Motorola Kobe Joins the Jordan in Onslaught of Phones Named After NBA Icons

19

A new device named the Motorola Kobe – model number MB520 – is beginning to make its rounds just after we heard about the battle-hardened Jordan a few days ago. According to Engadget – who was able to confirm the device’s existence with their trusted source – the Kobe will be a slate-style smartphone with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera, a TI OMAP processor, PowerVR SGX 530 GPU, 512MB of RAM, and 2GB of internal storage.

Not much else was said regarding the device (nor did we get an actual shot of it) but various benchmark runs show that – even with the underclocked CPU compared to other phones in Motorola’s lineup  – the GPU on this device should perform very well. We expect we’ll hear more about both the Kobe (expected to be headed for AT&T) and the Jordan very soon.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Whats with the 3mp camera I thought we were going to be done with anything under 5 like last year.

  2. YES! I hope this has Gingerbread. If it does, I’m getting it. A high end device named after my favorite basketball player! WIN!

  3. I heard they are making a Motorola LeBron

But it just quits near the end of a conversation.

  4. I don’t pay any attention to benchmarks in general, but after seeing that graphic I feel silly saying I’m perfectly happy with my Droid, but I am. Regardless, I’ll stick to buying my phones based on features and performance, not which celebrity name is on it. One exception… a celebrity name on a phone would all but guarantee that I would NEVER buy it.

  5. I am guessing you never owned a pair of Air Jordans?

  6. My droid smokes that benchmark with 1500+ consistently.

  7. The Kobe??? Hmmm, I wonder if it will rape you when you are not looking? What will it do while in your pocket? And you had better not handle it while on the porcelain throne, stepping out of the shower or while getting dressed.
Perhaps they will also release a Jackson (Michael) phone that left unattended around your kids……….never mind.

  8. These are internal codenames used by engineering to refer to designs etc, stop acting like tards thinking they will sell it by a name of kobe or whatever.

  9. @ Al none of that was funny.

  10. at least this should have 2.2 preinstalled.

dont get me wrong, but this is just like iPhone 3GS:

    3mpx camera
    no camera flash
    3.5″ screen
    AT&T

    XD

  11. DROID does anal rape

  12. I think a Motorola Lebron Should go to At&t. Since their Android Phones never live up to Kobe Standards…let alone Jordan

  13. LOL @deeb215, good one.

    Still laughing……

  14. Motorola Lebron on AT&T would make sense. It would consistently drop calls (quit) before they are over (season end)

  15. They are going to design the Motorla LeBron to switch carriers without warning via hour long ESPN special.

  16. Wow. Kobe Bryant should get over himself.. Some people in other parts of the world hear Kobe and think of the port city of Kobe in Japan on the island of Honshu, Japan’s 6th largest city. Or perhaps even delictable beef that is fed warmed sake & given daily massages.

Granted, Kobe Bryant probably has the world’s 6th largest ego and has to pay for his warmed sake & massages….

  17. Kobe?
So it should get all the hype of the EVO and DroidX combined, but have the performance of of an LG Ally.
But it should be on Verizon (the best network) to make it look better.

  18. I’m actually posting this from Kobe, Japan.
