Blow Up the Death Star With this AIR-Developed X-Wing GPS App

28

Score another one for Star Wars fans! What would go perfect with that R2-D2 Droid 2 coming this September? A GPS application made to act like an X-wing targeting system, of course. Developer Christopher Caleb took the power of Adobe AIR, coupled it with the all-inclusive and open Android, and created one of the greatest GPS experiences any technophile (and sci-fi fan) would fall in love with.

Input your coordinates (or address) and you’re on your way to destroying that Death Star as you reach your destination. I’m not sure how turning would work with this app – the “director” threw in too many camera cuts for us to judge – but who cares? It’s Star Wars! Grab a whiff of the video above for the full effect.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Awesome. Will it work if I just walk to the toilet?

  2. I don’t know about this one…..it’s all-out uselessness is pretty apparent. Thanks for telling me I’ve arrived at my destination…

  3. toby wouldn’t it be funny if the toilet exploded after you flushed?

  4. I don’t know about this one…

  5. But a true Jedi would turn the targetting computer off and trust the Force.

  6. WOW! That is full of lame. And to think, some people are going to wet themselves over this. Sheesh.

  7. Needs more chatter from Obi Wan and Wedge.

  8. Where or how can you download this? This is a must have for any Star Wars fan.

  9. The Geek is strong with this one.

  10. Hating fans doesn’t make you any cooler, what are Jobs’ fanboys doing here anyways?

  11. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”

  12. I’ve got a bad feeling about this…

(Actually I find it kind of amusing – no, it doesn’t do anything useful, but so what? Stick it in front of the kids and they can SEE “are we there yet?”)

  13. This app is being talked about on many websites, but not one lists where to find it, or even when it will be available.

    1. @Achilles because no one knows.

  14. Skunkpbguy: They may be even worse than iFanboys. They could be trekkies! ewwww

  15. ^^…flaming anyone doesn’t make you cool either…^^

  16. What a way to annoy someone during a road trip longer than 1 minute…I love Star Wars, but this is a complete waste of space…

  17. Forgive me if I’m being dense, but where can I get this? I didn’t see any links in this or the Engadget article. Is it just a proof-of-concept for the developer?

  18. Wait, at least Trekkies are fellow SciFi fans, iPhonies are just sheep.

  19. APK PLEEEASE!!

  20. iPhonies liked the Star Wars prequels because everything was so smooth and shiny.

  21. “Stay on target…”
    “Stay on target…”

  22. The only good thing about this article is the Star Wars quotes it is generating!

  23. This is gay just like all the other adobe air apps like their rip on facetime. the concept is not gay, it is gay that for all their talk about adobe air on android, their is no way to actually install these apps. If someone can show me where to install this xwing, flash time, or any other adobe air apps please let me know.

  24. Lost Terry lost Hutch……they came from behind :*(

  25. If you had the .apk you can get a prerelease version of “Air for Android” runtime from adobe. Then you can install it on any phone with Froyo.

  26. While I’m not enough of a fan or geek to want this, I don’t think it should be slammed. First, I like the fact that the open nature of Android means someone could fiddle around and come up with this app, and install it on his phone without having to jailbreak his phone or pay for the right to upload it onto iTunes. Second, the app, while still very limited, could potentially be improved on. Right now it appears the visuals only show a straight path and don’t reflect turns in the road, but who knows what comes next?

  27. COP: “You got in an accident because what?!”
Nerd: “I was trying to blow up the Death Star!”
