 6th will be Gingerbread-related. Why? Well, Andy Rubin is the first guest on All Things Digital’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference, of course.
It starts on the 6th. Hopefully there’s a live stream available.

As someone else pointed out, the big day for Chrome OS will almost certainly be the 7th. Google have scheduled a Chrome event for that day and should launch the Chrome Web Store along with Chrome OS and hopefully announce when their partners will be releasing netbooks running it, too.

  19. @17 Point releases(as in 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) typically have new features in. There’d be no point even giving the release a name and statue outside of the Google building if it was just bug fixes(like 2.2.1)

Rumoured features have been reported on Phandroid previously, but I’ll list what I can remember.
Redesigned status bar and icons(possibly a full UI rework, but that might have to wait for Honeycomb, which is rumoured to be released in the first half of next year) integrated video chat which is compatible with Gmail and native VoIP in Google Voice.
That last change is the biggest to me as it would allow for free Wi-Fi calling to the US and Canada from your phone, which is pretty huge. A VoIP-based Google Voice would also make it easier for Google to officially launch Google Voice in other countries as well. Right now in the UK(for example) the higher than US call rates make the idea of using your minutes to make a call less than desirable.

  20. Apple better come up with something fast. Gingerbread has ui hardware acceleration which to me was the only advantage ios had over android. And the nexus s is going to be god in the cellphone world. I’m definitely buying day one.

  21. @Itrustme: I am really excited for gingerbead and I think android already has an edge, but this will lengthen our lead ;). I don’t think you can really say that the nexus S will be a “God” in the cell world because we have no idea what the specs are. I actually do plan on buying that phone too when it comes out, and it probably will be very good. No one besides andy rubin and eric shmidt really know if it will be on cell god level though :) we shall see!!!

  22. Keeping my fingers crossed hoping Monday the 6th is the D day for GB outing. But also Monday the 13th is a very strong possibility during Google media party..to me the perfect venue for a release and also to celebrate amongst friends, employees and media the wild success of Android. As a party gift.. a Nexus S for all in attendance. So I will be watching out for the 6th or 13th.. so it would be safe to say the release will come on a Monday

  23. Why is it that every android OS post has people speaking of a race against Apple? Who cares? I just want the damn OS already! Having come from iOS, which hasn’t changed as much in three years as Android changes in one point update, this is a no brainer to me… but why sit here and discuss how Apple has to bring their ‘A’ game?

  24. @Bela, exactly. Never understood the whole fanboi thing.

  25. Outing not ousting. Ousting is like a coup d etat or impeachment of a president.

  26. Omg, I hope the NI Adam rocks, I freakin hope it rocks. I want to buy a tablet, but I don’t want to get something half-assed.

  27. 2MOROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo

  28. I look forward to the Nexus S and Gingerbread. I was upset when the Nexus didn’t make it to Verizon. My hope is that the Nexus S wiil. I want to maintain the vanilla android flavor. I love my Droid OG and the best thing about it is the upgrades and lack of bloat-ware. No Bing, NFL Mobile, or anything like it. In general I hope the Honeycomb brings in a new era of stock devices, because these overlays and fragmentation should stop. I look forward to hearing about this tomorrow.

  29. I don’t think it will be the 6th. I’m thinking it’s going to be a lot closer to Christmas… I mean, c’mon… Gingerbread… Christmas…

  30. @Chris
The longer they wait to release Gingerbread/NexusS, the fewer holiday sales they will get. It’s bad business to release a product immediately before Christmas (meaning a few days before), if you want good holiday sales. There won’t be enough time to buy it and have it shipped to you by Christmas morning.

  31. Who’s to say the Nexus S won’t be released with Froyo? Just saying.

  32. Will my HTC Desire be Gingerbread compatible?

  33. I hope it’s Orion-equipped. It’s gotta be Orion-equipped.

  34. @Chris
Oh I see what you’re saying; the NexusS could be released earlier with Froyo (to get in on the holiday sales), and Gingerbread released later (and pushed to phones OTA).

Boy would that look bad for Samsung to release the NexusS with Froyo! But hey they’re used to bad publicity … they’ve made a mobile phone business out of it!

  35. @Itrustme I really hope you are right – for me if gingerbread was JUST hardware acceleration for the UI i would be satisfied, once android needs this then i will honestly be able to say ios has pretty much no advantage over android.

  36. Ousting? LOL. Someone needs a dictionary, unless they mean that Gingerbread is going to be forcibly removed from office….

  37. Got a g1 hungry for some gingerbread

  38. Chris, Gingerbread should have been out within a week of the mascot being placed on the Google lawn. The fact that it is not out suggest it’s going to launch with a phone. The Nexus S, or whatever it will be called, was also supposed to launch several weeks ago. Obviously, the two are inextricably linked.

Also, I’m convinced we won’t see either until just before Christmas, but I explained that on another thread, and don’t want to retype what I typed there.

  39. Lol didn’t the G1 have a hard time handling 2.2?? 2.3 is definitely gonna push it for that device.

  40. so where is this gingerbread and Nexus S? Its December 6th. Is Nexus S even releasing this year?? I hope so but Jesus christos my upgrade has been available for the past months I at least want a dual-core to keep up with the times.

  41. @2FR35H: Remember the time zones, it’s still night or very early morning at Google HQ.

  42. Forget the phone, i want that ferris wheel

  43. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Butt I cant weight four the necks version of Android.

  44. By ousting he meant that Gingerbread will be ousted from the top thing that all you rabid phanboys are obsessing about.
