Backflip owners, you’re finally right on the heels of the  promised upgrade to Android 2.1 for your devices. Just as they’ve done with devices before it, Motorola’s looking for testers to try out the upgrade before they send it out en masse. We’re not sure where a Backflip owner might have had to sign up for email updates, but the program is invite only to the first 1,000 people that sign up. Be sure to check your inbox to see if you’ve received the following message:

“Motorola and AT&T are happy to announce a trial release of the 2.1 (Éclair) software upgrade for Backflip, before it is officially released to all customers. We are recruiting 1,000 Backflip owners to test and provide feedback on the upgrade process and software experience.

If you’re a Backflip owner and you’re interested in testing the 2.1 software, please fill out this short registration form.

This registration period will be open until we receive our limit of qualified applicants. Note that you must be a member of the Motorola Owners’ Forums to register. If you want to take part, just join this community now and then fill in the 2.1 user trial registration form. Please note that registering will not guarantee you’ll be among those testing the 2.1 software. Testers will be chosen on a first-come; first-served basis, and on your registration responses.

Additionally, not every owner invited to take part will end up receiving the software, as the download period will be limited to a specific period of time.”

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Oh please God let my wife be one of them… then she can stop bitching and moaning.

  2. I ran into a lot of the same issues (mainly the slider malfunction). I backed up my contacts, performed the factory reset per AT&Ts instructions, and then logged back in to my MotoBlur account to pull everything back in. The slider malfunction is gone!! yes, some operations still run a little slow, but if the slider is the biggest issue, then this will fix it.

  9. @crap for brains

i almost did the same thing, that was what at&t was going to give me so i wouldn’t leave. cheaper than an early termination fee, but i’m glad i told at&t to shove it.

  10. Barely? Wow I’m more than half a year into this phone, and its barely gunna get it? Least ill experience it til april comes upgrade time and I will buy a phone that ships with up to date firmware and this time I’m doing my research on which android to get :)

  11. I had the back flip for a few months and hated it. The worst Motorola phone I’ve ever seen. I’ve always trusted Motorola and have used their phones and radios for years. I will never buy or recommend anything Motorola ever again. AT&T let me trade my back flip in on a Samsung Captivate. What a difference! The captivate actually works!!

  12. i also have always had motorola. but this backflip didnt have me wanting to do any leaps of joy.
moto backflip would have been a great phone if they would have invested in a better processor and more ram.
hopefully the 2.1 version of blur will not use as much ram so the phone can run faster in general.
also the front facing camera been perfect for a video chat app.
sadly to say thou when i looked at the stats on new motorola phones since… and they have less ram and/or processor speed on them execpt for the droid X and droid 2. and that is sad. i doubt i will get another phone from them if this is how they are going to continue to do business. its like the are half stepping just to get by in there phone department.

“After upgrade, available device memory will be reduced by approximately 40MB.”?
